Chapter 148: I Want Out Of This
The sterile scent of antiseptic hung heavy in the air, a stark contrast to the chaos and fear of a few hours ago. Levi sat beside Lyse’s hospital bed, his gaze fixed on her pale face. He had rushed her to the hospital after the terrifying incident with Brandon, his heart pounding with fear and a fierce protectiveness.
The doctors had examined her, confirming that she had suffered no serious physical injuries, Levi had been able to breathe a sigh of relief. He had feared that something bad might have happened to her. He insisted on staying by her side, refusing to leave her alone even for a minute.
A doctor entered the room, his expression grave. He had been reviewing Lyse’s case, trying to understand the extent of her memory loss and the impact of the recent trauma.
"Mr. Van Doren," the doctor began, his voice professional but empathetic, "may I speak to you outside please?"
Levi stared at Lyse, reluctant to leave her alone in the room. The doctor, sensing Levi’s feeling spoke again.
"It will be only a few minutes Mr Van Doren, she will barely know that you are not there."
"I would rather not," Levi insisted. "I don’t want her to wake up and be frightened."
The doctor nodded and started to speak. "I understand that Mrs Van Doren has been experiencing some memory issues following her accident."
Levi nodded, his gaze fixed on Lyse. "Yes," he confirmed. "She has been struggling to remember large portions of her past."
"She does not even remember me..." he said wistfully, his voice soft as he stroked her soft hair.
"Well, I have reviewed her file," the doctor continued, "and I have discovered a crucial detail. Mrs. Van Doren was scheduled for regular follow-up appointments and specific medication to aid in her memory recovery. Due to the fact that she did not return to the hospital after being released, she did not receive the necessary treatment."
Levi’s heart sank. He had not been aware of this. He had assumed that her memory loss was a direct result of the accident, not something that could be potentially mitigated with medication. He worried that the situation might be too late to be salvageable.
"What does this mean for her?" he asked, his voice laced with concern and fear.
"It means that her memory recovery has been significantly delayed," the doctor explained. "However, now that she is back, we can administer the appropriate medication. It will likely involve an induced coma for a short period, to allow the medication to take full effect."
Levi’s heart pounded in his chest. The thought of Lyse being in a coma again filled him with dread. But he knew it was the best chance for her to regain her memories, to reclaim her life but what is she woke up and entirely lost all her memories?
"Do it," he said, his voice firm. "Do whatever it takes to bring her back to the way she was."
The doctor nodded and proceeded to prepare Lyse for the procedure. Levi sat by her side, holding her hand, his heart aching with worry. Even though she was still unconscious and could not hear, he whispered words of comfort, telling her that everything would be alright, even though he wasn’t sure if he believed it himself.
After the machine were plugged into Lyse, Levi’s thoughts turned to the events that had led them to this point. He thought of Brett, his betrayal in leaking information about Brandon being his son, his manipulative scheme. That had been the reason that Lyse had gotten in an accident, he would deal with him later.
He thought of Lottie and Brooke, their twisted machinations, their ruthless pursuit of their own desires. He vowed to protect Lyse, to shield her from their influence, to ensure that they would never hurt her again. He just needed her to be okay.
A few days later, Lyse awoke. The world around her seemed sharper, clearer, as if a veil had been lifted from her eyes. She looked around the room, her gaze settling on Levi, who sat beside her bed with his eyes closed, the exhaustion apparent on his face. She even noticed that he seemed to have grey hairs, like he had aged in a short time.
As she looked at him, a flood of memories rushed back, overwhelming her with their intensity. She remembered everything: their whirlwind romance, their weird marriage, th love that she had started to feel for him. But she also remembered the devastating secret she had uncovered just before her accident: Levi was Brandon’s father.
The memory hit her like a physical blow. The betrayal, the deception, the terrible omission of the truth – it all came crashing down upon her. She felt a surge of anger, a burning resentment towards Levi.
"Levi," she said, her voice cold and distant.
Levi’s eyes opened, they were first confused as if he did not know where he was, then his face lit up with relief. "Lyse," he said, his voice filled with emotion. "You’re awake."
He reached out to take her hand, but she pulled away, her eyes fixed on him, her expression hardening.
"Don’t touch me," she said, her voice sharp.
Levi tensed as hi brow furrowed. He could sense a change in her demeanor, a coldness that had not been there before.
"Lyse, what is wrong?" he asked, his voice laced with concern. "Are you okay?"
"I remember," she said, her voice flat. "I remember everything."
Levi’s heart first rose in exhilaration then it sank the next moment as understanding dawned on him. Her memories had returned, including the devastating secret that he had kept from her.
"Lyse, I can explain," he began, his voice pleading.
"Explain what?" she interrupted, her voice rising. "Explain why you lied to me for so long? Explain how you hid the truth about Brandon’s parentage knowing that I would never agree to this sham?"
Levi remained silent, his head bowed. He knew that there was no excuse for his actions. He had made a terrible mistake, and he had hurt the woman he loved deeply. He wanted to tell her that he just needed time and everything would be right between them.
"I understand why you are angry," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "I know I made a mistake but not trusting you, but I promise that it is not what it looks like."
"A mistake?" Lyse repeated, her voice laced with bitterness. "You betrayed me, Levi. You lied to me despite knowing how serious it was. I don’t know why I expected better from a man like you, you have no heart!"
Levi’s heart was crushed under the weight of her words. She was right to be as upset as she was with him, what he had done was unforgivable. Yet, he felt like he would die if she kept staring at him in disgust.
She paused, her eyes narrowing. "I want a separation, I want out of this!" she said, her voice firm. "And I am ready to do anything to make it happen"
Levi stared at her, his heart shattering into a thousand pieces. He had feared this, but he had hoped that things would be different, that she could forgive him. That she would just listen to him.
"Lyse, please," he pleaded, his voice choked with emotion. "Don’t do this. I love you."
Lyse was shocked at the unexpected declaration. She had never heard him speak like that and she never thought she could hear it. She looked at him and saw the vulnerability in his eyes and for a moment she almost believed him.
Then she reminded herself of who she was speaking to, this was Levi Van Doren, the only thing he cared about was his company. He was incapable of love. She hardened herself and stared straight in his eyes.
"I don’t know if I can ever trust you again," she said, her voice cold and distant. "What you did really hurt me, Levi. And I don’t know if I can ever forgive you."
She turned away from him, her gaze fixed on the window, her expression resolute. Levi knew that he had lost her, at least for now. He had made a terrible mistake, and he was now facing the consequences. He had to find a way to earn her forgiveness, to prove to her that he was worthy of her love.
But he knew it would be a long and difficult road, a road filled with pain, regret, and uncertainty. The return of Lyse’s memories had not brought the happy reunion he had hoped for, but instead had opened a deep chasm between them, a chasm that he now had to find a way to bridge, or risk losing her forever.
He did not want to let her go. He feared that giving into her demands would doom them, he might never get her again.
