Chapter 277 : Since You're Already Here
Chapter 277 : Since You're Already Here
Spring arrived at the drop of a hat.
The sky had been clear just moments ago, but in less than half an hour, dark clouds had completely blocked out the sunlight.
Thick dark clouds drifted in from who knows where, sweeping away the warmth of the noon sun. In no time at all, scattered light rain began to fall.
The boy and girl on the suburban road frantically took shelter under a roadside tree, looking with some worry at the sky that had already begun flashing with lightning and rumbling with thunder.
The roadside trees had probably only been planted a few years ago. Their sparse leaves couldn't even block the drizzle, and in just moments the two of them were wet with rain.
The gentle breeze and warm sun from before had become cold wind and light rain, making the girl instinctively hide behind the boy.
This guy had thick skin. A little wind couldn't budge him at all. He'd be fine.
"Did you bring an umbrella? Or a raincoat?"
Lin Nan asked with a worried expression, hiding behind Chen Yao.
Chen Yao looked at the sky, shaking his head as he said, "The sun was so bright at noon, why would I bring a raincoat? This motorbike isn't used often either, so I didn't have one prepared."
The rain caused the temperature of nearly twenty degrees to start dropping almost instantly. Combined with the drizzle hitting his neck through his collar, Chen Yao felt cold all over.
"Today really wasn't a good day to go out. This rain is probably going to get heavy soon. We should hurry back.”He cursed casually, shivered, and turned to look at Lin Nan curled up behind him to avoid the wind. He couldn't help but ask curiously, "Aren't you cold? You're only wearing two layers, right?"
Lin Nan froze for a moment, then immediately put on an expression of grimacing and shivering from the cold: "Freezing to death."
"Here." Chen Yao casually took off his leather jacket and draped it over her shoulders, revealing the thin long-sleeved shirt underneath. Then he got on the motorbike and patted the seat behind him with hands trembling from the cold. "Quick, get on, put on the helmet, let's hurry back."
"You don't even have a raincoat..." Lin Nan took the helmet and was about to put it on when she found that her other hand already held a raincoat.
She looked blankly at the shadow beside her that was gradually fading away.
"I brought one." Lin Nan didn't make a big deal of it and handed the raincoat to Chen Yao.
Now it was Chen Yao's turn to be confused. Lin Nan had only brought herself when she left. Was she doing magic tricks now?
But the sky had already started flashing with lightning and rumbling with thunder, so he didn't have time to think too much. He hurriedly put the raincoat on himself: "Get in here, don't catch a cold from the rain."
"I know, I know."
Hastily putting on the helmet and straddling the back seat of the motorbike, Lin Nan immediately lifted the raincoat and crawled in from behind.
This was a standard motorcycle raincoat, quite thick, but as soon as she entered the raincoat, Lin Nan noticed that Chen Yao's body was constantly trembling slightly.
Unlike her with her temperature-regulating magic, Chen Yao was now wearing only a thin long-sleeved shirt in this rainy weather. Being cold was normal.
"Are you comfy?"
She hesitantly reached out and hugged Chen Yao, pressing her helmet against Chen Yao's back shoulder, their two bodies pressed tightly together.
Chen Yao's trembling lessened considerably. He only felt waves of warmth transmitting from his back to his body. "Not shy anymore?" He started the motorbike and teased.
"It's not like I've never hugged you before..." Lin Nan mumbled in a low voice, then questioned, "And why was the start so smooth this time? Don't tell me you did it on purpose before?"
Having his little scheme seen through, Chen Yao felt quite embarrassed and didn't dare continue teasing. He lowered his head and carried Lin Nan through the rain.
The rain really did get heavier and heavier. What started as a drizzle became a torrential downpour, and the sound of it hitting the raincoat even drowned out the sound of the motorbike running.
Lin Nan tightly hugged Chen Yao's waist, feeling his body getting warmer and warmer, and couldn't help feeling a bit smug.
Although her hands and feet were always ice cold for various reasons, her body under the effect of magic was like a good air conditioner, warm in winter and cool in summer.
"Hey, since you're already hugging me, when are you going to be more proactive?"
Chen Yao's voice sounded somewhat faint under the cover of the falling rain.
But Lin Nan still clearly caught his words and sneered, "If I weren't on your motorbike, why would I hug you?"
"Are you saying we'll kiss, hug, and lift high later?"
"I said! If it weren't for your motorbike being unstable and me being afraid of dying, why would I hug you!"
"No rush. We'll find a place without rain or people later. It wouldn't be good to be seen by others."
She was about to raise her volume to continue explaining when she suddenly realized Chen Yao was deliberately teasing her.
Lin Nan was so angry, but being on the motorbike she didn't dare pinch the soft flesh at Chen Yao's waist, afraid this guy would shiver and they'd crash and die. She could only choose to ignore him.
But it was only a few minutes before Lin Nan couldn't hold back her words again: "Next semester, why don't you rent a place with me off-campus?"
"Why?"
"I finally got off-campus housing permission. Living on campus always feels like a waste." And Lin Nan also didn't know how to get along with girls. Living in a girls' dormitory was even more embarrassingly awkward. Even though she knew she was no longer any different from those normal girls, she was just worried someone might notice something off.
Chen Yao had been planning to persuade Lin Nan otherwise, but he quickly changed his mind: "Right! Don't live with those girls! Living off-campus together would be pretty good."
"Why?"
"What if you learn more and more bad habits from them?"
Lin Nan's personality had already become more and more like a girl's, but if she also picked up all the various bad habits of girls' dormitories, started chasing idols, becoming obsessed with skincare and makeup products, and talking about nothing but fashion, then Chen Yao really didn't know how he would get along with Lin Nan then.
"How about I just stay in the dorm on Tuesdays to Fridays, and live with you on weekends, going out together for two days?"
"We'll see. The class group chat already told us to download software for online classes. Who knows when school will actually start." Lin Nan puffed out her cheeks, bearing a huge grudge about school not starting.
Although living at Grandfather's house meant no one was in charge of her and she had her cousins beside her, without school she couldn't do part-time work either. She could only sit around eating through her savings. She couldn't just hope someone would keep giving her red envelopes, right? And that grandmother's attitude toward her now wasn't good. Although she didn't seem to intend to drive her away, Lin Nan just felt that Grandmother was quite off-putting now.
They hadn't been chatting long before the motorbike had already stopped at the entrance of Grandfather's house.
Lin Nan felt the motorbike stop and poked her head out to look outside, only then realizing they had already arrived home.
"Nan Nan!" Mother had long been waiting anxiously at the entrance. Ignoring the pouring rain, she ran straight out from under the eaves. "You really are something, going out in the rain. What if you catch a cold and get a fever?"
Chen Yao felt like this scolding was directed at him and smiled awkwardly at Lin Nan's mother.
"It wasn't raining when we left, was it?" Lin Nan defended herself, got off the motorbike, and was hurriedly pulled under the eaves by her mother before she could even take off the helmet.
Seeing the mother and daughter preparing to go inside, Chen Yao was about to leave.
"Since you're already here, why leave? Stay and have dinner." However, Mother noticed his movement and looked up with another glare. "Whisking my daughter away on Lantern Festival to get rained on with you, you really are something."
This mother and daughter pair's glares were equally powerless, soft and weak.
But unlike Lin Nan's glare, no matter how powerless this glare was, Chen Yao had to shrink his neck and put on a fearful appearance. After all, this was the mother-in-law he had worked so hard to get on good terms with.
But inside he was blooming with joy.
"Well..." He pretended to hesitate for a moment, and seeing Lin Nan's mother's expression become even fiercer, only then nodded in agreement. "Alright then."
