Chapter 60
Chapter 60
Cherry
Dylan's incident left me deeply troubled. I lay awake the whole night after tucking Fern into bed eventually. With my father, Bert, Chris and Heather being away from the community, I had to face all this alone.
After dropping Fern at school and reassuring that her daddy would be back from his "business trip" soon, I rushed to hospital immediately.
From the door of the ward, I saw Dylan lying in the bed, pale and still.
“This is so unlike of you, mate. I'm not used to seeing you like this,” I muttered to myself while eyeing him.
The doctor walked towards me, wearing an expression that made me anxious.
“Luna, I have some bad news. We detected wolfsbane in Alpha's body. He is now reacting to it. I'm afraid that, from right here, his condition would get worse and he'll lose memory.”
"Wolfsbane?! How's that possible? Aren't I the only one who got the poison during that war?" Not believing what I heard, I turned to stare at my husband with my mouth half-opened.
"Alpha is awake now. You can go and talk to him." The doctor suggested.
"Dylan, do you feel any better?" I asked softly, walking towards Dylan's bed.
"I'm better now. Thank you for asking...miss. And you're?" Dylan looked at me, confusion etched on his face.
"Is this your new joke, D-Dylan?" Not believing in my ears, I asked in fear. I, his mate, was the first thing he forgot?!
“What is happening? Why do I feel like he does not know me?” I turned to the doctor. Panic rose within me, mingling with the concern that had already taken root.
Not answering my question, the doctor gave me a heavy nod, confirming my guess.
“It's me, Cherry.” I tried again, my voice shaking. When I took a step closer to him, Dylan flinched.
It seemed that he regarded me not only as a stranger but as an enemy. And with me around, he and his wolf remained alert all the time.
“Dylan my love, you don't remember me? It's Cherry,” I repeated, not wanting to give up.
Not answering me, he winced, gripping his head as if trying to suppress the torment within. I could see distress in his eyes, and it tore my heart.
“My head hurts! It hurts! Make this stop, ah!” He shouted. It seemed that a sudden wave of pain struck him.
I froze for a second, but subconsciously rushed up to hug him.
“It's okay, Dylan. It's okay. You're safe here.”
As I stepped closer, he recoiled. With a forceful push, he shoved me away. I stumbled back, my body hitting the floor. Though physically unharmed, the emotional impact from his rejection was sharp and piercing.
“Dylan?” I called, still couldn't believe what was happening.
“Get out!” he shouted, his voice raw with frustration and pain.
“Dylan, please. I cannot go. I cannot leave you alone,” I begged on the ground. Tears welled up in my eyes, a mixture of sorrow and helplessness.
“Didn't you hear me? I said get out of here! Get away from me,” he growled. His eyes were red, full of malice and anger against me.
The doctor rushed over to help me up.
“Luna,” he called, voicing out his worry.
I managed to regain my composure and turned to the doctor. “Is Dylan really losing his memory? Is there any chance that he will recover?”
“Sorry, Luna Cherry. But I cannot see when or if Alpha will regain memories. Amnesia could be temporary, and we hope that it's the case for the Alpha.”
I bit my lower lip, suppressing my tears. That uncertainty was a heavy weight on my chest, and I could barely breathe.
"Please keep Dylan's condition a secret, doctor." I told the doctor, and decided to leave for the better of Dylan.
Back in the packhouse, I paced across bedroom and changed my mind.
“No. I cannot leave Dylan alone. I need to see him. I need to check up on him and make sure he's fine.” I talked to myself.
My steps echoed down the empty hallway as I reached Dylan's room, only to find it vacant.
Panic surged through me, and I called out for him while searching for his figure.
“Dylan! Where are you?”
“Dylan, it's Cherry! Can you hear me?”
“Dylan…"
And yet, I got no response
I asked the hospital staff to search every corner, but Dylan was nowhere to be found. There was even no trace of him on the security camera.
It was then that the chilling truth dawned on me, he was gone, vanished without a trace.
As I stood there, my heart racing, our Gamma Jason called.
“Luna Cherry!” Jason said breathlessly. “One of our guards saw Alpha Dylan running out of our territory. He looked furious, and the guard was too afraid to stop him. Is everything OK?”
My heart clenched painfully, but, as the Luna of Starsmoon, I knew I couldn't lose my composure at this critical moment.
Taking a deep breath, I gave an order. “Jason, send squads to roam around the boarders of our territory. We need to get Alpha back.”
“Make Dylan's missing a secret, or this will put us all in danger.” I added before hanging up.
