Chapter 21
Chapter 21
Just as the few of them were in a deadlock, Annette rejected Kyle.
Kyle gave a pained look.
Seeing Kyle's expression, Lena sensed something was wrong. She immediately stepped forward and pushed Roxanne.
Lena said, "Roxanne, are you crazy? What does Crystal Pack have to do with you? Who are you to speak ill of the Luna of our pack?"
Roxanne was a strong she-wolf, and she did not take Lena seriously.
She reached out and pushed Lena to the ground. She said, "If I were crazy, I'd kill you for Annette before anything. Do you think Crystal Pack can scare me? I just can't believe Annette would be roommates and friends with a wanton like you. You make me sick!"
Kyle ignored Roxanne's words. He felt bitter about Annette's sudden rejection.
His heart ached, and his wolf was growling in pain.
Apart from the pain of being rejected, he realized for the first time how much he had hurt Annette.
He knew his mate. Therefore, he knew how stubborn Annette could be. Although Annette was a rogue, she remained proud. She would not give in or bow to anyone easily.
However, because of him, Annette had been bullied by his mother, Luna of Crystal Pack.
Before today, he thought that he had been a great mate to Annette.
He didn't realize that in Annette's eyes, he was no different from a torturer who helped his mother hurt her.
He finally understood why Annette had to reject him.
He ignored Roxanne and Lena's arguments and just stared at Annette.
After a long time, he helped Lena up from the ground, took Lena's hand, looked at Annette, and said, "I, Kyle White, of Crystal Pack, accept your rejection."
The second Kyle finished speaking, Annette felt the sting she had been suffering vanish.
She also felt that the bond between her and Kyle was fading. Though it had not been completely broken, the feeling was fading away.
Before she could dig into the feeling, Kyle continued, "Now, I'd like you to meet my girlfriend, Lena."
Both Lena and Roxanne were stunned.
Yet Annette did not feel anything. She simply nodded calmly and said, "Wish you two the best."
She turned to look at Roxanne and said, "Roxanne, let's go. I am hungry."
After she finished speaking, she pulled Roxanne's hand and left.
From that day on, Kyle never pestered Annette again, and her life had been peaceful onwards for two weeks.
Her sprained ankle had recovered, and she returned to work.
One day, when Annette was working in the café, Austin showed up.
"I'll have an iced Americano," Austin said with a smile.
Annette raised her head, looked at Austin, and frowned.
"Don't look at me like that. I just want some coffee," Austin said frankly.
Annette lowered her head. She quickly dealt with his order and said, "Sir, your coffee will be ready soon. You can wait over there."
Austin smiled but did not move. He said, "No one's ordering now anyway. I might as well stand here for a moment."
Annette did not say anything.
Austin continued, "When do you get off work? I'll pick you up. Come to dinner with me tonight. I'll take you to eat your favorite food."
"No need. I have to tutor my students in the evening," she refused.
Austin said with guilt, "Ann, are you still mad at me? It has been half a month already. Are you sure you still don't want to talk to me?"
She said seriously, "Mr. Fisher, I'm working. Do you mind waiting for your coffee over there?"
Austin sighed. He was surprised that Annette was still angry.
He didn't leave after getting his coffee. Instead, he waited in his car outside the café.
After Annette got off work, Austin got out of the car and stopped her from leaving.
Annette looked at him and said, "You may leave. I have to go tutor my students."
"There's always time for dinner," Austin said, unwilling to give up.
"I'm busy," Annette refused him again.
"How long are you going to stay upset? You're killing me," Austin said.
"I'm not upset. I just feel that I should keep my distance from all the members of Black Thorn Pack. After all, I work for Alpha Connor now. You have your position, and I have mine. There is nothing wrong with everyone holding onto different positions and sticking to their own," Annette said.
"Do you think Alpha Connor only sees you as an employee? Ann, I'm your family, while he means nothing to you. I just want what's best for you. Give me some credit, OK?" Austin tried to persuade her.
"I'm not a businesswoman, so I'm not as calculative as you do. Besides, he doesn't have a clue about my identity at all. In his eyes, I am nothing but a hybrid rogue. What can he get from me? I just don't get it. Why do you all have to picture my relationship with him as so filthy? Do you think I'm trying to seduce Alpha Connor as much as Alpha Lance does? After all the humiliation my mother suffered because of Alpha Lance, do you really think the werewolf world is still appealing to me?"
She turned and was about to leave.
Austin grabbed her wrist and said, "Ann, wait."
Meanwhile, a black car stopped in front of the café, and Connor got out.
He glanced over Annette's face and then fixated his gaze on Austin.
Austin's expression instantly turned cold.
Connor said, "Annette, I'm here to pick you up."
Annette pulled her hand back.
She said to Austin, "You should go now. I've got things to do."
Then she turned around and got into Connor's car. Austin felt more upset.
Connor looked at Austin, and then got into the car with a smug look on his face and closed the door.
The car vanished from Austin's sight. He clenched his fists and said to himself, "No. If things keep going this way, I will lose Ann forever."
