Chapter 83: Nothing to Do with Me
Chapter 83: Nothing to Do with Me
Hearing about treating children, Xu Xiangbei became interested, "How old is the child? Boy or girl?"
"A six-year-old boy, just at the age to start school. Everyone in the family is going crazy with worry. We’ve been to several well-known hospitals in Yanjing but couldn’t cure him. I want you to give it a try."
"Alright, I like helping women and children. Where is the child?"
"Tonight at 7, at the Number One suite in the Marriott Grand Hotel."
Marriott Grand Hotel, Xu Xiangbei parked in the parking lot, walked through the magnificent revolving door, and entered the hotel lobby.
The central musical fountain of the hotel, with its rhythmic water sprays in music, glowed in many colors under the lights.
A boy dressed in an English-style suit, with clear brows and eyes, innocent and cute, was playing and jumping around the narrow marble platform beside the fountain.
There were some water stains on the platform, he slipped underfoot, lost balance, and was about to fall into the musical fountain, but Xu Xiangbei grabbed him by the arm.
Xu Xiangbei smiled as he leaned close to the boy’s tender face, educating him, "Little friend, you can’t play up here, if you fall in, your clothes will get wet. Moreover, there are wires here, getting electrocuted would be even more dangerous."
The boy blinked his star-like big eyes, looked at Xu Xiangbei, those eyes were bright as if speaking. He didn’t appreciate Xu Xiangbei’s words, made a whole set of faces at him, then turned and ran off.
Xu Xiangbei, familiar with the terrain, quickly reached the Number One suite’s door, hearing Director Tang from the department of traditional Chinese medicine discussing some Yin and Yang balance and pharmacology theory, purely armchair.
The girl serving at the suite door opened the suite door for Xu Xiangbei.
Several people were already seated inside: Dean Zhang with a smiling face, Director Tang with a grim expression, and the gentle and refined Zhang Xuesong. Only one middle-aged man was unfamiliar to him.
The middle-aged man, with a square face and large features, bright eyes, slightly graying at the temples, was holding the arm of the clever and handsome boy who had made faces at him earlier.
Director Tang fell silent upon seeing Xu Xiangbei arrive; whatever he said would be ridiculed by Xu Xiangbei as the talk of a quack, so in Xu Xiangbei’s presence, he dared not speak much.
Seeing Xu Xiangbei come in, Dean Zhang smiled at him, Zhang Xuesong stood up to introduce, "Lao Jiang, this is the Divine Doctor Xu, Xu Xiangbei, whom I told you about."
Sighting Xu Xiangbei, the middle-aged man first exhibited surprise, not expecting the Divine Doctor Xu to be a young man.
Then he stood up with a full smile on his face, extending his hand to shake hands with Xu Xiangbei, but Xu Xiangbei ignored him, merely nodded, and sat down in an empty chair, casually taking out a cigarette to smoke.
Dean Zhang and Zhang Xuesong, familiar with Xu Xiangbei’s character, were indifferent, but Director Tang sneered coldly, mumbling softly that he had not even a bit of manners, a country bumpkin.
Zhang Xuesong said to Xu Xiangbei, "Mr. Xu, this is Director Jiang, newly appointed as the Public Security Bureau Chief here in Jiangcheng, and also my old classmate."
Director Jiang proudly responded, "What Director Jiang, just call me Lao Jiang."
That was merely Director Jiang’s modesty, unexpectedly, Xu Xiangbei directly called out, "Hehe, you’re the Public Security Bureau Chief, how many bad guys have you caught over your years as a cop?"
Director Jiang showed a bit of displeasure; being appointed directly from the central authority in Yanjing as the Public Security Bureau Chief, even the city committee secretary in Jiangcheng paid him respect, calling him Director Jiang.
Though introduced by Dean Zhang as Divine Doctor Xu, at such a young age claiming to be a divine doctor? Based on his decades of experience as a cop, didn’t this young man seem like a con artist, having tricked Dean Zhang and Zhang Xuesong?
Director Jiang’s eyes sharp, he looked at Xu Xiangbei, put on an official tone, and laughed, "From my hand, not one thousand but eight hundred criminals have been caught. Make sure you don’t do anything bad; if you do, even as my good friend, I won’t show mercy."
Director Tang promptly flattered, "Director Jiang is wise and mighty, fair and impartial, a good parent officer for us."
Listening to Director Tang’s words, Director Jiang beamed with pride, laughing, "As the people’s parent officer, naturally I must speak for the people, it’s expected."
"Unfortunately, your son is a mute, and you can’t do anything about it."
The suite suddenly turned quiet, Dean Zhang and Zhang Xuesong smiling awkwardly, Director Jiang’s face turned ugly, his son Jiang Xinwen huddled between his father’s knees, playing on the phone as if hearing nothing.
Director Tang adopted a lecturing posture, "Xiao Xu, mind your words."
"You quack, unable to treat the patients, are not qualified to speak. Can you cure this little mute? Can you?"
Director Tang, furious, pointed at Xu Xiangbei speechless, pitifully seeking help from Director Jiang with pleading eyes.
With Xu Xiangbei repeatedly calling his son a little mute, Director Jiang stood up abruptly, grabbed his son’s hand, and angrily said to Zhang Xuesong, "Sorry, Dean Zhang, Zhang Xuesong, I suddenly have something, can’t dine, goodbye."
Xu Xiangbei smoked, mockingly sneered, "Go on, Public Security Bureau Chief, thinking for the people, yet for your own face, relinquishing your son’s lifelong happiness. What kind of father, what kind of people’s parent officer?"
Dean Zhang and Zhang Xuesong exchanged glances; they did not understand the reason behind Xu Xiangbei’s provocative actions, pondering why he incited anger in this police chief, the uncle-nephew duo dared not speak, choosing to wait and see.
"I suspect you’re a con artist, not at all capable of treating people, a doctor with a parent’s heart, such as yourself constantly exposing others’ flaws, lacking any medical ethics, how can you call yourself a divine doctor."
Xu Xiangbei sneered coldly, pulling Director Tang along, "Whether I can treat or not, it’s not up to you, it’s up to me. What medical ethics, when a quack with ethics can’t cure, what’s the use?"
Director Tang shouted in anger, "Don’t drag me into this, it’s none of my business."
"Do not leave."
Xu Xiangbei abruptly grabbed the boy Jiang Xinwen’s arm; Jiang Xinwen saw Xu Xiangbei arguing with his father and holding onto him, pouted at Xu Xiangbei, raised his little fists, kicked at Xu Xiangbei.
Seeing Xu Xiangbei hold his son, Director Jiang’s face shifted, angrily pointed at Xu Xiangbei, "Let him go, or you’re not done with me."
Bang, a loud slap rang out, Xu Xiangbei heavily slapped the back of Jiang Xinwen’s head, Jiang Xinwen’s eyes rolled and fainted, while Xu Xiangbei still fiercely held onto Jiang Xinwen’s little arm.
Seeing his son inexplicably knocked out, Director Jiang was frantic, eyes widened with rage, charged at Xu Xiangbei, willing to fight for his son’s safety as any father would.
Yet Director Jiang found he couldn’t hit Xu Xiangbei, for Xu Xiangbei held Jiang Xinwen as a shield, positioned between himself and Jiang, worried he’d hurt his son, Director Jiang anxiously circled around.
