Chapter 215: A Mother’s Wish
Chapter 215: A Mother’s Wish
Now that she truly felt better after sitting quietly beside Zeir for a while, Roxanna found herself thinking that her husband could be a great meditation teacher if he had been born in the modern world.
"Leader! Your husband said you want to talk about something important with us!" one of the Vixeria Tribe members, Norman, called out loudly. He looked excited, as if he was expecting something interesting.
But because of his shout, everyone immediately turned their eyes toward Roxanna, and that made her feel nervous again.
"Just wait for a moment," Zeir spoke before Roxanna could say anything. "My wife is trying to clear her head first because she drank too much alcohol."
Norman raised one of his eyebrows. "But she didn’t even touch the al—"
"Just wait," Zeir cut him off. His tone was calm but firm, and it was enough to make Norman and the others stop pushing Roxanna.
He then turned his head toward Roxanna and said, "Take your time. As long as you need."
Roxanna nodded. She placed her hand in front of her chest and took several deep breaths. Moments later, she finally nodded to herself and spoke with confidence, "I’m ready now."
"Alright." A soft smile appeared on Zeir’s face. "But if you feel nervous, just remember, I’m right here with you."
Roxanna nodded again before jumping down from the terrace. Zeir clapped his hands a few times, drawing everyone’s attention.
"Everyone, our Leader has something important to say!" he announced.
Some of them still looked a little tipsy, but as soon as they heard it was something important, they quickly tried to sober up.
Aelin and Skiv, who had been eating grilled meat, stopped and walked over to stand near Roxanna.
[Why are there so many people looking at me?] Roxanna thought, trying to calm her racing heart. [What’s the point of meditating if I’m still this nervous?]
[And why are my other husbands standing so far away? I feel even more nervous when I can’t see them.]
Zeir immediately made eye contact with her other husbands, silently asking them to move closer to Roxanna.
[Oh... they’re coming closer? Why? I didn’t even ask them to...]
"They’re ready for you," Zeir said softly before she could think too much. "Why don’t you greet them first?"
"O-Oh... yes, you’re right," Roxanna whispered.
Seeing that she was still struggling to calm herself, Zeir reached for her hand and held it tightly.
Magically, all the nervousness in her heart slowly disappeared. [I see... it seems like I calmed down earlier not because I was meditating, but because of Zeir’s touch.]
Her other husbands clicked their tongues inwardly at the same time because Zeir had stolen their chance to hold their wife’s hand.
But whatever. As long as their wife felt comfortable, they wouldn’t make a fuss about it.
"Good evening, everyone." Roxanna cleared her throat when her voice came out slightly shaky.
Zeir’s thumb gently brushed over the back of her hand, grounding her.
She took a small breath and continued, her voice steadier now, "First, I want to say that I’m really happy to see all of you enjoying yourselves like this. I hope you’re satisfied with the food at this feast."
Roxanna paused for a moment, letting her words settle among the crowd. The warmth of Zeir’s hand in hers gave her the courage to keep going.
"So... I won’t take too much of your time," she said softly. "I just want to share some good news, something that some of you may already know."
She smiled and gently placed a hand over her stomach. "I’m... carrying a child right now." Her voice softened even more. "It may still be very small, but I can feel sense that my child will grow into someone strong in the future."
A few people gasped quietly, while others looked at her with surprise and joy.
"But no matter what they become in the future," Roxanna continued, "I want to ask all of you to treat them kindly, because..."
She paused, lowering her head as her expression turned a little sad. "Because I don’t want my children to go through the same things I did."
The crowd fell silent when they heard her words. As far as they knew, Roxanna was a neglected child of Loba, someone who had been left alone to live in the middle of the forest.
Her past—though it was a made-up story—was so heartbreaking that a few of them began to tear up as they remembered it.
"Leader, we will never treat your child the way your father treated you!" Marlow spoke up first, his voice full of emotion. "We’ll give them so much love that they won’t ever feel alone!"
Others quickly nodded in agreement.
"That’s right!"
"We’ll protect them!"
"They’ll grow up surrounded by love!"
Roxanna bit her lower lip, trying her best not to cry because their reaction truly touched her heart.
Her story in this world might be fake, but in truth, her life in the past wasn’t that great either.
As a child who grew up in a poor orphanage, she rarely received genuine love. That was why, when the people of Vixeria said they would love her children with all their hearts, Roxanna couldn’t help but feel at ease.
At least, she didn’t have to worry that her children would have a bad childhood like she did or like her husbands did.
"You’re all... really kind," Roxanna said softly. "I’m truly grateful that I was able to meet all of you."
She paused, taking a few slow breaths to calm herself. After wiping the corners of her eyes, she continued, her voice steadier now. "But... raising a child isn’t just about surrounding them with good people."
She looked at everyone, her gaze gentle but serious. "We also need to create a good place for them to grow. A place where they can feel safe and live well."
Some of them looked confused, while others didn’t react much at all.
"What do you mean, Leader?" Grandma Mia asked. "Isn’t our life already good right now? We have black crystals to protect us from demon beast attacks, a well, and a roof over our heads."
Roxanna let out a small, soft sigh. She had expected this. To them, what she was saying might sound unnecessary or even strange.
"Yes, you’re not wrong, Grandma Mia," Roxanna said gently. "Our tribe isn’t bad at all. We already have things that help us survive."
She paused for a moment, choosing her words carefully. "But... surviving is not the same as living well," she continued softly. "And if we want our tribe to truly stand on its own, there are three important things we still need."
She looked at them one by one, making sure they were listening. "First... food," Roxanna said. "Right now, we depend too much on hunting. It works for now, but it’s not stable. There may come a time when we can’t find enough prey."
A few people exchanged glances, slowly beginning to see her point. "That’s why I want us to learn how to grow our own food or even raise our own livestock," she continued. "If we can do that, we won’t have to worry so much about shortages."
She raised a finger. "Second... safety." Her expression turned a little more serious. "The black crystals help us, but they’re not enough on their own. If something stronger comes, we won’t be fully prepared."
The mood in the crowd grew heavier. "We need better protection, stronger defenses, and we need to be ready, not just to survive, but to protect each other."
Then she raised another finger. "And third... a better place to live." She glanced around the tribe. "We have huts, yes. But we can make them better. They can be safer, warmer, and more comfortable, especially for children because I want our future children to grow up in a place where they don’t have to be afraid every day."
The crowd fell silent, but this time, it wasn’t confusion, they were thinking.
Roxanna took a slow breath, then added, "I know this won’t be easy. It will take time, and we might make mistakes along the way, but if we work together... I believe we can do it."
After a moment, someone—Norman—raised his hand. "So you mean... you want to rearrange our settlement?"
Roxanna took a deep breath and nodded. "Yes. I want to rebuild our settlement from zero, turning it into a place that is truly ideal for us. That’s why I want to make sure that all of us agree with this decision, because after this, our journey won’t be easy. We can’t do it half-heartedly."
They looked at each other, still thinking hard, because rebuilding a settlement was not an easy task.
"I won’t force you to follow my orders," Roxanna said again. This time, her words made them hold their breath for a moment. "Actually, I’ve also been thinking... maybe now is the time to let go of your cursed connection to the Vixelle bloodline."
