Chapter 243 : Lunch Time
Chapter 243 : Lunch Time
At noon, Lin Nan and Chen Yao came to the kitchen.
There was still leftover white rice from last night in the refrigerator. Normally Auntie would discard these leftovers, but Lin Nan said she wanted to eat fried rice, so it was reluctantly kept.
Lin Nan picked up the apron hanging on the wall and turned her back to Chen Yao. "Help me tie it."
"Why wear an apron..." Chen Yao casually tied a knot, then yawning, took the lean meat from the freezer and defrosted it under running water.
If only it were a naked apron. Mm.
As a man, he always had some less-than-harmonious thoughts in his head.
"You can't touch cold water right now. I’ll handle it so don’t worry."
"I know."
Lin Nan found a carrot and unhurriedly began peeling it, but her gaze remained fixed on Chen Yao busying himself in the kitchen.
She didn't know why, but cooking together actually felt a bit warm. As if she and Chen Yao had really become family.
In her mind she recalled the scene of Chen Yao cooking last time.
Though this guy's parents ran a restaurant, and from current intelligence it seemed to be doing quite well, Chen Yao hadn't inherited his parents' chef talent.
In middle and high school, Lin Nan often cooked for herself. Chen Yao also liked to recharge his pocket money into games, often leaving him so poor he had no money to eat.
Generally at times like that, Lin Nan would make an extra portion for Chen Yao, and the two would eat one meat and one vegetable dish together in the cafeteria. But sometimes Lin Nan was also poor, so she'd choose to go home and cook.
Chen Yao had also tried cooking in her kitchen... that scene was hard to describe in words.
She recalled those black, bitter cola chicken wings, her face darkening.
That time Lin Nan took one bite and rushed to the bathroom nauseated, vomiting for a whole night.
"Do you want the meat cut into strips or cubes?" Chen Yao suddenly asked Lin Nan who was sitting outside in the dining room.
“Do you even know how to cut it into cubes?" Lin Nan was full of doubt about him.
Chen Yao immediately got angry again. "Even if I can't, I can!"
Lin Nan held the peeled carrot and walked into the kitchen, peeking at Chen Yao who was holding the kitchen knife, clumsily cutting the meat, her face full of helplessness.
When did he start being so stubborn?
Just as this thought flashed through her mind, Chen Yao suddenly cried out, "Crap!"
She saw Chen Yao's finger had been cut with a wound, blood dripping as he clutched his finger making a big fuss. "Lin Nan! Band-aid!"
"I told you that you couldn't..." Lin Nan's mouth twitched. "How would I know where the band-aids are in your house?"
After a bout of chaos, Chen Yao, who had originally planned to help, now stood ashen-faced in the corner of the kitchen watching Lin Nan's skilled knife work, feeling somewhat dejected.
Not only had he failed to help, he'd actually held things back a bit.
He felt a bit guilty inside, but his mouth showed no mercy. "Your cutting doesn't look that great either."
"It's not as good as those master chefs cut on TV." Lin Nan wasn't annoyed and was too lazy to look at him, continuing to speak. "When I first started cooking I also often got cut, but later after finding the right method it got much better."
Meat cubes, carrot cubes, eggs already beaten; Lin Nan selected a few useful seasonings from the cupboard's dazzling array of condiments and placed them to the side. She turned on the range hood and skillfully began preparing to stir-fry.
Fried rice was Lin Nan's best dish. Compared to regular stir-fry dishes, fried rice only required washing one bowl.
Chen Yao silently watched Lin Nan's movements, suddenly feeling a sense of defeat. "I should have learned to cook too."
"It's fine. I just cook more often, so I got skilled at it. Didn't you get second place in the basketball competition? I want to learn that too."
Whether it was from inhaling oil fumes while frying eggs or not, Lin Nan's movements holding the spatula suddenly froze. Her other hand covered her lower abdomen, her brow slightly furrowing.
"What's wrong?"
"My stomach doesn't feel good..."
She hated her period. Even with magic, she couldn't completely escape the troubles of her period. She couldn't even imagine how those girls who hurt so much they rolled around managed to survive.
The vague pain was originally just annoying, but now the pain showed signs of intensifying.
"It's probably because I drank that iced cola yesterday..."
Lin Nan muttered. The pain was still bearable. She just wanted to quickly finish making lunch and rest well in the afternoon.
"Should I fry the rice while you rest?" Chen Yao asked unwillingly.
Lin Nan thought about it and felt that fried rice really wasn't any technical work. You just threw a bunch of things in together, then moved the spatula around to keep it from burning.
So after putting out the needed seasonings, she confidently handed it over to Chen Yao. She curled up frowning in a dining room chair, holding a heat pack against her stomach.
Though fried rice was very simple, Chen Yao actually turned perfectly good fried rice into clumps of mush.
Lin Nan looked at the extremely poor-looking fried rice on the table. Combined with her abdominal pain, she immediately lost her appetite.
Chen Yao must have a talent for destroying good food.
Yet he had no self-awareness at all. He proudly took photos of the rice, preparing to use them to commemorate his first successful dish.
"By the way, want to arm wrestle?" Lin Nan suddenly suggested.
"???" Chen Yao had just finished taking photos and looked at her blankly, completely confused. "Aren't you just asking to humiliate yourself?"
"I beat you at arm wrestling before." Lin Nan's face became stern.
It was probably in eighth grade when arm wrestling was popular in class. Though Lin Nan didn't have much muscle on her body at that time, she was at least a normal male. And though Chen Yao's physique had developed taller than his peers, he didn't exercise much because he hadn't yet started loving basketball.
But it seemed she only won that one time.
"I was just letting you win then." Chen Yao assumed the position, standing his arm on the table, his face completely unconcerned. "I'll let you use both hands. If you can push it down, I'll buy you a skin. If you can't, call me daddy."
She paused, suspecting Chen Yao really did have some strange fetish.
Naturally she wouldn't think this way before, but ever since seeing that adult anime on Chen Yao's computer...
Lin Nan first tried arm wrestling normally. But no matter how much strength she used, turning her whole face red from holding her breath, that arm still didn't move at all. So Lin Nan didn't hesitate to use both hands together, pulling and tugging with all her might.
It still had no effect...
"Your strength is even less than in middle school." Chen Yao even had the leisure to taste a bite of the rice he'd fried. "The flavor's pretty good. But why did it turn to mush as I was frying?"
Lin Nan got angry seeing his unconcerned appearance. She simply sat directly on the dining table and used her body's strength to experimentally push that arm. Chen Yao's hand wavered slightly. "You're cheating!"
She was overjoyed and moved even closer, continuing to press her upper body's strength down. When that arm gradually started tilting backward, she suddenly used too much force, her hand slipped, and she fell onto the table.
Chen Yao was forced to raise his head, feeling the softness delivered to his hands.
Are you really giving me this service?
Lin Nan panicked and hurriedly got off the table, her whole face flushed red. She lifted her foot and kicked toward Chen Yao's face.
