Chapter 321: Jesse’s Gift
Chapter 321: Jesse’s Gift
Usually, it was Johan who started talking to Quintus first.
Speaking of that...
Was Johan single?
Maybe he played around too much and missed his chance to marry.
As for Quintus, his wife passed away early, so he lived alone.
His son should also be in the knights.
In the grand hall, yet another dance song who knew which number it was now played in a beautiful and elegant melody.
The people around continued to dance and switching partners one after another without pause.
Among them, Shiao Yi began to notice there are same sex couples too.
At first, they looked a little nervous.
But little by little, they began dancing happily.
Noblemen with noblemen.
People in dresses together.
Even couples in knight uniforms.
There were still prejudices and resistance in society, but maybe someday people would be free to love as they wished.
This wedding between him and Dominic would surely become the beginning of that change, pushing those couples forward.
The trouble he and Dominic endured today probably had meaning.
While Shiao Yi nodded to himself, satisfied with that neatly wrapped-up thought, he suddenly heard a loud uneasy noise from the crowd.
What was happening?
As he turned his head to look... Splatch.
Something soft stuck right onto his face.
Something soft and sticky slapped right onto Shiao Yi’s face.
It felt like jelly, and he couldn’t breathe.
He recognized this feeling.
With force, he ripped it off.
Wasn’t it several sizes bigger than before?
He peeled the blue thing away with a loud peel and threw it as hard as he could.
"Waaah! Popo!!"
Someone caught it skillfully.
Dragging a black robe that ignored all sense of dress code, that person came running over while hugging the blue slime.
"That was so mean! I came all the way back from the deep mountains of Dalmasca!"
"Jesse, huh? It’s been a while," Dominic said.
Jesse with hair like a bundle of straw and freckles across his face looked exactly the same as he had four years ago.
"I opened fifteen mines and I made twenty tunnels for the magic stone materials so now my work in Dalmasca is finished and then I heard Captain Dominic was marrying Shiao Yi so I rushed all the way back here..Congratulations!"
"You worked hard," Dominic said.
"Ah, thank you."
"And for your wedding I brought you a present, listen okay."
After saying that, Jesse turned toward the large glass doors leading to the terrace.
Those doors should have been closed, yet now they were wide open.
From the garden, something huge was wriggling its way inside.
The screams began to erupted and the people nearby scattered in panic.
What entering the hall slowly were twelve giant earthworm like creatures and two giant slug like sea-hare monsters.
It was Jesse’s Whiskers Digger Unit beasts.
Had the number increased?
Jesse was a monster tamer and his Whiskers Digger Unit had been extremely helpful in digging the mines at Dalmasca.
They were good monsters, in a sense.
But why... why had he brought them into the wedding reception hall?
The giant worms lined up neatly in a row.
They were two meters long, thick, segmented creatures that stood upright with a slick motion.
Since they had no bones, standing must have been difficult.
Their heads wobbled up, down, left, and right... squishy, droopy, and unsettling.
On each side of them stood a purple sea-hare-like monster and a pink fat sea-slug-like monster.
Both were huge creatures about three meters tall and wide.
Because they were constantly swelling and stretching in every direction, it was impossible to judge their exact size.
All of them were massive heavy-looking monsters with round swollen bodies.
The number and shapes of the feeler-like protrusions on their heads seemed to be unique to each individual.
Because of the sudden crowd of monsters, everyone kept their distance, whispering anxiously.
The royal guards at the back were tense, swords ready in their hands.
The knights who knew Jesse were calm, though.
The monsters were apparently strong when they went wild, but they were usually gentle creatures.
When Jesse walked in front of them, all the monsters turned to look at the magician at once.
He took a stick from his cloak and lifted it upward at an angle.
The giant worm whose direction he pointed to made a sound: "Mi~"
One after another, the worms made sounds when he pointed at them with the stick.
Wait... Could worms even make sounds?
Mi, mi, mi.
Mi-mi, mii. Mi, mi, mi.
It was a musical scale.
The giant worms were lined up in order of pitch.
Jesse pointed at them like a conductor and a melody began to form.
It was like handbells... A giant worm handbells!?
Zuu.
At the rests and the ends of phrases, the sea-hare monster let out a deep "Zuu~"
The purple one and the pink one even had different pitch levels.
Mi, mi, zuu.
Mi, mi, mi-mi, mii, zuu.
It sounded... surprisingly nice.
"In quiet nights in the forest or the plains, sometimes I heard mysterious sounds. So those were the voices of giant worms," Dominic murmured with interest.
The melody was a simple celebratory tune sung in villages during happy events.
The orchestra softly added accompaniment and harmony, careful not to disturb the sound of the worms but instead to support them.
Inside the great hall, a strange and beautiful harmony flowed.
The music of monsters and human instruments mixed together.
The gazes of the guests watching the worms slowly changed from fear and disgust to affection and admiration.
Shiao Yi thought Jesse was amazing.
What Jesse did had more power than a thousand words from any mage or important person.
Monsters and magical beasts were completely different things.
Until now, people mixed them together, feared them and treated them all as enemies.
However, monsters were originally creatures born from nature and the earth.
Just like humans could have high magic, animals could also have high magic.
It was normal.
And animals with strong magic also had high intelligence, just like these giant worms and sea slug creatures.
