Chapter 194: Finally Waiting for You
Chapter 194: Finally Waiting for You
Xu Xiangbei couldn’t stay idle. He walked out of the waiting area to check inside the Jiangxin Building to see if there really weren’t any empty seats left.
He climbed all the way to the sixth floor, and sure enough, it was packed full, not a single empty table in sight. Some tables were even shared by several groups.
He wanted to check out the seventh floor, but he couldn’t get up there; the doors to the stairwell were locked, and the elevator was being watched. Only customers with a private room reservation could go to the seventh floor.
Just as he returned to the first floor, someone walked out of the elevator, wearing glasses, looking scholarly, with a friendly smile. Xu Xiangbei found him familiar; it was Secretary-General Li Liang.
When Xu Xiangbei saw him, Li Liang also noticed Xu Xiangbei, and from afar, he extended his hand with a smile and greeted Xu Xiangbei, "Dr. Xu, hello, long time no see."
Xu Xiangbei shook hands with Secretary-General Li, noticing Li’s energetic spirit and excited expression, "Secretary Li, you’re glowing. Seems like there’s some good news lately."
Li Liang couldn’t contain his joy and excitement and whispered into Xu Xiangbei’s ear, "Thanks to you, Dr. Xu, after your treatments, my wife’s expecting! Haha, in a few months, I’ll be a father."
This was expected. Xu Xiangbei clasped his hands together with a wry smile, "This is indeed wonderful news. Hehe, take good care of your wife. It’s not easy to come by things like this. When are you going to treat me to a celebratory dinner?"
"Of course, not only will I treat you to a meal, but I’ll host you with the highest honor and invite you to a meal at my place."
The highest honor of hosting is a family banquet, something Xu Xiangbei had told Li Liang himself. When Li Liang brought it up, the two immediately burst into knowing laughter.
"I’ll wait for your call."
Seeing Xu Xiangbei heading toward the waiting area, Secretary-General Li asked in confusion, "Dr. Xu, are you here for a meal?"
Seeing the long queue, Xu Xiangbei was annoyed, "Why else would I be here if not to eat? To admire the scenery? I had a sudden urge today to come to the Jiangxin Building with a friend for morning tea. I didn’t expect it to be so crowded. We have to wait in line too."
Secretary-General Li smiled mysteriously and lowered his voice, "Others need to queue, but you don’t need to, now that you’ve run into me. We regularly invite VIPs to Jiangxin Building for morning tea, and we always book two or three private rooms throughout the year. We’ve just used one, so there should still be two available. Let me arrange it for you."
Xu Xiangbei was overjoyed, "You guys are really clever, booking private rooms here all year round. Thank you so much."
"It’s nothing, just a small favor."
Secretary Li immediately called the owner of Jiangxin Building, "Boss Gu, I have a friend of Secretary Qin here, Dr. Xu. Could you arrange a room with a nice view for him?"
Listening in, Xu Xiangbei was even more delighted. Secretary-General Li really had clout, not only arranging a room but also a room with a great view.
"Room 1 on the seventh floor? That room has a great location and can see most of the Yangtze River. Okay, I’ll tell him to meet you there. Yes, it’s Dr. Xu."
He smiled at Xu Xiangbei, "All set. Boss Gu is waiting for you at the front desk. Just tell him you’re a friend of Secretary Qin."
Having arranged the room for Xu Xiangbei, Li Liang went back to accompany his guests and bid farewell to Xu Xiangbei.
Ouyang Jiahui was waiting in boredom—waiting to eat is the most tedious thing. What annoyed her was how many people in the waiting area were looking at her exploding pomelo hairstyle, making remarks and laughing.
She stomped on Jack’s foot, "When we get back, change my hairstyle. I’m becoming a pre-dinner joke."
Jack said helplessly, "Wasn’t this your own choice of style? How can you blame me?"
Ouyang Jiahui pouted slightly, "That’s one thing, but why did you bring President Shan? I don’t like him. He’s so pretentious, making me look bad here."
Xu Xiangbei came humming a tune and affectionately patted the unenthusiastic Gu Xiangyi on the shoulder, "What’s wrong? Didn’t sleep well last night?"
"I’m hungry. If I knew, I would’ve had milk and a fried egg at home. At least it’s better than being hungry."
Xu Xiangbei loudly announced, "No need to fret. We have a private room now."
Upon hearing they had a room, Gu Xiangyi saw the queue ahead and thought Xu Xiangbei was joking, "Big Brother, there’s still a long line of people in front of us."
"No need to wait here. Come with me. A friend lent me a private room."
Gu Xinyan suddenly perked up and high-fived Ouyang Jiahui lightly, who sighed in relief, pouting, "Great, no more waiting here, no more being a spectacle."
Gu Xinyan laughed, "Hehe, if you became a circus monkey, we’d collect ticket fees for you."
"You’re always kicking me when I’m down. Be careful, or I’ll tell Brother Liu not to let you audition."
Jack wasn’t in a hurry, focusing on his freshly done red nails with a self-satisfied smile, though attracting disdainful looks from a few middle-aged women who pointed and whispered. But Jack was thick-skinned and completely ignored the judgment of society.
Hearing that Xu Xiangbei had secured a private room, President Shan, though a bit dismayed at being outshone, was surprised, "A private room? How did you manage that?"
Xu Xiangbei gave President Shan a disdainful look, "Quit the nonsense, just come with me."
Boss Gu was waiting at the front desk. With so many customers and the special instructions from Secretary-General Li about a doctor guest, he didn’t recognize each guest arriving at the desk, so he kept a watchful eye, making the guests think he was afraid someone would dine and dash.
Xu Xiangbei approached the front desk, smiling, "Who is Boss Gu?"
Seeing someone looking for him, Boss Gu’s eyes lit up, "That’s me. Are you Dr. Xu? Introduced by Secretary-General Li?"
"I’m Xu Xiangbei, a friend of Secretary Qin."
Boss Gu immediately beamed and led Xu Xiangbei to the seventh floor, wearing a proud expression, "Dr. Xu, finally, I’ve been expecting you. We’ve reserved Room 1 on the seventh floor for you. It’s by the river and has an exceptional view and sight lines. That room is usually reserved for Secretary Qin, but since you’re his friend, it’s yours."
Following Xu Xiangbei up, President Shan suddenly realized with surprise how, despite Xu Xiangbei’s young age, he was indeed a friend of Secretary Qin, leading to newfound respect and a more courteous demeanor.
Room 1 had a seat with a perfect view of Jiangxin, and President Shan, with a flattering smile, pulled out a chair, "Dr. Xu, this is the seat of honor, for you to sit."
Xu Xiangbei quickly waved his hand, "You’re hosting today, and we’re guests. You’re the host, you should sit."
The two were at a stalemate until Ouyang Jiahui sat down with a plop, "You two are so long-winded. If you won’t sit, let me sit. Jack, sit next to me; this spot has the best view."
Jack cheerfully ran over and snuggled next to Ouyang Jiahui, "You’re truly my best friend."
