Chapter 225 : Harem

Rural nights were much quieter than in the city.

There were almost no vehicles or pedestrians, no human-made sounds. But if it were summer, the nights would be filled with cicadas and frogs making noise. If someone who'd grown up in the city came here, they probably wouldn't be able to sleep at all in summer from the racket.

Lin Nan tentatively knocked on Wu Guodong's bedroom door. Hearing no response, the three of them tiptoed to the main hall and pushed open the first-floor door.

Fortunately they didn't wake up Grandfather and Grandmother.

Although the rural air wasn't as good as when they were little, it was still fresher than in the city. Lin Nan walked out the door and took a deep breath, but then was startled by gazes she inexplicably imagined from dark corners.

"It'll probably take about half an hour to get there."

Even in the countryside, Grandfather's house wasn't in a bustling area, so every household had one or two electric scooters. Otherwise even buying groceries would be troublesome.

Because of the horror film plus nightmare, Lin Nan still had lingering fears. She looked like a kitten in a new environment, alert to every little movement, constantly getting startled by various sounds of cats and dogs.

The entire four-lane road in front of Grandfather's house was completely taken over by them. They were too lazy to follow traffic rules and walked directly in the middle of the road.

Liu Xinyi walked shoulder to shoulder with Lin Nan, Wu Jiaming led the way in front. The group wasn't as harmonious as one might imagine.

"I always feel like Cousin has changed a lot," Liu Xinyi said quietly to Lin Nan from behind. "Not as easy to get along with as before."

"It's like that when you haven't seen each other for too long. Who told you to go study elsewhere with your dad?" Lin Nan had her hands in her hoodie pockets, occasionally glancing toward street corners, but not daring to appear too frightened. She tried hard to straighten her back to look fearless.

Liu Xinyi had been born here but moved to her father's hometown before even starting elementary school. It was quite far, a full two hours by bus.

Lin Nan had visited once back then and got along well with Liu Xinyi's cousin, even making a childhood marriage pact. But in a flash, ten years had passed, and she'd even forgotten what that girl looked like.

"My sister still asks me from time to time why you haven't come to visit," Liu Xinyi walked like a boy too. "She stopped studying after finishing high school. Now she's looking for work all over the place."

"Really?"

Lin Nan discovered that although she'd been single since birth in her previous life, if she thought carefully about it, it was completely because she'd been too much of a straight guy.

Look at that girl who pursued her in high school, now her social media photos were photoshopped to look like a celestial beauty. And look at Liu Xinyi's cousin. The two chatted as Wu Jiaming in front occasionally interjected. Liu Xinyi's relationship with him rapidly grew closer. The three seemed to return to childhood.

"Do you remember when Lin Nan was chased all over by dogs..." Wu Jiaming was about to tell an embarrassing story about Lin Nan when suddenly his steps halted, staring nervously at the stray dog blocking their path ahead.

"What's wrong?"

Seeing him stop, Lin Nan looked up and also noticed this hungry stray dog.

"Grandfather just told me today that the stray dogs in this area have been attacking people recently." Wu Jiaming scratched his head, somewhat fearfully protecting the two as they retreated. "I forgot about this..."

"Cousin, attack! Bite it!" Liu Xinyi didn't mind making the situation worse.

"Fuck! Even if I could beat it, getting bitten would hurt like hell. The vaccine shots alone would cost over a thousand." Wu Jiaming tried to slowly retreat, but the stray dog kept getting closer. Having grown up in the village, Wu Jiaming had experienced hitting dogs, chasing dogs, and being bitten by dogs. When he was little he'd even been chased all over the street by a goose. "We're going to die here today." Wu Jiaming looked lifelessly at the five dogs in front of them. No way could he beat them.

Just as the stray dogs got closer and closer and Wu Jiaming was about to use himself as bait to attract aggro, suddenly there were loud meowing sounds of many cats around them.

The three were stunned. Following the cat sounds, they saw a dense mass of green pupils glowing in the night.

The five dogs whimpered, tucked their tails, and ran away.

Stray cats?

Lin Nan looked dumbfounded at the cats gradually walking into the streetlight, then was shocked to discover a black cat lying comfortably on a wooden board, being carried by four cats like a king on tour, appearing before them.

This group of cats numbered at least several dozen, surrounding the three people in moments.

"This... Cola?" Lin Nan was even more confused.

"Call me Lady Witch Lilith!" The black cat jumped down, wagging its tail, elegantly walking in front of Lin Nan and looking up proudly. "No matter where I am, no matter what I become, I can still accomplish great things!"

Lin Nan couldn't understand what it was saying. She crouched down, gently stroking Cola's head, hearing the comfortable purring sound from Cola's throat, happily smiling with squinted eyes.

"Come! Let me introduce you!"

She wagged her tail again. An exceptionally tall and large long-haired cat, probably with Norwegian Forest Cat bloodline, walked out from the cat formation.

"This is my boyfriend!"

"This is boyfriend number two!"

"These are all my harem!"

"Now I just need to wait until I'm in heat!"

"Since I've become a cat! I have to experience it before changing back!"

Lin Nan couldn't understand. She just watched it walk back and forth, meowing non-stop.

Wu Jiaming had also met Cola before, but had only heard it ran off in heat. Now with an incredulous expression, he asked, "Is it introducing its friends to you..."

"It's not that smart, is it..." Lin Nan scanned the surroundings and discovered this group of stray cats was actually sitting obediently in a perfect circle.
