They walked along the long aisles between the shelves, looking for the numbers on the side.
"Fifty-three... fifty-four..." Harry looked up at the numbers. They were going up, which meant they were going in the right direction.
But if they were going the right way, why hadn't they heard Sirius's voice by the time they reached the eighties?
"Maybe he's dead," Cohen said, feigning a guess.
Harry's face went even paler.
"Cohen!" Hermione whispered as a warning.
"He wouldn't be," Harry mumbled. "He has to be in there... maybe he's unconscious... or his mouth is covered..."
Harry walked faster than them until he reached aisle ninety-seven—and there was nothing there.
"He's got to be at the end—" Harry said in a hoarse voice. "I can't see from here."
He led the way, taking them down the aisle toward the end, where the prophecy orbs on the shelves glowed with an eerie blue light.
"There are no living souls here, Harry." Cohen had found a prophecy orb that was making a sound, so he wanted to stop Harry and grab it.
In theory, only people related to the prophecy could hear the voices inside the orb... So, was there a prophecy about Cohen here, too?
"How do you know that?" Harry was getting a bit testy from not finding Sirius.
"I can see living souls," Cohen reminded him. "I told you before. But there aren't any souls here."
"Harry, the Dark Lord tricked you," Hermione finally managed to say, her voice not sounding triumphant at all, but full of panic and unease. She tugged at Harry's robes. "Let's go—quickly. Maybe we can get out before we run into anyone..."
"Harry, can you hear a sound?" Cohen asked. "A prophecy orb is making a noise."
Cohen decided they should each get their own; either way, it would end up in his hands.
"A sound... there is one—" Harry looked around for the source of a faint sound while Cohen began climbing the shelves with a ladder.
But soon—
Their eyes landed on the same prophecy orb at the same time.
Cohen had climbed the shelf first, and to his surprise, the prophecy orb he could hear didn't have his name on it.
[S.P.T. to A.P.W.B.D]
[The Dark Lord]
[And]
[(?)]
Below the question mark, someone had written "Harry Potter" in a different ink. The abbreviation meant Sybill Trelawney to Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore, but if it was Harry's prophecy orb, only Harry should be able to hear it...
Cohen took the orb down. The moment he held it, the sound of the prophecy echoed in his ears.
"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... a child of a wizarding family... born as the seventh month dies..." Sybill Trelawney's raspy voice in a prophetic trance said. "The power the Dark Lord knows not... one of them will die... one must die... and then... one of them will cause a greater darkness to fall over the sky..."
"Cohen?" Hermione saw Cohen stop on the ladder and asked softly, "Cohen? What did you hear?"
"The prophecy in the orb," Cohen said. "It's about Voldemort and someone born in July."
The prophecy didn't say it was just one person, and it was quite different from the original. Both Cohen and Harry possessed a power Voldemort could never master, both were born in July, and likewise, one of the three would certainly die—and that would be Voldemort.
But the part about "a greater darkness to fall over the sky"...
Cohen felt like it was about him. If the prophecy already said there would be a greater darkness, why did Dumbledore still have so much hope for "making Cohen good"? Maybe that was the difference in their actions? One chased and killed people because of a prophecy, while the other tried to teach people because of one.
"That's the same voice I heard," Harry said, pointing at the prophecy orb in Cohen's hand. "You couldn't hear it?"
"Only those connected to a prophecy can hear it..." Hermione whispered. "Harry, you and Cohen must both be in the prophecy..."
"Here, take it," Cohen handed the orb to Harry. "You can listen to the prophecy inside—then smash it."
"Huh?" Harry was surprised by Cohen's suggestion to smash it. "It must be important—if it's about Voldemort..."
"It's precisely because it's about Voldemort that you should smash it," Cohen said. "As long as we remember the prophecy, we'll be fine. Voldemort probably lured you here just to get this orb. He probably didn't hear the second half of the prophecy. Smashing it will make him miserable for a while."
Hearing that it would make Voldemort miserable, Harry immediately thought Cohen's plan made perfect sense. Harry put the orb to his ear, listened to the prophecy inside, and then—
CRASH!
The prophecy orb was smashed by Harry, making a crisp sound.
"We should hurry..." Hermione looked around warily. "The Dark Lord and the Death Eaters might be close... The Ministry is unguarded, and you..." Hermione didn't want to use "Harry, you've been tricked" again.
"If this was a trap... that means Sirius is safe, right?" Harry suddenly realized.
"There aren't even any traces of magic here, which means Voldemort hasn't been torturing anyone," Cohen said. "So... yes, the dog-person is alive and safe—the only problem is our situation might not be."
"Go!" Harry rushed past the broken prophecy orb on the floor, dragging them toward the exit.
To their surprise, the way out was incredibly quiet. They didn't run into any Death Eaters or even Voldemort himself. They returned to the room with the twelve doors—but something chilling had changed.
Besides the door they had just come out of, another door was open. It was the door leading to the Executioner's Chamber, the one they had marked. Someone had gotten in there while they were searching for the prophecy orb.
"Is it Voldemort?" Harry asked, his breath coming in short gasps.
"I don't think so," Cohen narrowed his eyes.
From the doorway, they could see the archway at the bottom of the tiered room and a tall, new cross-like structure inside. A gray-haired figure was hanging on it.
"It's someone looking for me," Cohen said. "Looks like I have to go in."
"We're coming with you," Harry said firmly.
"No need to use that 'I'm ready to die' tone..." Cohen said, rubbing his forehead. "It's not like it's a huge problem. I just want to see who it is."
