Chapter 207
Chapter 207
"You hoped that he would accept me and offer me a happy life, but he treated me like garbage and abandoned me. Now, he was using you to threaten me to go back to that so-called home. How ironic. I promised you not to seek revenge or let the past ruin my life. I may have to break my promise. If I disappoint you, please don't blame me, okay?"
Annette said, her voice choked with sobs.
She wanted to cry.
She could only expose her true self recklessly in a place where there was nobody around.
Suddenly, Annette's phone rang.
She took out her phone and saw that it was Alina calling. She wiped away her tears and answered it.
At that moment, Annette turned into a strong-minded warrior once again.
Alina's gentle voice sounded on the phone.
"Ms. Hall, how are you doing?"
Annette said coldly, "Ms. Grace, do you have something to talk to me about?"
"I'm a little worried about you."
Annette looked up at the clear sky and felt much better. She said, "I'm fine. Thank you for your concern."
"Ms. Hall, I called you today because I wanted to confess one thing to you."
Annette frowned and asked, "What is it?"
"I am sorry. I am afraid that you and Connor will be harmed because of me."
Annette preferred direct people. Alina's attitude seemed awkward and deliberate. Alina was now Lucas' mate, and Annette didn't want the relationship between Lucas and Connor to get worse.
"What's exactly going on? Ms. Grace, I would appreciate it if you could tell me directly." Annette's relationship with Connor was on thin ice, and she didn't care much about Alina's feelings.
"Ms. Hall, I'm so sorry. It was me who revealed your background."
Annette's heartbeat quickened. She stood up straight and asked, "What did you say?"
"That day, I was so angry to see others speculating on your relationship with Austin. They didn't know that you and Austin were siblings, but I did. I didn't want you to be burdened with a bad reputation, nor did I want others to mistake Connor being unfaithful, so I called a reporter and exposed the truth in Connor's name. I thought you and Connor would be grateful to me. However, I never expected Connor to be so angry when he found it out, and he even warned me not to meddle in others' affairs. He told me that you hated the Black Thorn Pack, which was why you didn't reveal the truth on your own. I feel sorry for what I did to you."
Annette was puzzled. Connor didn't do anything.
That was right. He knew her well. How could he do such a thing to harm her?
It wasn't him. Annette breathed a sigh of relief in her heart. At first, she didn't believe that Connor would expose her background, and she gave him the chance to explain, yet he didn't tell her the truth.
If he explained it, she may not be so angry.
She was so angry because the person she valued the most had hurt her.
Alina continued, "Ms. Hall, I'm sorry. Will you forgive me? I've been feeling guilty since yesterday and wanting to apologize to you, yet Connor told me not to get involved anymore and that he would take full responsibility. He asked me to stay out of it. After thinking about it all day, I realized that if you minded it and Connor took the blame for something I did, you must be angry with him. I don't want my mistake to cause any conflict between you, so I decided to apologize to you."
Annette's heart was in piercing pain.
So much so that she didn't even hear what Alina said afterward.
Connor knew how much harm Annette would suffer, yet he still took the blame for Alina.
He would rather have Annette hate him than let her blame Alina.
Annette rested her hand on her chest unconsciously.
Connor told her that he loved her, but what he did proved that he still cared about Alina the most.
Annette thought in despair, 'Since he loves Alina so deeply, why is he so nice to me?
Why did he bring me warmth and then push me into an icy cave?'
Annette hung up the phone and squatted down, resting her forehead against the edge of the tombstone and weeping silently.
She seemed to understand why Sharon chose to give up her life.
What was the point of living if no one in the world cared about her?
"Connor, you give me such insincere love. You hurt me deeply. Why did you make me hate you?"
Their life had once been so sweet. Was it just an illusion?
Annette doesn't know how long had passed when a familiar voice sounded.
"Why are you sitting on the ground? Let me help you up."
Annette turned her head to look at Connor. As expected, in Akron, he could find her wherever she went.
Someone with Connor's status would never love a hybrid like her.
Annette withdrew her gaze coldly without paying any attention to Connor.
As long as she could lock her heart, no one could hurt her anymore.
As long as she remained cold and indifferent, Connor would stay away from her. This way, the two people who should not have had any interactions would return to their normal lives.
Connor squatted down and wanted to help Annette up.
Annette flinched and said, "I'll return to the Black Thorn Pack."
Connor looked at her with surprise.
Annette turned around, her lips curling into a cold smile.
"Why are you so surprised? You are the one who turned me into Lance's tool."
Connor said angrily, "Just now, Lance talked to you about that?"
Annette looked away from his face and turned to look at Sharon's photo.
"They want me to go back. I have no way to refuse them because I have to protect Sharon."
Annette said self-mockingly, "Today, I finally realized that whether a person was alive or dead, he could be used by others."
Connor held Annette and said, "Come back with me to the Blood Moon Pack. I'll deal with the Black Thorn Pack."
Annette raised her hand and pushed his arm away.
"No. Everything was caused by you. If you hadn't exposed my identity, I wouldn't have known that Lance could be so disgusting. Connor, I've been stubborn since childhood, and I will never accept kindness from the person who hurt me."
She added in her heart, 'Connor, you helped me out of the abyss, and you pushed me into an even deeper one.
'I intended to spend my whole life with you.'
Annette looked at Connor and couldn't bring herself to say those words. Since the outcome wouldn't change, why bother speaking up and giving others a reason to mock her?
Connor said angrily, "I never expected Lance to stoop so low as to use you. I won't spare him."
"Whatever you do to him, it's none of my business."
Annette propped herself up and stood facing Connor.
Because of Alina's call, she realized that she could only rely on herself. The help provided by Connor would fall through due to various reasons, and although they had once loved each other, they never stood equally.
There was quite a difference between their heights. Annette looked up at Connor with a bright and relieved smile.
Connor felt worried for no reason.
