Chapter 29
Chapter 29
Chapter 29 Don’t Blame Her, Blame MeFrom the moment Wen Yufeng picked up Qin Qing and placed her on the desk, the entire classroom fell into a silence so deep that you could hear a pin drop.
—No one in the class had ever seen anything like this.
And if the first “I was wrong” made most of them think they were hearing things, the second one completely stunned them.
They had only ever seen the Wen Yufeng who could laugh nonchalantly in the face of school-wide criticism and probation. But this Wen Yufeng, who softly admitted his mistake with a low, slightly hoarse voice—they didn’t recognize him at all.
Even Li Xiang, sitting in the back, muttered in disbelief after a long moment of shock.
“…Zhao Zirui, pinch me, I think I’m still dreaming from last night.”
“…”
Zhao Zirui just rolled his eyes at him. “So, we’re all still dreaming together with you?”
“That’s true.”
Li Xiang sighed, slumping over his desk, looking defeated—
“Even in my dreams, I wouldn’t dare imagine Yu-ge admitting he was wrong… And, for some reason, I have this feeling that our carefree days are coming to an end.”
Zhao Zirui glanced at Li Xiang and, for once, didn’t respond with his usual sarcasm.
—
Because at that moment, he was thinking the exact same thing as Li Xiang.
In the midst of the classroom’s silence, the dazed Qin Qing slowly regained some clarity.
She gently struggled, her voice soft and weak.
“Put me down…”
Without a word, Wen Yufeng lowered her from the desk.
Then, he turned his back to her and squatted down—
“I’ll take you to the school clinic.”
Qin Qing frowned slightly.
“I’m fine… I can make it through one more class—”
“Your body temperature is so high that if you try to last through one more class, I’ll have to call an ambulance for you.”
Wen Yufeng interrupted her firmly.
Qin Qing’s lips pouted slightly, her small face showing signs of resistance.
Wen Yufeng remained in his squatting position, glancing back at her—
“Or do you want to change the position?”
“…”
As soon as he said this, everyone else in the room was still clueless, but Qin Qing quickly realized what he meant. She immediately used every bit of strength she had left to quickly climb onto his back.
—
If he carried her out in front of everyone like that, she would rather die of embarrassment.
“…”
Wen Yufeng turned his face slightly, a faint smile tugging at his thin lips.
However, as he felt the warm, abnormal breath from the girl lying against his neck, his smile faded, and his sharp eyebrows knitted together.
Without wasting any more time, he stood up with her on his back and walked out of the classroom.
As he left, he called back—
“Li Xiang, get her excused from the next math class.”
“Got it.”
Li Xiang instinctively responded.
…
In all of Qin Qing’s memory, this was the first time she had ever been carried on someone’s back like this.
So close that there was no gap, close enough to hear each other’s breathing, their skin almost touching.
Feeling a bit uneasy, she wrapped her arms around his shoulders, her hands resting against his broad, reassuring shoulder line. Despite wanting to let go because of the unfamiliar warmth, every time she glanced to the side, she felt a wave of vertigo.
…How tall is this person?
“One eighty-six.”
A low, hoarse voice rumbled through his chest.
Qin Qing froze.
Then she realized that she must have said the question out loud.
But before she could feel embarrassed for her slip, she was overtaken by an inexplicable sense of loss.
—He’s over twenty centimeters taller than her.
The genetic gap is truly one of the most despairing things in this world.
Sensing the girl on his back’s sudden drop in mood, Wen Yufeng paused his stride and tilted his head slightly.
“What’s wrong?”
“…”
Qin Qing slowly rested her head back down, her cheek pressing against his white shirt. But then she quickly lifted her face again, as if she had been burned.
Her dark, wet eyes were filled with innocence and a bit of confusion.
When he didn’t get an answer after waiting for a while, Wen Yufeng assumed she was just feeling unwell, so he didn’t press further.
It wasn’t until they reached the school clinic and he stepped inside that he heard her soft voice from behind.
“Why are you so tall…”
Wen Yufeng paused for two seconds, then couldn’t help but laugh.
Being sick tends to make people sensitive and vulnerable, and more dependent, letting down their guard.
Qin Qing was no exception.
Hearing his low laugh, she wrinkled her small nose and, in a listless tone, said, “But no matter how much I try, I can’t grow taller.”
Wen Yufeng continued walking up to the clinic on the second floor, still carrying her, and chuckled as he replied,”Why do you want to grow taller?”
Qin Qing frowned as she thought about it.
“I could see things I can’t see now, reach things that are placed too high, and clean the blackboard without needing a stool…”
As Wen Yufeng carried Qin Qing to the second floor, he saw the sign for the emergency room from a distance and walked towards it.
At the same time, he spoke, “From now on, I’ll carry you to see those things, I’ll help you reach whatever you need, and I’ll clean the blackboard.”
As he finished speaking, he pushed the door open and entered.
The school doctor, sitting behind his desk, adjusted his glasses and looked at Wen Yufeng first, then at Qin Qing.
After a moment of silence, the doctor spoke,”You two again?”
Hearing this, Qin Qing looked up and recognized the school doctor who had treated her for heatstroke during the military training. She blushed with embarrassment.
The doctor stood up and gestured for Wen Yufeng to place Qin Qing on the bed in the examination room.
“What happened to her this time?”
Before Qin Qing could answer, Wen Yufeng, while placing her down, replied,”She has a cold and a fever. Her body temperature should be at least 38 degrees.”
The doctor took a thermometer and handed it to Qin Qing.
“Getting sick as soon as the temperature drops? This girl really has poor immunity. That’s not good.”
Noticing the oversized school jacket Qin Qing was wearing, the doctor frowned.
“You young girls these days, always prioritizing style over warmth—did you leave home without a coat this morning? It’s not good to prioritize looking pretty. If you catch a chill and it affects your joints or bones, you’ll suffer for it later on. You may not feel it now, but as you get older, even a slight chill could cause you sleepless nights…”
Seeing that Qin Qing, already feeling unwell, was being scolded into lowering her head even more, Wen Yufeng couldn’t hold back any longer.
He straightened up, his thin lips parting slightly.
“Don’t blame her. Blame me.”
The doctor, about to say more, was momentarily stunned and shifted his gaze from Wen Yufeng’s downward to upward.
“What do you mean?”
Wen Yufeng’s expression remained calm.
“It’s not her fault. Just treat her illness. If you need to scold someone, scold me instead.”
“…”
The doctor was taken aback by his words and stared at Wen Yufeng for a few moments before giving him a disgruntled look and heading to the pharmacy.
…
After taking her temperature, which was indeed 38.5 degrees, and with Qin Qing insisting she didn’t want an injection or IV, they left the clinic with just some fever-reducing and cold medicine.
However, before they left, Wen Yufeng and Qin Qing had a bit of a standoff over whether he would carry her back or let her walk on her own.
In the end, seeing Qin Qing biting her lip and stubbornly holding on, Wen Yufeng couldn’t bring himself to argue further, so he let her walk back by herself.
Even so, Qin Qing, wearing a school jacket that covered half of her skirt, followed by a school “bad boy” in just a white shirt without a jacket, attracted nearly every student’s attention as they passed.
Under the weight of all those curious glances, Qin Qing wished she could shrink her head into the oversized school jacket.
Fortunately, the walk back to the classroom wasn’t too long. Soon enough, Qin Qing and Wen Yufeng were standing at the door of Class 6’s classroom.
Seeing Mr. Shen Liang standing at the podium, Qin Qing paused, while Wen Yufeng narrowed his eyes slightly.
“…Mr. Shen.”
They both spoke almost simultaneously.
Shen Liang could see the confusion in Qin Qing’s eyes, so he explained, “Here’s the situation: your teacher, Mr. Fu, has had a flare-up of his liver condition and will need to be hospitalized for treatment. I’ll be temporarily taking over as your homeroom teacher for the rest of the semester. Your math teacher will also be reassigned, but due to the sudden nature of the situation, a replacement hasn’t been arranged yet, so we’ll have a physics class instead.”
He paused and then turned to address the entire class—
“But don’t worry, once the new math teacher is assigned, I’ll make sure to catch up on any missed lessons.”
Upon hearing this, the students immediately responded—
“No need to catch up, no need at all!”
“Mr. Shen, please don’t give us back those lessons!”
“Yeah, we’re happy to have you teach, no need to catch up…”
The students, who were always fond of Mr. Shen’s engaging and humorous teaching style, were more than happy to have him in the classroom. If they had to attend class, they much preferred it to be one of Mr. Shen’s.
Shen Liang, well aware of what the students were thinking, simply smiled and didn’t respond, though he had his own thoughts on the matter.
Then, Shen Liang turned to the two still standing at the classroom door.
His gaze lingered for just a second on the oversized school jacket Qin Qing was wearing before lifting naturally.
“Qin Qing, Wen Yufeng, go ahead and take your seats. And Qin Qing, if you’re not feeling well, let me know so you can go home early. Don’t push yourself too hard.”
Qin Qing shook her head. “I’m feeling much better now.”
With that, Qin Qing quietly returned to her seat, followed by Wen Yufeng—who didn’t return to his seat until after she was settled.
He picked up her water cup from the desk and turned to Shen Liang at the podium.
“Mr. Shen, she needs to take her medicine before lunch. I’ll go get some water for her.”
“…”
Shen Liang’s eyes flickered, but in the end, he nodded without saying anything.
Wen Yufeng, not expecting any objections, promptly walked out.
…
When the final class of the day ended, Wen Yufeng was the first to stand up in the classroom.
Under the watchful but silent gazes of the other students, he walked straight to Qin Qing’s desk.
“Do you need glasses?”
The unexpected question left Qin Qing momentarily stunned before she shook her head after a couple of seconds.
Wen Yufeng’s lips curved slightly.
“Wait for me.”
“…”
Qin Qing, who had been about to get up, hesitated. Remembering she was still wearing his school jacket, she found it hard to refuse.
So she nodded lightly.
Wen Yufeng then walked over to Shen Liang, who was gathering his books at the podium.
“Mr. Shen, will you be in charge of all Class 6 matters for the rest of the semester?”
Shen Liang was taken aback, lifting his head to look at Wen Yufeng with interest.
—
In his more than a year of teaching in Class 6, this infamous school troublemaker had never initiated a conversation with him.
And certainly not one this serious.
Thinking this, Shen Liang smiled and nodded.
“Yes, although Mr. Fu’s condition isn’t too serious, he still needs to undergo a minor surgery—after that, he’ll need time to recover, so it wouldn’t be suitable for him to overexert himself. So, I’ll be your homeroom teacher for at least this semester.”
Wen Yufeng nodded in acknowledgment.
Then, his gaze shifted to Fang Xiaojing, who was still lingering by Qin Qing’s desk.
His dark eyes grew cold for a moment before he looked back at Shen Liang, his lips moving slightly—
“Mr. Shen, I would like to request to be desk mates with Qin Qing.”
