A feeling of relief washed over Kate, as she looked at Lina, who was completely fine. She was even looking back at her, I mischievous smile on her lips.
Regardless, at this point, Kate felt much more relieved, despite the many questions that were in her mind.
At the moment, she did not have any answer to any of those questions. So, she decided, when there was a chance, she would ask Michael, to see if he would reveal something.
Still, there was another thought that had emerged in her mind. With this ability that she had gained, as long as she worked hard, she would definitely be able to get stronger.
Based on the description that she had received in her mind, it seemed that all that she needed to do was to train hard. And, there was a prospect of exceeding human limits.
This ability, while it did not directly grant her immense strength, it had just boosted her potential.
"Are you feeling alright? If you are feeling uncomfortable anywhere, you should let us know in advance, to avoid any unforeseen problems later on." The medical staff that was attending to her asked, concerned.
"I’m feeling okay, nothing’s wrong with me." Kate felt her body for a moment, before she responded.
"That’s good. Now that you have already completed this phase, all that remains is to see if you have awakened any ability or not.
You will be under monitoring for the rest of the day, so that we can deal with anything that comes up later on. You have to know, there is a potential of your body mutating, with maybe your fingers suddenly becoming longer or something of the sort.
Therefore, if you notice something unusual about your body, make sure to inform the medical staff as soon as possible." The medic gave a reminder, which Kate nodded.
But at this point, Kate was not the least bit worried about something like this. Since Michael was able to make preparations for something like this, she believed that nothing would go wrong.
The remaining recruits were facing the same situation as Kate. As of the moment, looking at their physical appearances, it was clear that nothing had changed about them.
But even so, everyone understood that many things have changed, especially mentally and psychologically.
That was especially considering the fact that they had just seen some people dying in front of their own eyes.
Of course, the bodies had already been carried away, to be dealt with. So, as Kate looked around, she realized that 3 chairs were currently empty.
This meant that out of the 9 recruits that had entered the infirmary for the serum injection, 3 of them had died.
This was quite a relief, as when considering the fact that the fatality rate was as high as 42%, 30% wasn’t that bad. It was just as they had been previously informed, the percentage did not represent everything.
There was a possibility of everyone that underwent the serum injection dying, and there was a possibility of all of them surviving. It was just all a matter of probability, with some factors playing great influence on the end result.
But as she was looking around, Kate suddenly noticed someone missing. It was none other than Evan.
That guy, since he was missing here, did that imply that he had actually died? If that was the case, then, Kate would feel that it was such a good riddance.
While the conflict between them had not reached the level where they would want to kill each other, but if he died, then so be it. Kate would not go out of her way to kill him, but if he was dying, she definitely would not save him.
She was an officer, and according to the ethics of her duties as a police officer, if someone was dying, and she had the ability of saving him, she definitely should.
In this situation, it was not Kate’s decision to have Evan die. Therefore, she could not take any blame. But even then, even if there was a possibility of her acting to save him, she would definitely not do so.
A police officer she might be, but she joined the police force not out of personal interest, but out of her personal vendetta.
She believed that by becoming a police officer, being promoted to the highest level possible in a short, she would be able to take revenge for her father’s death.
If not for the fact that she wanted to take revenge for her father, even she herself was not sure what she would have been doing at this point.
After all, the death of her father had happened quite early in her life, which changed everything completely. So, from a young age, she was already determined to become a police officer, as that was the only way for her to achieve what she wanted.
Regardless of what she was thinking about, Kate was not really sure that Evan was dead. So, unless it was confirmed that he was really dead, she just entertained the thought.
Just as she was still thinking about this possibility, suddenly, one of the recruits began screaming, as if he was enduring tremendous pain.
Every person in the room looked over, including the medical staff, who were quick to take action.
As Kate looked over, she was shocked to see what happened. The guy that was screaming, his face was twisting.
It was as if his entire face was made of rubber, and there was an invisible force being applied on it. Therefore, the face was continuously twisting into weird shapes, disfiguring him.
It was to the extent that sometimes, his eyes seemed ready to pop out of their sockets, only for them to suddenly sink in, to the extent that they nearly disappeared.
From this, it was clear that it was not just the skin that was affected, even the bones. The skull was one of the hardest bones in a human’s body, but even then, at the moment, it was continuously twisting.
"There has been a mutation! Take him to the ICU, we need to try as much as possible to save him." The lead medic shouted urgently.
Immediately, despite the guy who was screaming and waving his hands around, the medics around immediately grabbed him, before they laid him on a stretcher.
He was tightly secured by belts, to ensure that he would not fall off the stretcher, before he was taken out of the room.
At this point, the remaining recruits felt their hearts pounding. They finally understood what was implied by they could survive death, but that did not imply that they would surely be able to rise.
If that guy suddenly became a rubberman, what would be of his life? With all of his bones becoming rubber, would he even be able to walk around?
Just the thought of being unable to move around as normal as they were used to, it sent shivers down the spines of the recruits.
Even Kate felt quite lucky. She believed, since she had already awakened an ability, the probability of something like that happening to her was quite low.
"Okay, all of you, pay attention!" Suddenly, Peter’s voice reached everyone’s ears.
Kate and the rest of the recruits had not even noticed when Peter came in. Regardless, as soon as he spoke, they all looked over, wondering what he had to say.
"Now, before we identify what kind of abilities you have managed to awaken, I would like to let you know about a few things that you should know.
The organization that you are supposed to join is called NEXUS. In full, it is National Elite X-Unit for Undercover Security.
I believe that from the name, you can already identify the purpose of this organization. And since it is a national organization, it is clear that it is backed by the government of this nation.
Initially, during the establishment of this organization 32 years ago, it was just an ordinary organization. The members of this organization were selected based on their combat abilities and a few other points.
But with everything that happened over 10 years ago, things completely changed. There was the appearance of mutants, which is the name that we use to refer to those that have awakened an ability.
This was mainly due to the meteor that fell in our country over 10 years ago. With the scientists and researchers carrying out investigations and tests, it was eventually discovered that some of the material of the meteor could lead to the mutation of humans.
The mutation could be beneficial, but it could be detrimental as well. A person could gain special abilities, making them exceedingly strong, but at the same time, it could lead to someone’s life being completely ruined.
One thing that you should know is that, during the day that the meteor descended, it was not just within our nation, but it fell in other three places as well.
This implied that there were more mutants, and of course, as expected, not everyone that gained special abilities was responsible.
To avoid chaos from erupting all over the world, the leaders from different parts of the world held a meeting, in which they discussed the countermeasures.
Eventually, each nation decided to aid one another, while it was agreed that they would establish special units, which would be dealing with those rogue mutants.
That was how NEXUS was transformed from dealing with ordinary crooks, to suddenly dealing with mutants. And for the members of the organization to be able to do this, they obviously needed to be mutants.
And this is exactly why today, all of you underwent the serum injection, in order to be able to gain abilities. It will be based on your abilities that a decision will be made on which branch of NEXUS you will join."
