Love by the Contract

Chapter 118

Chapter 118

The early morning sun filtered through the blinds in Emma’s office, casting long slants of light across the conference table piled with case files, evidence binders, and steaming cups of coffee. Emma was leaning over the table, reviewing their finalized presentation for court, while Thomas entered with a grim look on his face. The memory of the previous night’s encounter with the man offering a bribe still weighed heavily on him.

“They’re desperate, Emma,” Thomas began, setting his phone down next to her. “That bribe wasn’t just a cheap tactic—it’s a sign we’re hitting them where it hurts.”

Emma looked up, her determination evident. “Then we double down. We can’t let them intimidate us or think for one second that we’re for sale.” Her voice carried an edge of steel, though her eyes softened as they met Thomas’s. “Are you okay? That couldn’t have been easy.”

“I’m fine,” Thomas reassured her, taking a seat beside her. “But I won’t lie—it shook me. They’re clearly willing to cross every line to stop us. But that only makes me more certain we’re doing the right thing.”

Emma placed a hand on his arm, their shared resolve unspoken but palpable. “We’re going to see this through, Thomas. For Adrian, for the patients BioGen has endangered, and for everyone who’s counting on us.”

They spent the rest of the morning refining their strategy with Joan and the legal team. Every piece of evidence, every testimony, was scrutinized and prepared to withstand the counterarguments they knew BioGen’s high-powered legal team would throw at them.

As the hours passed, the tension gave way to a strange calm, born of confidence in their work and trust in each other. Emma noticed how seamlessly she and Thomas operated now, their partnership stronger than ever. The chaos of the lawsuit had tested them, but it had also cemented their relationship, turning mutual respect into something deeper and more profound.

That evening, as they wrapped up preparations for the following day’s court appearance, Thomas leaned back in his chair, rubbing his tired eyes. “I’ve been thinking,” he began, glancing at Emma. “About what’s next, after all this.”

Emma raised an eyebrow, a small smile playing on her lips. “You’re assuming we’ll win.”

“We will,” Thomas said with quiet conviction. “But when this is over, I don’t just want to move on to the next challenge like nothing happened. This fight—it’s personal. I want to do more. Expand the foundation’s reach, maybe even create a separate initiative focused on corporate accountability in healthcare.”

Emma nodded thoughtfully, her admiration for him deepening. “I love that idea. It’s exactly the kind of change we need. And I know we’ll make it happen, together.”

Thomas smiled, reaching across the table to take her hand. “Together.”

The next morning, Emma woke to an urgent message from Joan: a whistleblower-related document had been leaked to a journalist overnight, potentially jeopardizing their ability to control the narrative in court. Immediately, Emma and Thomas convened a crisis call with their PR team, crafting a response that would reaffirm their credibility while minimizing the damage.

By the time they arrived at the courthouse, the press was already swarming, cameras flashing as they stepped out of the car. Emma held her head high, exuding calm confidence despite the chaos surrounding them. Thomas stayed close at her side, their united front a visible statement of their resolve.

Inside, the courtroom was a pressure cooker of tension as both legal teams presented their opening arguments. BioGen’s lawyers, slick and well-rehearsed, leaned heavily on the leaked document, claiming it showed a pattern of reckless behavior and unsubstantiated accusations by Emma’s foundation.

But Emma’s team was prepared. Joan masterfully redirected the focus back to the core evidence: the whistleblower’s testimony, the falsified safety records, and the lives that had been harmed by BioGen’s negligence. As the day progressed, the foundation’s argument grew stronger, leaving BioGen’s team visibly unsettled.

During a short break, Emma and Thomas stepped outside to grab a moment of fresh air. “We’re gaining ground,” Thomas said, leaning against the railing. “They didn’t expect us to be this prepared.”

“They underestimated how much we care,” Emma replied, a fiery determination in her eyes. “And that’s their biggest mistake.”

Their moment of calm was interrupted by Joan, who approached with a grim expression. “Emma, we need to talk,” she said, her tone low and urgent.

“What is it?” Emma asked, her stomach tightening at the look on Joan’s face.

Joan handed Emma her phone, showing her a series of messages from their private investigator. “We’ve just confirmed something troubling. BioGen has been conducting surveillance—not just on you and Thomas, but on your family as well.”

Emma’s blood ran cold as she scrolled through the messages. There were reports of suspicious activity near Alex’s home and the twins’ school, including an unmarked car that had been seen lingering nearby multiple times.

“They’ve crossed a line,” Thomas said, his voice laced with anger. “This isn’t just about intimidation anymore. It’s personal.”

Emma’s mind raced as she processed the implications. She clenched her fists, her heart pounding with equal parts fury and fear. “They’re trying to unnerve me, but they’ve just made the worst mistake of their lives. If they think threatening my family is going to make me back down, they don’t know who they’re dealing with.”

Joan placed a hand on Emma’s shoulder. “We need to act quickly. Inform the authorities, increase security for Alex and the kids, and make sure the court is aware of this.”

Emma nodded, already pulling out her phone to call Alex. “This ends now. We’re going to expose every single thing they’ve done, and they’re going to pay for it.”

As she made the call, Thomas stood beside her, his jaw set with steely resolve. They were closer than ever to the truth, but the stakes had never been higher. BioGen had pushed them to the brink, but Emma and Thomas weren’t just fighting for justice anymore—they were fighting for the people they loved.
