Chapter 72
Chapter 72
The cool morning air pressed against Emma’s face as she stepped outside, determined to put the previous night’s unsettling encounter to rest. Her heartbeat quickened as her gaze swept the edge of the tree line where she had seen the figure disappear. The memory of the shadowy silhouette haunted her, and though she had spent the night reassuring herself that it was nothing more than a trick of the light, her instincts told her otherwise.
This time, she was prepared. Her phone was tucked securely in her pocket, and her grip tightened around a small pepper spray canister. The yard stretched before her in quiet stillness, but her focus remained sharp as she walked slowly toward the boundary of her property.
A faint rustle to her left stopped her in her tracks. “I know you’re there,” she called out, her voice steady despite the nervous flutter in her chest. “Come out, or I’m calling the police.”
For a moment, the only response was the rustling of leaves in the breeze. Then, to her astonishment, a figure emerged from behind the trees, hands raised in a gesture of surrender. It was a man—tall, with a wiry frame and an unkempt beard. He wore a dark jacket and jeans, blending almost seamlessly into the shadows.
“I’m not here to hurt you,” the man said quickly, his voice gruff but not aggressive. “Just hear me out.”
Emma’s grip on the pepper spray tightened. “You’ve been watching my house. Start explaining, or I will call the police.”
The man hesitated, then sighed heavily. “My name’s Martin Hayes. I’m a private investigator.”
Emma’s brow furrowed. “A private investigator? Hired by who?”
He glanced around nervously, his demeanor shifting from defensive to wary. “Victor Harlow,” he admitted, his voice low. “He hired me to look into your personal life, dig up anything he could use against you.”
Emma’s breath hitched, anger rising to replace her fear. “What gives you the right to invade my privacy like that?”
“I don’t,” Martin said, lowering his hands. “But Harlow’s paying big money, and that’s hard to turn down. I didn’t sign up to stalk you, though. This… isn’t what I usually do.”
“Then why are you here?” Emma demanded.
“I came to warn you,” he said, surprising her. “Harlow’s not just trying to sabotage your foundation. He’s playing dirty. He’s digging for anything he can twist into a scandal. If I don’t find it, he’ll send someone else who will.”
Emma’s stomach churned at the revelation. She had known Victor Harlow was ruthless, but this was a new level of low. “Why warn me? What’s in it for you?”
Martin hesitated again, rubbing the back of his neck. “Because I don’t like where this is headed. Harlow’s got connections, and when he starts throwing his weight around, people get hurt. I didn’t sign up for that either.”
Emma studied him carefully, her mind racing. His story was plausible, but she couldn’t ignore the possibility that this was another one of Harlow’s manipulations. “If you’re telling the truth, why not just quit? Walk away?”
“Easier said than done,” Martin muttered. “Harlow doesn’t let loose ends walk away. Look, you don’t have to trust me, but if you care about your foundation, you’ll watch your back. He’s got something planned, and it’s big.”
“What kind of plan?” Emma asked sharply.
“I don’t know the details,” he admitted. “But whatever it is, it’s tied to that charity gala you’re hosting. He’s looking to make a public statement—something that’ll ruin your reputation and your foundation’s credibility in one fell swoop.”
The mention of the gala sent a chill through Emma. It was the culmination of months of hard work, her chance to secure critical funding and prove her foundation’s legitimacy. If Harlow succeeded in disrupting it, everything she had worked for could crumble.
“You have to leave,” she said firmly, stepping back toward the house. “And don’t come near me or my family again.”
Martin raised his hands again in a show of compliance. “Fair enough. Just… be careful. Harlow doesn’t play fair, and he’s got the resources to make things ugly.”
Emma didn’t respond. She watched as he retreated into the trees, her mind already spinning with questions and contingency plans.
Back inside, Emma paced the living room, her thoughts racing. She had no choice but to take Martin’s warning seriously. Harlow had already shown his willingness to go to extreme lengths, and the stakes were too high to ignore the threat.
Her first call was to Thomas. He answered after the second ring, his voice calm and steady as always. “Emma? Is everything okay?”
“No,” she admitted, her voice trembling slightly. “I need your help.”
She quickly recounted her encounter with Martin Hayes, sparing no detail. Thomas listened intently, his tone growing more serious with every word.
“This isn’t just about the foundation anymore,” he said when she finished. “If Harlow’s willing to resort to these tactics, you need to protect yourself and the twins. I’ll call a security company and have them install cameras and alarms at the house. You’ll also need someone on-site during the gala to handle any potential disruptions.”
Emma nodded, though he couldn’t see her. “Thank you, Thomas. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“You don’t have to,” he replied simply. “We’ll get through this. I promise.”
The following days were a whirlwind of preparations. Thomas worked tirelessly to arrange for additional security measures, and Emma threw herself into finalizing the details of the gala. She refused to let Harlow’s threats overshadow her mission.
By the time the security cameras were installed, Emma felt a small measure of relief. Knowing that her home was being monitored gave her a sense of control she hadn’t realized she needed. But her unease lingered, gnawing at the edges of her focus.
One evening, as she reviewed the gala’s seating chart, her phone buzzed with an incoming text. The number was unknown, but the message was clear.
“The gala isn’t safe. Cancel it, or face the consequences.”
Emma’s pulse quickened as she read the words, her hands trembling. She forwarded the message to Thomas immediately, her mind racing with possibilities. Was this Harlow’s doing? Or had someone else taken an interest in her downfall?
Thomas called within minutes. “I just saw the message,” he said, his voice tense. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” she said, though the truth was more complicated. “But we can’t cancel the gala. If we back down now, Harlow wins.”
“I agree,” Thomas said. “But we need to be smart about this. I’ll hire additional security for the event. And Emma… promise me you’ll stay close to the guards during the gala. Don’t take any risks.”
Emma’s throat tightened. She hated the idea of living in fear, but she couldn’t ignore the threat. “I promise.”
The day of the gala arrived with a mix of excitement and apprehension. The venue, a grand ballroom adorned with elegant floral arrangements and shimmering lights, was a testament to Emma’s vision and determination. Guests began to arrive in droves, their chatter filling the air with anticipation.
Emma stood near the entrance, greeting donors and thanking them for their support. Thomas lingered nearby, his watchful gaze scanning the room for anything out of place. Despite the cheerful atmosphere, Emma couldn’t shake the sense of unease that had settled in her chest.
As the evening progressed, Emma moved from group to group, sharing stories about the families the foundation had already helped and emphasizing the importance of their work. She was met with warm smiles and generous pledges, but the cryptic warning from earlier remained at the forefront of her mind.
It wasn’t until dessert was being served that Emma noticed something unusual. A man she didn’t recognize was lingering near the entrance, his eyes darting nervously around the room. He wasn’t dressed like the other guests, and his behavior set off alarm bells in her mind.
Emma signaled to one of the security guards, who approached the man and quietly escorted him outside. She watched from a distance, her heart pounding, as the guard returned a few minutes later.
“Just a gatecrasher,” the guard assured her. “Nothing to worry about.”
