Chapter 85
Chapter 85
Dylan
“Dylan! I need you here. There's a commotion out here on the street. I can't handle it alone.” Bert sounded anxious.
“Where is Chelsea?” My forehead knotted as the screams of angry shifters reached me via mind link.
“I don't know. I can't find her.”
“Try to calm them down. I'll be there right away.”
Rants and shouts reached my ears before I even stepped foot on the territory of Lord Hills.
“We're starving, waiting for your aid while here you do nothing but flaunt your wealth in your fancy suits and dresses!” Confronting the armed guards, a female shifter carrying a two-year-old baby in her arms shouted.
"Quiet! Every..." A mud landed on my chest before I barely caught my breath arriving at the scene.
"Dylan!" I heard Chelsea's voice and looked around for her, only to spot her hiding in a safe corner.
“Take that man and kill him!” She then turned to shout at the guards before I even figured out where the mud came from.
“What the fuck are you all waiting for? You heard me!” Chelsea yelled once again.
Before the guards could take any action, I growled. That calmed everyone down.
“What is all this about?!” I demanded.
“You don't even know what's going on? How could you not know! You're our Alpha. It's your responsibility to take care of us!" A male shifter stepped forward. "Our monthly aid is way overdue! We're starving!"
"What's going on with the aid?" I turned to Bert. "I transferred the money to Chelsea before the Alpha Gather..."
"Ouch!" I gasped as another mud was thrown straight at me.
The guards acted right away to defend me, pushing the shifters away when they fought back.
"Stop!" I shouted at the guards, for fear they may hurt the shifters.
"Listen, guys!" I cleared my throat and shouted out again. "I wish I had a valid reason as to why you didn't receive your monthly aid. But I did approve the budget several days ago."
"I promise that Luna Chelsea and I will get into the bottom of this, and give you..." Noticing that the shifters became less emotional, I intended to continue but got stopped once again.
"No! We don't want her as our Luna. She asked the guard to kill us just now. Didn't you just hear her?!" A shifter protested strongly just as I thought the situation was put under control.
"Yeah! We don't want her! We want Luna Cherry! She cared for us. She fought with us. She made Starsmoon our home, instead of our grave!" Another shifter echoed.
"Luna Cherry! Luna Cherry! Luna Cherry!" The crowd chorused aloud.
“These shifters live at the outskirts of Lord Hills. Cherry used to take good care of them.” Bert read through the bewilderment on my face.
“Quiet, guys! How about you go and get some food at the pack charity now? And I'll give you a plausible explanation for the overdue aid within three days.” I tried again.
"Fine." A senior shifter nodded after exchanging words with his community members. "But don't let us down, Alpha Dylan. Hope you're as reliable as your father."
Watching the shifters leaving for the pack charity, I let out a long sigh of relief.
"I cannot believe you, Dylan! You didn't even defend me when those lowly shifters slandered me?!" Chelsea barked at me right after we returned back to the pack house.
"Lowly shifters?! How dare you!" I was irritated by Chelsea's words. "They're Starsmoon's pack members, just as important as you and me!"
"What's wrong with you?! You've been totally out of character after announcing me Luna at the Alpha Gathering!" Obviously, Chelsea wasn't expecting my fit of rage. "You almost killed me last night, and now this?!"
"You know what, Chelsea?!" I took a step closer towards her. "You're touching my bottom line. My Luna is never expected to belittle my pack members. You not only failed your duty as my Luna, but threatened to kill them!"
"And they never revolted when Cherry was taking care of them!" Bert chimed in.
My wolf got excited once again at the name Cherry!
Realizing that I was about to shift, Chelsea's demeanor changed in an instant. I could feel her wolf cowered at mine.
"Listen, Dylan!" Hiding the terror in her eyes, Chelsea tried to defend herself. "I didn't mean to delay their monthly aid. You know I'd been busy with the Alpha Gathering and our mating ceremony lately..."
"Stop it! You'd better go and have this matter settled now!" I couldn't stand her making absurd excuses any longer.
"Ouch!" A cry escaped my lips after Chelsea ran away quickly, tail between legs.
"Dylan!" Bert rushed over as my whole body twisted in huge pain.
"What the fuck is going on with me?!" I demanded after quite a few seconds when the pain finally eased.
"Your link with your true mate is weakening, Dylan!" Bert said in an urgent tone. "You have to know the truth right now, or your wolf would continue to suffer! And you could die."
"Truth?" I was shocked. "What truth?"
"The truth that you lost your memory because of wolfsbane! The truth that Cherry is your true mate! And the truth that you've been cheated by Chelsea all this...Dylan?! Dylan!"
Bert's voice was getting smaller and smaller as I eventually blacked out from the dagger pain in my chest.
After a long, tiring nightmare, I came back to myself as my eyes greeted Bert's worried look.
"Thank God, you're awake!"
"Chelsea! My wolf couldn't feel hers!" I struggled to my feet at the idea that she could be fleeing.
