Chapter 147: The Fight Levi Had Deprived Him
The Night Before
When Brett arrived at Sutton’s apartment, his usual air of smug confidence was displaced by impatience and irritation. He had expected Sutton to be compliant, cowed by his threat to reveal the truth about Brandon’s parentage. But up till now, she had not done as he had asked.
He found her in the same spot as before, perched on the velvet chaise lounge, a glass of champagne in hand. The opulent surroundings, which he had previously perceived as a symbol of his impending victory, now seemed to mock him, a reminder of the wealth and power that remained just out of his grasp.
"Sutton," he greeted her, his voice carefully neutral. He did not want to appear agitated, but the tension was palpable.
Sutton looked up, her expression cool and composed. She took a slow sip of her champagne, her eyes fixed on him. "Brett," she acknowledged, her voice smooth but laced with a subtle undercurrent of defiance.
"I trust you have not forgotten our agreement," Brett said, his voice firm. He needed to reassert his dominance, to remind her of the power he held over her.
Sutton placed her glass on the table, her gaze unwavering. "I remember quite perfectly," she said, her voice steady. "You wanted me to convince Brandon to sign over the shares to you."
"Precisely," Brett replied, a small smile playing on his lips. He thought that he had her cornered but her next words stunned him.
"And I’ have decided that I am not going to do it," Sutton stated, her voice clear and resolute.
Brett’s smile vanished. He stared at her, his mind reeling. He had not expected this. He had thought he had her trapped, bound by her fear of exposure.
"What are you talking about?" he asked, his voice laced with disbelief. "You can’t be serious."
"I have never been more serious, Brett." Sutton said, her voice firm. She stood up, her posture radiating an air of authority.
"I know know how desperate you are to become the big boss Brett. But I will not allow my son to relinquish the power that comes with those shares. He is a Van Doren, and he will inherit what is rightfully his."
Brett’s anger began to simmer beneath the surface. He could not believe her audacity. She was defying him, after everything that he could do to her.
"You know that I have the power to show the world exactly what you are," he said, his voice low and threatening. "I can tell Levi the truth about Brandon. I can destroy everything you that you have worked so hard for."
Sutton lifted her jaw and met his gaze, her expression unwavering. "Go ahead," she said, her voice calm and steady. "Tell him."
Brett stared at her, his mind reeling. He could not understand her lack of fear. Had she lost her mind?
"You don’t seem to understand," he said, his voice laced with frustration. "If I tell Levi the truth, Brandon will be ruined. He will be disowned. He will lose everything and so will you."
"No, he won’t," Sutton countered, her voice firm. "He will be hurt, yes. He will be angry. But he is my son. And I will stand by him, no matter what."
She paused, her eyes narrowing. "And as for the Van Doren fortune," she continued, "Levi may be furious at first, but ultimately, he’ll accept the truth. He’s a pragmatic man. He knows that Brandon is still a part of the family, regardless of his parentage. He won’t disinherit him."
Brett stared at her, his anger turning into a cold, hard realization. She was right. He had underestimated her. He had thought he could control her with his threat, but he had failed to consider her unwavering devotion to her son.
"But if you tell Levi the truth," Sutton continued, her voice laced with a newfound confidence, "it will ruin all of your plans to acquire the company. You will never again get a chance at another plot. Everyone will see you for what you are: a manipulative opportunist who tried to exploit your own family for financial gain."
Brett remained silent, his mind racing. He knew she was right. If the truth came out, his carefully constructed plan would crumble. He would lose everything he had been: the power, the wealth, the respect he so desperately craved. Also, there was a secret that might leak if all this unraveled.
"So, you see, Brett," Sutton concluded, her voice smooth as silk, "you have no hold over me. Your threat is meaningless. I will not allow Brandon to sign over those shares. He will remain in control of Van Doren Group of companies. And you will get nothing."
Brett stared at her, his face flushed with anger and frustration. He had been so close, so close to achieving his goals. But now, it was all slipping away. He had underestimated Sutton’s resilience, her unwavering love for herself.
He turned and walked towards the door, his steps heavy, his mind filled with a mixture of rage and despair. He had lost this battle, but the war was far from over. He would not give up. He would find another way, another strategy to achieve his ambitions and he would never forget this humiliation. He would make Sutton pay for defying him. He would make them all pay.
Current Day
Brandon stopped his car and flew out. His face face reddened as if it was about to explode as he stared at the huge gash on the side of his car and the broken pieces of glass on the floor.
His eyes raised to meet the calm eyes of the man who sat nonchalantly in the back seat of a town car. His anger overwhelmed him so much that it took a minute for him to scream.
"What the fuck did you do!!"
An already terrible day had gone even worse and as he flexed his fist, his eyes rested on the driver of the car. It seemed that he was finally getting the fight Levi had deprived him
