Chapter 227
Chapter 227
Fern's Perspective
"Spare them..." His voice was low and raspy, as if the breath had been squeezed from deep within his throat—fragile yet firm.
Elena laughed softly, her dagger at some point in her hand. The sharp tip of the blade gently slid down his cheek, leaving a fresh trail of blood on his already scarred skin. She leaned in close to him, whispering in his ear, "You really make me sick to my stomach, to have fallen this low. Didn't you always despise me? What now?"
He didn't respond. He just opened his gray-blue eyes and gazed deeply into mine.
My heart trembled.
He was saying goodbye.
"No!" I struggled desperately, attempting in vain to rush toward him. But the man in black behind me held me down in an unrelenting grip, a cold gun barrel pressed against my back.
Elena stood and turned to the henchman beside her, her tone chillingly calm. "Show him what humiliation truly means."
Before I could react, I heard a loud thud. The sickening sound of a club hitting flesh and bone made me shudder.
He didn't cry out in pain, didn't even grunt.
But his body shook violently.
"Don't!" My voice nearly tore through my throat, but no one listened as the clubs slammed into him again and again. The crack of breaking bones was clear in my ears.
Elena chuckled softly. "Since you're on your knees, shouldn't she respond in kind?" She turned to look at me, the corner of her lips curling into a sneer. "What do you think, Fern? Are you willing to forgive the man who once hurt you?"
My whole body trembled. I clenched my teeth and dug my nails into my palms.
I hate him… I hate his indifference, his misunderstandings, his past cruelty. But now, seeing him kneeling here, enduring these tortures for me, my hatred seems to dissolve, replaced by a deep, bone-deep pain and remorse.
He's already paid too much for me...
What right do I have to hate him?
Tears slipped down my face. I closed my eyes, my voice trembling but resolute: "I forgive him."
A deathly silence fell around us.
Elena's eyes widened slightly, clearly not expecting me to say those words.
And he, the man who had never bowed his head even under torture, finally showed the faintest trace of a smile.
As if he had exhaled a long-held breath, his shoulders relaxed just a fraction, and then, unable to keep himself upright any longer, his body slumped forward and collapsed into a pool of blood.
His body crumpled to the ground, his bloodstained lips barely parted, as if he was trying to say something. I couldn't make it out, but I knew it was a call to me.
My vision blurred with tears, and fear gripped my heart like never before.
He couldn't die.
He couldn't.
"Please... it's enough... it's enough..." My voice had gone hoarse, desperate in its pleading, but Elena just laughed softly, savoring my suffering. The pleasure in her eyes made it hard to breathe.
Finally, he stopped moving.
"I forgive you... please, don't die..."
Tears fell, mingling with the blood on the ground. I looked at him as though I could see the man who had once held me in his arms on that full moon night, whispering reassurances that everything would be all right.
The corners of his lips lifted slightly before he lost consciousness completely.
My world shattered.
My pupils contracted, and I desperately struggled to crawl toward him, but the man in black weighed me down so heavily that I couldn't even touch him.
"No! You can't die!" My voice nearly ripped through my throat.
Elena stood up, her gaze cold as she looked at the man on the ground. The smirk faded from her face, replaced by a frosty expression. She slowly paced over to the man in black, her lips curling upward as she coldly issued an order:
"Kill her."
In an instant, my blood turned to ice.
The man in black drew his dagger, the cold steel flashing in the air.
Despair overwhelmed me in an instant—everything around me seemed to fade away, my mind buzzing with nothing but the deafening silence.
"Take her and get rid of her." Elena waved her hand dismissively, her face void of pity.
The men in black dragged me toward the back of the warehouse. My body was too weak to resist, too fragile to fight back.
Daniel sobbed in my arms, crying out pitifully, "Mommy, don't go..."
I clenched my teeth, holding him tightly, trembling.
Is this how it ends?
I don't want to die.
But then, the wind around me stilled.
At that moment, a low, dangerous growl pierced the air, accompanied by a surge of murderous intent.
He was awake.
Then, I heard a low, furious roar.
"Get out of—!!!"
My heart jolted.
In the next second, blood splattered, and screams erupted.
A tall figure surged out of the darkness, moving with gale-force speed, his blood-red pupils burning with a bloodthirsty fury in the night.
It was him!
He had awakened!
