Chapter 323 : Washboard

Chen Yao sat idly on the sofa with his legs crossed, holding his laptop and watching a movie.

His cheek was still swollen, which left him without any appetite for lunch.

Having grown accustomed to living with Lin Nan, now living alone in the rental apartment should have felt more free and relaxed, yet he found it extremely boring. The movie couldn't capture his attention either. He glanced listlessly at the tidy room and realized there was no need to clean.

Sighing softly, he put the laptop back on the coffee table and lay somewhat awkwardly on the narrow sofa, staring blankly at the ceiling, feeling inexplicably anxious.

Why isn't Lin Nan back yet?

Did something happen to her outside?

Has she eaten lunch?

The more Chen Yao thought about it, the more irritated he became. He wanted to open a game to distract himself, but felt unusually agitated, making him not want to do anything at all.

After a long while, he finally got up from the sofa and walked into the bedroom, his gaze falling on several sets of clothes piled up on the washing station.

Both his and Lin Nan's clothes were on the laundry platform. Usually, they washed them every two days, and normally each person washed their own clothes. But today, he was bored out of his mind and decided to wash Lin Nan's clothes as well while he was at it.

He filled a bucket with water and stuffed both piles of clothes in to soak. Chen Yao's gaze was suddenly drawn to a bra floating on the water's surface.

He'd never noticed before. Lin Nan actually liked the cute pink and white type.

He always felt Lin Nan's clothes carried a certain fragrance. Washing them didn't feel repulsive at all; on the contrary, he felt even more enthusiastic about it.

While washing the clothes, Chen Yao heard the front door open.

"Chen Yao! What are you doing?" Along with the shout, a little head poked through the bedroom doorway. After Lin Nan looked around the room for a moment, she spotted Chen Yao washing clothes. "Why are you washing my clothes too?"

Chen Yao smiled wryly as he turned around. "I was bored with nothing to do, so I washed them while I was at it."

"What about underwear?"

"That's soaking too."

Lin Nan's brow furrowed. "Leave that for me to wash myself."

He turned back around to continue scrubbing the clothes, saying without lifting his head, "It's all the same effort anyway. From now on, I'll wash your clothes for you, and you can be in charge of cleaning the house."

"If you do this, I'm afraid I'll eventually be spoiled into a pampered little princess who can't do anything."

"That would be nice too. Being my little princess…"

Lin Nan's furrowed brow gradually smoothed. She walked into the room and asked again, "You're sure?"

"Why not?"

"Then I'll just laze around waiting to be fed. You'll do the house cleaning too."

"When I have time."

She came up behind Chen Yao and worriedly peeked at the washing basin. Seeing that Chen Yao's clothes-washing motions were fairly skilled, she finally breathed a sigh of relief. "Don't stretch out my clothes. Have you eaten?"

"Not yet. I have no appetite."

"Stop washing for now and look at what I brought you!"

Lin Nan tugged at Chen Yao's sleeve, pulling him toward the outside. Chen Yao could only temporarily put down his work and helplessly follow Lin Nan's steps, muttering, "What could it be? Flowers? Chocolate?"

Walking out of the bedroom, Lin Nan suddenly covered Chen Yao's eyes from behind, giggling. "Don't look! It's a surprise!"

Chen Yao's mind began conjuring images of Lin Nan presenting herself as a surprise gift to him.

He was led by the hand to the coffee table. Lin Nan hurriedly tore open the game console's outer packaging and placed the Zelda game cartridge on top.

"Okay, you can open your eyes now!"

Chen Yao obediently followed Lin Nan's instructions and opened his eyes, only to see a game console on the table.

He paused, then turned to ask Lin Nan, "Where'd you get the money to buy this?"

"My Little Uncle bought it!"

"Then that's not very sincere."

Lin Nan handed him the game console, her brow slightly furrowed. "Why do you seem not that happy? Don't they say guys like game consoles?"

Taking the game console, Chen Yao felt a bit disappointed. It wasn't the surprise he'd imagined, and it was even something Lin Nan had conned someone out of?

"I paid for it!" Seeing that Chen Yao's emotions weren't as excited as Lin Nan had anticipated, Lin Nan raised her chin and huffed. "I don't understand game consoles and was afraid of being scammed, so I tricked Little Uncle into buying it. After he bought it, I secretly transferred him money! So it counts as me buying it myself!"

"I still had over a thousand left from last semester's part-time work. Later, your mom also gave me quite a bit, my mom also gave me lots of spending money and New Year's money. Plus living expenses, after buying the game console, I still have over a thousand left."

"Mm." Chen Yao's face still showed no smile. He just fiddled with the game console for a moment, then put it back in the packaging box. "Let's just return it. Don't waste money."

Fortunately, Wu Guodong happened to call Lin Nan out to play, so she tricked Little Uncle into helping with the purchase. At least he had three game consoles at home. Having bought many, he definitely knew more than Lin Nan.

Lin Nan huffily turned and walked toward the bedroom. Chen Yao was stunned for a moment, then quickly forced a smile and chased after her. "We won't return it, we won't return it! How about we play the game console together tonight?"

"Not playing!"

"No, I didn't say I don't like it. I just think it's too expensive."

"I can't be bothered with you!"

Chen Yao quickly quickened his pace and blocked the bedroom doorway, grinning sheepishly at Lin Nan's puffed-up cheeks.

She raised her head, glaring at Chen Yao's face with embarrassment and anger. "Move! Go return your game console right now!"

"I already said I'm not returning it." Chen Yao sighed helplessly. "You know I speak pretty bluntly..."

"This is called blunt? This is called having no EQ." Lin Nan kicked Chen Yao's shin. "Normally you're not this stupid! If you'd given Xiong Da Monster Hunter back then and he said he didn't like it and told you to return it, what would you think?"

Chen Yao imagined the scenario and said with certainty, "He wouldn't dislike it, and I didn't say I don't like the game console either, right? It's mainly that you don't have much money to spend. There's no need to buy such expensive things. Even if you just brought me takeout, I'd be happy."
