Chapter 216: A Leader’s Kindness Is Her Greatest Risk (1)
Her voice sounded like thunder in broad daylight.
No one in their right mind would want to break an oath that brought so many benefits, not just for herself, but also for her future descendants.
There was no way... someone from the Vixelle family would willingly let go of people who had been forced to stay loyal to them for years.
But the more they thought about it, the more they realized that Roxanna wasn’t like the other members of the Vixelle family. If anything, she was better than all of them.
All this time, most of them still felt awkward around her. Her face was exactly the same as her evil twin’s, and the fact that they were still bound by an oath only made things more uncomfortable.
Maybe that was why they kept their distance. For years, they had chosen to avoid the Vixelle family rather than deal with them and risk everything turning into a disaster.
On top of that, the evil Roxanna had always found ways to make them suffer. That alone was enough to make them never want to face her again.
So maybe... if they changed the whole tribe, they wouldn’t keep thinking about the evil Roxanna and Loba all the time.
"Roxanna, what are you doing?" Luan quickly walked over to her, lowering his voice as soon as he stood beside her. "You can’t just say something like that as if you’re giving away your hunted prey right away."
Roxanna raised an eyebrow and tilted her head slightly. "Luan... that’s not the same," she said softly. "These people have suffered under that cursed oath for so long. The reason they chose to take it was because they needed a place to stay safe—not because they wanted to be trapped and tortured for years."
In other words, they were no different from children in an orphanage. They came hoping to find protection and love, but if they were unlucky, they would only find pain instead.
After all, people who are vulnerable are the easiest to take advantage of and manipulate.
"I know that, but..." Luan opened his mouth, then closed it again. He hesitated a few times before finally speaking. "If you free them from the oath now, then you might have trouble getting their help to build this settlement."
From his words alone, Luan sounded like someone who only wanted to use others for his own benefit. But honestly, Roxanna could understand why he thought that way.
[It’s been so long since he had people he could rely on...] Roxanna thought. [Maybe he’s afraid this tribe will fall apart.]
[Oh, poor Luan. He must be scared of being alone again.]
Luan frowned. He had only said that because he didn’t want those people to turn against Roxanna—but why was his wife thinking in such a kind way instead?
Why was it that whenever it came to her husbands, her thoughts became so positive? But when it was about herself, her mind would be full of negative thoughts.
"Zeir, give us a minute," Roxanna said before gently pulling Luan into the hut to talk in private.
"Luan—"
"Do you really trust them that much?" Luan cut her off right away. "What you just offered isn’t something small. This isn’t only about whether they want to stay here or not, but—"
"They might turn against me?" Roxanna cut him off. "Yes, I’ve thought about that too. I mean, there’s no way some of them don’t still have some hatred toward Loba’s descendants."
Before Luan could reply, Roxanna continued, her voice softer this time. "But Luan... it’s really hard to lead this tribe when I know they’re only staying because they’re forced to."
The oath wasn’t just a way to control people anymore, it had become something closer—really close, to be honest—to slavery.
[It’s not just them who feel awkward around me... I feel the same way around them.]
Roxanna let out a soft sigh. [Most of them are actually kind to me, like Marlow and Grandma Mia. Even Skiv treats me well.]
[They’re all so kind... and yet I’m still keeping them tied down with the same oath Loba used to trap them here.]
As long as that oath still existed in the Vixeria Tribe, Roxanna knew her heart would never truly feel at ease.
When Luan understood what she was really feeling, the tension in his body slowly faded. The frown on his face softened.
"Alright, I understand," he said, letting out a soft sigh. "I get what you mean. But still, this is risky... and I just don’t want anything bad to happen to you."
Roxanna smiled faintly and reached out, gently holding Luan’s hand.
"I know," she said softly. "And I’m really grateful that you’re worried about me."
Luan looked at her for a moment, his fingers tightening slightly around hers. He didn’t pull away.
"But I don’t want to lead them like this," Roxanna continued. "I don’t want them to stay because they have no choice. I want them to stay because they truly want to."
She lowered her gaze for a second before looking back at him again. "If they choose to leave... then I’ll accept it."
[At least this way, my children won’t grow up surrounded by people who secretly hate them.]
[I really don’t want them to go through something like that.]
"Alright, alright... how about this..." Luan paused, taking a moment to think. "You don’t have to remove the oath all at once, but maybe you can do it step by step."
Roxanna tilted her head slightly. "Step by step?"
Luan nodded. "Start with the ones you trust the most. The ones who have already shown that they won’t betray you." He crossed his arms, thinking carefully. "If nothing bad happens, then you can slowly free the others."
"That way, if something goes wrong, you can still control the situation," Luan added in a serious tone. "It’s safer for you and for us, including the baby."
Roxanna thought about it for a moment, then nodded. "You’re right... I think I should do that."
