Chapter 59: The Magician
Transcendent Affairs Administration Bureau, Hai City Branch, Command Center.
Chen Mo stood before the massive holographic sand table, his face devoid of any emotion.
Betrayal was the act he despised most.
Yet the order from the highest authority, and the overwhelming temptation offered by the 【Pharmacist】 Wang Jingyi—a power so immense it could drive the entire nation mad—left him with no choice.
To obtain Wang Jingyi’s transcendent power, to secure an advantage in the coming era of transcendents, the authorities had to assist her, to help the 【Shadow】 faction win this game.
And that meant they would have to personally eliminate those 【Radiance】 players they were supposed to protect.
“Director Chen, Li Wei and Bai Yu have arrived,” a subordinate reported softly.
Chen Mo took a deep breath and turned around, the mask of firmness and composure once again upon his face.
“Let them in.”
……
When Li Wei and Bai Yu entered the command center, they immediately felt the heavy and unusual tension in the air.
“Director Chen.” Li Wei saluted, his voice steady.
“Sit.”
Chen Mo gestured toward the two seats before the sand table.
After they sat down, Chen Mo’s gaze swept over their faces, finally settling on Li Wei.
“Comrades Li Wei and Bai Yu,”
Chen Mo’s voice was low and hoarse. “I know that the recent string of events has left everyone’s spirits low.”
“We’ve lost too many comrades.”
“We’ve even… made mistakes that cannot be undone.”
He was referring to Shi Yuan’s death.
Li Wei’s fists clenched instinctively, a flash of pain flickering in his eyes.
“But now is not the time to drown in grief and guilt.”
Chen Mo’s tone suddenly turned razor-sharp. “Because we have a new mission.”
“The defector 【Frost Whisperer】 Chu Hanyue, according to our assessment, is a player from the infiltrated 【Shadow】 faction.”
“Chu Hanyue?” Li Wei’s brow furrowed tightly.
“That’s right, Chu Hanyue.”
Chen Mo’s tone was icy cold. “After killing our 【Radiance】 teammates, she escaped during the chaos at the base.”
“According to reliable intelligence, she has now joined an extremist organization called the ‘Ascension Alliance.’”
“This organization is composed of a group of ambitious individuals who seek to seize the ‘Divine Grace’ by any means necessary, posing an immense threat to national security.”
“And Chu Hanyue has sold all of our intelligence to them.”
Chen Mo placed a “processed” intelligence file before them.
In the file, the “Ascension Alliance” was described as a terrorist organization colluding with foreign forces, attempting to steal the nation’s transcendent research results.
Li Wei stared at the dossier, his eyes filled with cold killing intent.
“So, what’s our mission?” Li Wei asked in a deep voice.
“Eliminate Chu Hanyue.”
“From this moment, I order you two to lead a task force composed of our most elite special forces. At all costs, eliminate Chu Hanyue!”
“Yes, sir!” Li Wei replied without hesitation.
“Wait,”
Bai Yu, who had remained silent until now, suddenly spoke. “Just the two of us?”
“Of course not.”
A faintly meaningful smile appeared on Chen Mo’s face. “Allow me to introduce your new teammate.”
As his words fell, the doors of the command center slowly opened.
A woman in a white lab coat, wearing gold-rimmed glasses and exuding a quiet, scholarly air, entered under the escort of two guards.
It was none other than the 【Pharmacist】 Wang Jingyi.
“This is Comrade Wang Jingyi,”
Chen Mo introduced, “Like you, she’s a player from the 【Radiance】 faction, codename 【Healer】.”
“A few days ago, she contacted us of her own accord and offered to defect.”
“Comrade Wang Jingyi, these are your teammates—【Gun God】 Li Wei and 【Forest Whisperer】 Bai Yu.”
“Hello.”
Wang Jingyi adjusted her glasses with a gentle smile and extended her hand toward them.
Though Li Wei still harbored some suspicion, he shook her hand politely.
Bai Yu merely watched her quietly, nodded slightly, but did not extend his hand.
“Comrade Wang Jingyi’s ability is to produce healing potions,”
Chen Mo continued. “Her power isn’t suited for direct combat, so during this operation, she will remain at the base to provide logistical support.”
“For instance, preparing some… ‘transcendent potions’ that can temporarily enhance your physical capabilities.”
Upon hearing this, Wang Jingyi immediately opened the medical case she carried and took out two blue potions emitting a faint glow.
“These are ‘Vitality Potions’ I created with my own power,”
She handed the potions to them with a smile. “They can rapidly restore your stamina and mental energy for a short duration.”
“I hope… they can be of help to you.”
Li Wei looked at the potion in his hand, then at the seemingly harmless woman before him, and finally nodded.
“Thank you.”
“Then, the operation begins.”
Chen Mo looked at the two of them and issued the command. “I wish you both… a triumphant return.”
……
Meanwhile, several dozen nautical miles off the Hai City coastline, in international waters.
A massive, luxuriously decorated cruise ship, its lights glittering, was cutting through the waves toward the horizon.
At the very top level of the ship, within a presidential suite lavishly adorned in gold and splendor rivaling a royal palace—
Chu Hanyue stood by the immense floor-to-ceiling window, holding a glass of champagne, gazing down at the dark, fathomless sea below.
She had changed into a custom-tailored, ice-blue evening gown designed by a top designer, perfectly accentuating her graceful figure and her cold, elegant beauty.
Her fingertips brushed the icy glass, a faint chill coiling around them.
Behind her, several well-dressed, distinguished middle-aged men surrounded her with deferential yet fervent smiles.
They were the core members of the Ascension Alliance’s leadership.
“Miss Chu, are you satisfied with our arrangements?”
The man at the head of the group was none other than Zhao Yuan, one of the founders of the Ascension Alliance and Hai City’s wealthiest man.
“Not bad.”
Chu Hanyue took a sip of champagne, her tone calm. “At least it’s more comfortable than that cold iron cage in Bureau 869.”
“Haha, but of course.”
Zhao Yuan rubbed his hands together with a fawning grin. “The principle of our Ascension Alliance is to provide the most supreme and luxurious service for ‘God’s Chosen’ like you, Miss Chu.”
“As long as you can lead us to bathe in the ‘Divine Grace,’ everything the Alliance possesses—money, power, resources… will be yours.”
Chu Hanyue turned around, her ice-blue eyes sweeping across everyone present.
From their eyes, she could see unmasked greed and ambition.
She knew they revered her as a goddess only because they sought to exploit her power to grasp that elusive ‘Divine Grace.’
And was she not also using them in turn?
“Relying on me alone won’t win this game.”
Chu Hanyue set down her glass and said faintly, “You mentioned earlier that you’ve already contacted another player?”
