Love by the Contract

Chapter 119

Chapter 119

Emma sat in her office, the weight of the morning’s revelations pressing heavily on her. The idea that BioGen Solutions would stoop to surveilling her family wasn’t just infuriating—it was terrifying. Her thoughts raced as she considered the implications, the image of her twins, Lucy and Liam, oblivious to the looming threats, tightening the knot in her stomach.

Thomas entered the room, carrying two coffees and a stack of papers. His brow furrowed as he placed the cups on her desk. “I spoke to the security team. They’re ready to increase surveillance at your house, Alex’s home, and the kids’ school. They’ll also assign a team to follow Alex and the twins discreetly.”

Emma nodded, grateful for his diligence. “Thank you, Thomas. I can’t believe it’s come to this, but we can’t afford to take any chances.”

“I’ve also arranged a meeting with the police to file an official report. If BioGen’s involved, we need a formal investigation on record,” Thomas added, his tone firm.

Emma exhaled, her mind moving to the next critical step: informing Alex. She dialed his number, bracing herself for the conversation. He picked up on the second ring.

“Emma?” Alex’s voice carried a mix of curiosity and concern.

“Hi, Alex. Are you at home?” she asked.

“Yes, I just got back from picking up the kids,” he replied. “Why? What’s going on?”

Emma hesitated, choosing her words carefully. “There’s something serious I need to discuss with you. It’s about the twins’ safety.”

Alex’s voice sharpened. “What do you mean? Are they okay?”

“They’re fine,” Emma reassured him. “But I’ve uncovered information that suggests BioGen may have been conducting surveillance near your home and the kids’ school. I’ve already contacted security professionals to ensure you’re all protected.”

There was a long pause on the line before Alex spoke again, his tone steady but tense. “I’m not taking this lightly, Emma. I’ll do whatever it takes to keep them safe.”

“I know,” Emma replied softly. “This isn’t just about my fight with BioGen. It’s about protecting our kids.”

“We’ll coordinate on everything,” Alex said, his voice resolute. “Let’s meet tonight to go over the details.”

By evening, Emma and Thomas joined Alex at his home, where they reviewed the security measures. Lucy and Liam played in the living room under the watchful eye of their nanny, their laughter a stark contrast to the grim conversation unfolding in the dining room.

“I’ve hired a team to patrol your neighborhood, monitor the school, and accompany you during your commutes,” Emma explained, laying out the plan. “It’s all discreet. The kids won’t even notice.”

Alex ran a hand through his hair, his expression a mixture of gratitude and determination. “Thank you, Emma. I know this isn’t easy for you, but I’m glad we’re on the same page.”

Thomas chimed in, his voice calm but firm. “We’re taking every precaution, Alex. And if we uncover more evidence tying BioGen to this, we’ll escalate it legally.”

“Good,” Alex replied, glancing toward the living room where the twins were giggling over a cartoon. “Because no one messes with my family.”

The three of them shared a moment of mutual understanding, their differences eclipsed by their shared commitment to the twins’ safety. As the night wore on, the plan solidified, and their co-parenting bond strengthened under the weight of the challenge.

The following morning, the tension carried over into the courthouse. The trial was entering its most critical phase, with Dr. Adrian Clark set to testify. His deposition would be the linchpin in their case, providing firsthand insight into BioGen’s unethical practices.

Emma arrived early, flanked by Thomas and Joan, her lead counsel. The courtroom was already bustling with reporters, lawyers, and onlookers. Adrian, though still frail, was determined to speak. He sat in a wheelchair, his face pale but resolute as he prepared to take the stand.

As the judge entered, the room quieted. Adrian was sworn in, and the questioning began. Joan handled the direct examination, carefully guiding Adrian through his testimony. He detailed the falsified safety records, the bribes to regulatory officials, and the calculated suppression of adverse data—all with a clarity that left no room for doubt.

Emma watched intently, her heart pounding as each damning detail unfolded. BioGen’s legal team scribbled notes furiously, their composed facade cracking under the weight of the whistleblower’s words.

Just as Adrian reached the crux of his testimony—explaining how senior executives orchestrated the falsifications—a commotion broke out in the back of the courtroom. A bailiff rushed to the judge’s bench, whispering urgently in his ear. The judge’s expression darkened, and he banged his gavel for order.

“Ladies and gentlemen, due to an emergency situation, I must adjourn these proceedings immediately,” the judge announced. “Everyone, please evacuate the courthouse in an orderly manner.”

A wave of confusion and tension swept through the room as people began to file out. Emma exchanged a worried glance with Thomas, who immediately pulled out his phone to check for updates. Joan approached, her face grim. “This isn’t a coincidence,” she muttered. “BioGen’s fingerprints are all over this.”

Outside the courthouse, the atmosphere was chaotic. Police vehicles and bomb squads surrounded the building, their lights flashing. Emma approached one of the officers, her voice steady despite the rising fear. “What’s going on?”

“We received an anonymous threat,” the officer replied. “The building’s being swept for explosives as a precaution.”

Emma’s stomach churned. It was a deliberate move, designed to disrupt the trial and unsettle her team. As the minutes dragged on, the uncertainty grew heavier. Thomas placed a hand on her shoulder. “This is a delay, not a defeat,” he said. “They’re playing dirty because they know we’re close.”
