Chapter 46
Chapter 46
Annette's eyes widened in surprise. She said, "Didn't you just say that your secretary might gossip about it?"
"If he can't even keep his mouth shut, he is not qualified to be my secretary," Connor said as if it was a matter of course.
Annette realized that she had been fooled again. She walked over and was about to complain, but a refreshing smell came to her nose. It was pine.
The pleasant fragrance made her forget what she wanted to say. Connor seemed to have the same feeling.
He lowered his head and kissed Annette.
Annette was stunned for a moment, then she pushed him away.
However, Connor pulled her into his arms.
Annette hit his chest and groaned in pain.
Connor quickly let go of her and said, "Does it still hurt? Are you alright?"
Annette blushed. She walked past him and left his office quickly.
She covered her flushed cheeks and reminded herself that she would never bring food to Connor again.
He was dangerous.
Annette spent the afternoon busy.
After work, everyone in the office gathered around Amanda, who had just been promoted today, and asked her for a treat.
Amanda was in a good mood and agreed to treat them to dinner. She also invited the four part-time lecturers to join them. And told them that they must come.
Everyone took their seats and almost occupied half of the restaurant.
Just as Annette found a table for two people, Amanda walked over and sat opposite her.
"Annette, do you mind if I sit here?" Amanda said.
Annette smiled, "Of course not."
Amanda said with a smile, "You are my lucky star."
"Me?" Annette was confused.
Amanda nodded. "You and Catherine seem close. Are you friends?"
Annette shrugged and replied, "We only had lunch together at the cafeteria. Well, twice."
"Okay. Then, you'd better watch out for her," Amanda said after taking a sip of her drink.
"Why?" Annette asked in confusion.
"She knows clearly that you took the blame for her, yet she still pretends to be innocent and approaches you. She may smile at you on the outside but do something nasty behind your back."
Annette was puzzled. "I took the blame for her, how?"
"You probably don't know why Thea targeted you," Amanda said with a smile.
Annette shook her head. "Amanda, do you know?"
"Thea is Mr. Horton's lover. But he has another lover from the four part-time lectures. Thea knows about this. Judging from the dress you were wearing yesterday, she probably thought you were the one. That's why she targeted you," Amanda explained.
Annette said in shock, "So, are you saying Catherine is Mr. Horton's lover?"
Amanda nodded. "Yes. I saw them shopping together one day. Believe me. I won't lie to you."
Annette looked at her in surprise. "Amanda, there is one thing I don't understand. Why are you being nice to me?"
Amanda pursed her lips and smiled, "Didn't I just say that you brought me luck? I was promoted because of you."
Annette smiled helplessly and said, "Now that you mention it, I'm even more confused."
"I am not clear about your relationship with Mr. Norman. But, I was promoted this time because Mr. Norman found out that I was on your side during your quarrel with Thea, so he gave me a chance," Amanda said frankly.
Annette almost cried out. She lowered her voice and asked, "You mean, Connor... Mr. Norman has asked you about that?"
"Yes. I can't tell you the details. If you are in any kind of trouble while working here, just come to me. I will spare no effort to help you," Amanda said with a smile.
The shock in Annette's heart could not be quelled.
She couldn't believe that Connor would do so secretly.
After dinner, someone suggested having more fun in other places.
Amanda hoped that they could enjoy themselves and let them make their own choices.
Annette wanted to go home, saying that her stomach was upset.
Amanda said with concern, "Really? Then let me take you home."
Annette quickly said, "It's OK. I can take a taxi home."
Curtis, who was the most popular guy in the Training Department, stood out and said, "Amanda, I'm not going either. Let me take Annette home. You can check on others."
Curtis' actions drew others' attention.
"Since when did Curtis become so warm-hearted?"
"Curtis has high standards. So, that depends. He'll be extra nice when he gets to look after a pretty girl like Annette."
"Are you a little jealous?"
Someone joked.
Annette felt a bit awkward.
However, Curtis seemed to be used to it.
Annette said, "Amanda, Mr. Potter, I can go home myself. Well, have fun later."
She nodded at them and turned to leave.
Amanda did not insist.
Annette walked through a block alone and waited for a bus.
Suddenly, a white car stopped in front of Annette.
The window went down, and it was Curtis.
"Annette, get in the car. I'll take you home."
"Mr. Potter, thank you. I'm fine taking the bus home."
"Just get in. I just told Amanda that I would take you home safely," Curtis said again.
Annette hesitated for a moment before getting into the car.
Curtis started the car. As he drove, he said, "Just now, they were just joking. Don't mind it."
Annette did not speak. She just nodded and smiled.
"Annette, you don't talk much," Curtis said.
Annette pursed her lips. "Yeah, kind of."
"You've been in the company for three days. Do you get to know everyone in our department?" Curtis asked.
"Not yet." Annette shook her head.
"You probably don't know who I am yet."
Annette hesitated. It would be rude if she said that she did not know Curtis.
Seeing that she was silent, Curtis smiled, "My name is Curtis. I am 29 years old and single. I worked here for five years. And, nice to meet you."
