Chapter 689: The Dream Ghost Allowed to Live

The lights in the corridor flickered. The testers in the lab screamed as things mutated. The ghost patterns on the wall moved. They became hard to follow. The patterns should be constant, but they appeared to move around. The giant fortress appeared to be someone’s body that could be controlled freely.

“It looks like the captain cannot wait anymore.”

Gao Ming narrowed his eyes as he placed his palm over his chest. The captain showcased immense ability. The presence of life and death permeated the fortress. It was hard to guess what the captain’s power was.

A few seconds later, the scene before Gao Ming changed. They came to the part that was at the core of the headquarters.

The cubicles were stacked like boxes. The expressionless humans worked tirelessly. They didn’t seem to feel fatigued. Their upper bodies moved nonstop, but their immobile lower bodies were hidden behind the tables.

“This is the heart and brain of the investigation centre headquarters. We have to handle more than several million supernatural reports daily. We also need to arrange the various branches to deal with the shadow world.” Jing Tuoshen explained kindly to Gao Ming. Orders came out of the cubicles every minute. The workers appeared to be stuck to their posts.

“Won’t they feel tired?” The leader of Team One asked. His fingers trembled. “Why do I sense the presence of ghosts on them?”

“You are indeed someone valued by Wan Jie. They are not humans.” When Jing Tuoshen said that, everyone in the cubicle stopped working. The cold faces revealed creepy smiles as they stared at Gao Ming and the leader of Team One.

The platform that held the cubicles slowly opened to reveal a hidden conference room. Five people in uniform sat around the table. There were males and females. They were of various ages. The five looked normal from the waist up, but from the waist down, their bodies were connected to a network of crazed blood capillaries. The scariest thing was that everyone in the cubicle had their lower bodies attached to the blood capillaries too.

“You’re finally here.” The person who took the middle seat was an old man about eighty. His hair was white, and he was kept alive by the blood vessels. “Not too long ago, your friend infiltrated this place. I wanted him to take my place, so I took his head. I hope you don’t mind.” The old man was talking about Zhang Ding. When Gao Ming visited Everlasting Life Apartments, Zhang Ding’s group sneaked into the headquarters. They encountered a Dream Ghost. Zhang Ding had to stay behind to help the others escape.“The fact that we allowed him to escape was already a great sign of kindness on our part.” The youngest among the five was a boy. He stared at Gao Ming. His eyes were mature and calm. Even though the five were connected by the blood vessels, they had distinctive personalities. When they met an impasse, they would hold a vote. The majority wins.

“Jing Tuoshen, you have five captains?!” Gao Ming only wanted to deal with the real leader.

“You can say there are five of us, but there are also millions of us. However, there is only one of us.” A kind woman among the five spoke. She radiated a motherly warmth. She could earn people’s trust easily.

The conference table slowly moved. When the five shared a look, the platform moved again. The cubicles formed a wall. The platform morphed into a deep well. Inside the well was a giant ball of flesh that had a barely discernible human shape!

The flesh was painted with dream trace. Endless vessels spurted out of its chest. The vessels pierced the humans’ stomachs and connected everyone.

“The actual captain of the headquarters… is a corpse?!” Gao Ming had a pair of clear eyes. He used the power of the God of the Future and saw the karmic relationship on the meat.

“I know you have many questions. I will answer them.” The old man became energised. “Han Hai was vanquished by the other twelve Blood Cities. No ghosts are allowed to appear here. This is a taboo zone until Xin Lu’s Unmentionables transported many living consciousnesses here. They carried the most beautiful dream and wished to turn this into a world where ghosts and humans could coexist. They worked hard for that goal. That was when we appeared.”

“Your appearance had to do with the saviours?!”

The old man nodded slightly. “Han Hai is a forbidden zone. Any kind of change will cause death. A lot of humans and ghosts were killed. Their hope and desire towards life became an obsession. That obsession united with the corpses buried in the Blood City and became what you see now.”

“Is this the body buried in Han Hai’s giant grave?” Gao Ming was shocked. He had left Han Hai and knew that Han Hai was a grave.

“No. To be precise, this is just a piece of the broken meat. The complete corpse is still hidden in the shadow world. This piece of flesh united with living obsession and escaped.” The old man was careful with his words.

A piece of meat could be as strong as a Dream Ghost. How powerful was the entire corpse? However, another question came to Gao Ming. Whose corpse was this? Who was buried in Han Hai? Every Blood City had its owner, but Gao Ming had been to many places and couldn’t find anything related to the owner of Han Hai Blood City.

“Does this corpse belong to Han Hai’s former owner?”

Unmentionable would be forgotten after they were killed.

“I know you will come here eventually. The headquarters is not as evil as you think. We merely stand our ground and have been using our ways to protect this city.” The woman explained, “After the saviours noticed the flesh had mutated, they didn’t take it for their own. Instead, they turned it into a new hope. They protected it. As the meat became stronger, the saviour started to educate it. They modelled the Han Hai Investigation Centre Headquarters after the Xin Lu Investigation Centre Headquarters.

“Everything was progressing nicely when something happened to Xin Lu’s Unmentionables. They chose to explore deeper into the inner world.”
