Chapter 324
Chapter 324
"Then we must find that portal as soon as we can," Thorne said, now halfway into a stiff, slightly-too-shiny leather armor. He looked ridiculously serious for someone in a freezing tundra.
"Hey! What about us?" Akali piped up, rubbing her arms. "We’re also freezing over here!"
Thorne’s eyes narrowed dangerously. "Figure it out yourselves."
"Fine by me," Seth muttered, clearly unconcerned.
"I can warm myself just by moving," Dagur said, stretching lazily.
Akali rolled her eyes and jabbed a finger at Thorne. "How did you even manage to craft an item like that? Oh wait... you can’t, since you only know how to steal."
Before another argument could erupt, Kairos stepped in, arms crossed. "Let’s split up to cover more ground and find the portal."
"Wait," I said, holding up my hands. "Keep this close."
I handed out small pendant-like devices, one for each of them.
Kairos glanced at it, raising a brow. "What’s this?"
"It’s... sort of a GPS device," I said, shrugging as if it was nothing.
Then I turned to the two who caused us the most headaches—Dagur and Akali. "And don’t you dare lose these," I warned, voice stern enough to make a lesser human quake.
Akali snorted. "Try me."
Dagur groaned. "Why do I always get the responsibility?"
"You don’t get responsibility," I snapped, glaring. "You just get blame if anything goes wrong. And with you two, something will go wrong."
"Wait... is this even an item from the system shop?" Thorne asked, squinting at the pendant.
When I didn’t answer, he looked up to see that I was already gone.
"Remillia the Explorer, gone before we could ask more questions," Thorne snorted.
Why would I stay and explain anything when I could simply disappear and let them suffer the mystery?
But to answer his question, of course it wasn’t.
I got it from my own system shop. Not the overpriced, suspiciously limited, probably-scamming-everyone shop here in Vision’s Gateway.
Honestly, their catalog was tragic.
The little device in my hand blinked faintly, showing everyone’s location but their devices can’t detect my location.
I was mid-stride across the icy terrain, arms wrapped around myself like a freezing burrito, when a translucent red screen appeared right in front of my face.
{He’s right. Where did you get that item from, Player UnluckyExtra?}
I didn’t even slow down. "I got it from ’None of your Business Shop’."
{So rude.}
A blue screen popped up because apparently, one wasn’t annoying enough.
[Get used to it. She really has a foul attitude.]
I stopped walking and slowly faced the screens. "...Are you two serious right now?"
{And you’re tolerating this? What a kind heart you have.}
[Hell no! I get my revenge by increasing prices in my shop whenever she gets spoiled!]
{HAHAHAHA! YOU’RE SUCH A GENIUS! Why didn’t I think of that?}
[HAHAHAHA!]
My eye twitched.
...
...
"Will you STOP talking in front of me?!" I snapped, swatting at the screens like an enraged cat. "I can’t even see anything in front of me!"
[You see how spoiled the person I always deal with?]
{I feel sorry for you.}
"STOP IT!" I snapped, nearly slipping on the ice. "I am freezing, I am lost, I am this close to becoming a decorative ice sculpture, and about to experience the man who lost his sanity in experiencing slow death being buried in ice!"
[Then just buy from the system shop.]
Poker-faced, I slowly turned my head toward the blue screen. "You literally just admitted you raise prices out of spite."
[It’s called emotional compensation.]
"That’s called a scam."
{Then buy from my shop, Player UnluckyExtra. I’ll give you a 10% discount.}
I narrowed my eyes. "That even more sounds like a scam."
Before the two could bully me further, I heard an explosion erupted suddenly beneath the crevice, just inches away from where I was standing.
BOOM!
BOOM!
BOOM!
In the middle of a frozen wasteland, bright, celebratory fireworks lighted up the freezing sky as a message flashed across the sky:
|Congratulations to the five players who found the fifth portal!|
I froze not from the cold but from pure, concentrated annoyance then slowly lowered my head. "...Ah really."
A long heavy sigh escaped from me.
"...Damn it."
I clenched my fists, glaring at the two floating screens.
"I was this close," I muttered darkly. "This. Close."
[Skill issue.]
{Distraction issue.}
I pointed at both of them, shaking with cold and pure, unfiltered annoyance. "This is your fault!"
[Our fault?]
{We were simply having a conversation.}
"A USELESS conversation!"
Another firework exploded in the sky.
Mocking me.
Personally.
I turned away dramatically, marching deeper into the tundra. "Unbelievable. I lost the portal because of two floating nuisances with commitment issues."
[You still want to buy something?]
"...What’s on sale?"
{That’s the spirit!}
I hated how I immediately folded but I also hated freezing to death, so really, this was just me making smart life choices.
A few seconds (and a painful deduction of my hard-earned points) later, I was wrapped in an upgraded insulated coat.
"...Okay," I muttered, tugging the collar up. "Definitely worth it."
{Of course it is. Premium pricing.}
"I’m still reporting you."
{Please don’t.}
[Hahahaha!]
I ignored them for my sanity I followed the direction of the explosion, boots crunching against ice, until I reached the edge of a crevice.
I slowed down my steps when I heard loud, familiar voices echoing down from below.
I peered over the edge and saw two men down there, yelling at each other like they had all the time in the world.
Christian and Rex.
I blinked.
It had been a while since I last saw them—and somehow, the first thing I witnessed upon reunion was them trying to verbally destroy each other.
Some things never change.
A small smile tugged at my lips before I crossed my arms and leaned slightly over the edge. "You two are still the same, huh?"
They froze mid-argument as they looked up.
I watched their expressions go through an entire emotional journey in three seconds flat.
Annoyance.
Confusion.
Shock.
And then pure, unfiltered excitement.
"WITCH!" Rex yelled.
"REMI!" Christian shouted.
I grinned at them.
"Wow," I muttered. "Still calling me that, huh?"
Before I could say anything else, they were already moving, jumping from rock to rock like overly energetic mountain goats on caffeine.
And then—
BAM!
They crashed into me in a hug, nearly knocking the air out of my lungs as we spun in a chaotic circle of reunion and questionable balance.
"YOU’RE HERE!" Christian shouted.
"OF COURSE SHE’S HERE, SHE’S LIKE DORA THE EXPLORER!" Rex added.
We spun in circles.
I don’t even know who started it.
"PUT ME DOWN—!" I protested, half-laughing despite myself.
They pretended not to hear me.
When they finally stopped, I blinked, slightly dizzy, and took a step back to look at them properly.
They’ve grown a lot.
Taller, broader, stronger, and yet somehow, still the same chaotic idiots I remembered.
"...You still act like kids," I said flatly.
Rex grinned. "And you still sound like an old lady."
Christian laughed. "We missed you."
I rolled my eyes. "...Yeah, yeah."
For a second, it felt like nothing had changed but then they opened their mouths and ruined everything.
"We’ve got a lot of catching up to do, don’t you think so, witch?" Rex said, grinning, but there was something sharp underneath it.
Christian, on the other hand, went completely serious. "Or should I call you the CEO of Nocturna Agency?"
Rex snapped his fingers. "Wait, no—Tigress. That’s what they call you now, right? The famous mercenary of Talon’s?"
"Or do you have another identity we don’t know about?" Christian added, eyes narrowing slightly.
...And just like that, the warmth from earlier evaporated.
I waved a hand dismissively. "Come on, guys. Does that really matter? I’m still the same old Remillia."
"..."
"..."
Wrong answer.
The way they looked at me—
Yeah.
They absolutely wanted to strangle me.
"What you did back then still hurts, you know?" Christian said, voice quieter now, but heavier.
"Imagine," Rex added, his grin fading, "you just say goodbye and then suddenly—gone. No explanation, no letters, not even a smack in the head."
Christian’s gaze didn’t waver. "Did you even consider us your friends back then? Or were we just... acquaintances?"
...There it is.
The reason I didn’t want to meet them.
Because this?
This was always going to happen.
I looked away for a second, exhaling softly. Back then, I couldn’t explain and even now, I still couldn’t.
I forced a smile. "Even the day I disappeared, I still consider all of you my friends. Hell, I’m still in contact with Whitney!"
"..."
"..."
Another wrong move... But bigger this time.
The air dropped another few degrees.
"So," Christian said slowly, "you’re closer to Whitney than us?"
"No, that’s not—"
"What a double-tongued witch," Rex muttered, looking away. "She calls us her friends, but treats Whitney like she’s the only one who matters."
I pinched the bridge of my nose. ’I was digging my own grave at this point.’
I already knew where this was going. They’d keep pushing, I’d keep dodging, and eventually, I’d crack.
"...Like I said, I can’t tell you everything," I muttered.
They didn’t respond and just stared at me, as if they already expected the same answer that came out of my mouth.
"...But yes," I sighed, finally giving in a little. "I became a mercenary. And a CEO."
Their eyes widened slightly.
"And please," I added quickly, looking between them, my voice dropping just a bit, "keep this a secret. Especially from Cypher and Angela."
I hesitated for a second before adding—
"...And Edge."
"What about Edge?" Rex asked immediately.
"Especially him," I said without missing a beat. "That guy talks too much when he’s around Angela."
