Chapter 154 - 152: Great Wasteland Starfall

Chapter 154 - 152: Great Wasteland Starfall

Westheid was not an indecisive man. After a brief moment of thought and internal conflict, he made the most logical decision.

Since Mivana was determined to sacrifice herself, he had to return immediately to deal with the Chaos Demon Army’s surprise attack.

And so, without a backward glance, Westheid ran at full speed toward the edge of the Purity Forest.

"Oh? So that’s your plan?"

Seeing this, the Devourer understood the situation and said with sudden realization,

"Tsk, tsk... You’re far more decisive than the other mortals I’ve toyed with. But no matter. To be able to unleash the Primordial Herald, even her death is worth it!"

"But I cannot die yet. This body still has its uses."

The Dirt World Desolate God glanced at the Wolf-eared Maiden, whose aura was growing more terrifying as the last vestiges of clarity faded from her eyes. It then ran even faster than Westheid, leaving countless Chaos Demons behind to obstruct Mivana.

BOOM—

Having fully embraced the forbidden curse, the Beast-eared Maiden instantly tore apart the Demons that lunged at her. Every step she took seemed to send tremors through the earth, powerful enough to shatter it. She slaughtered every Demon in her sight, chasing after the retreating figure of the Desolate God.

...

Westheid encountered no Chaos Demons blocking his path. The Devourer had indeed concentrated all its forces, leaving no Demons wandering about.

After covering an unknown distance, Westheid finally met up with Yolanda and the Qinghui Legion she was leading.

"Brother?!"

The platinum-blonde girl was shocked to see Westheid charging out like a man possessed. "What happened? Where’s Miss Mivana?"

"Abort the campaign! Return for reinforcements immediately!"

Westheid gave the order directly, offering no further explanation.

"A Demon Tide has bypassed our defensive lines! All units, move to intercept the scattered Demons!"

With Mivana on a rampage inside the Purity Forest, the front line had ironically become the safest place to be.

’Chaos Demons... bypassed our lines?’

Yolanda was stunned for a long moment, unable to reconcile those two concepts.

But Westheid’s command was absolute. There was no need to think it over. After confirming the Patriarch’s order, she immediately carried it out.

The frontline forces, which had been concentrating their advance, immediately turned back to provide aid, and just as ordered, they did indeed encounter scattered Demon Beasts.

The Devourer had not been lying. It was incredibly difficult for Chaos Creatures to lie. If the Devourer had truly been tainted by the "poison of Order" to that extent, it would be hard to say whether it was a Chaos Creature or one of the Order Creatures.

Because they had been pushing straight toward the Purity Forest, the Qinghui Legion’s defensive line had a serious flaw. According to conventional wisdom, one didn’t need to worry about being flanked from the rear when fighting Chaos Demons, but they had clearly encountered a rare exception.

"Brother, the defenders at the Ying River are requesting aid! The bulk of the Chaos Demon Tide is heading their way!"

Yolanda said anxiously, "There are very few troops stationed at the Ying River! They’ve already deployed the Floating Battleships, but they can’t hold out for long!"

"I know."

Westheid’s eyes lowered slightly as he spoke in a low, heavy voice.

"Tell them to hold on. I’ll... be there soon."

...

On the banks of the Ying River, the original town had long since expanded due to the massive influx of residents, becoming the main base of operations supporting the army’s campaign to reclaim the Qinghui Territory. But even though it was a rear base, it was fully equipped with sturdy Barriers and watchtowers.

So when the tide of Chaos Demons suddenly appeared and charged the base at the Ying River, the sparsely defended garrison didn’t collapse at the first touch. Instead, they managed to hold on, thanks to their high walls and Barriers.

"Demons... how did they get here? Did they bypass the frontline positions? How is that possible?"

Roy stared at the scene before him in disbelief.

There were Chaos Eggs, as disorganized as a swarm of ants but so numerous it made one’s skin crawl; Fallen Beasts clad in thick carapaces; and, most oppressively, a Demon the size of a hill... An endless stream of Demons poured out of the forest.

There was no time for Roy to stand there shocked. As the current commanding officer of the Ying River garrison, he made the most critical decision he could.

"The Floating Battleships! Get the Floating Battleships in here to help!"

The docked Floating Battleships immediately took off. A [Blazing Flame]-class Floating Battleship might only be a destroyer, the lowest rank in the Celestial Vault Kingdom’s order of battle, but it was a genuine Floating Battleship nonetheless.

And as a vessel of the high heavens, it held absolute suppressive power over Chaos.

VMMMM—

The Floating Battleship immediately crossed the river, aiming all its weapon systems at the Chaos Demon Tide.

Its Secret Magic Sail finished charging in the sunlight, then unleashed a sky-full of cannon fire upon the blackish-brown tide of Demons.

Magic Power refracted through the Secret Magic Sail as if through a prism, firing out searing beams of light that left nothing but decay in their wake.

Meanwhile, the mounted turrets on its port and starboard sides unloaded their ammunition without restraint. The Casters aboard wished they could wring out every last drop of their Magic Power for the bombardment.

Every Floating Battleship was a mobile super-weapon platform. Prism lasers and magical bombardments rained down, sowing the seeds of death.

But even with the Floating Battleships’ ferocious firepower, they still couldn’t halt the Chaos Army’s advance.

Then, a Mad Beast Vanguard resembling a savage bull charged through the endless bombardment of Magic-guided Cannons and Magic, reached the fortress wall, and slammed its massive body against it. The wall, fortified with Runes, finally gave way and a section of it collapsed.

As if drawn by the scent of blood, the tide-like Chaos Army swarmed toward the breach, clambering over the rubble like ants.

"Damn it! The wall is breached! Go plug the hole!"

Roy yelled, and the civil official even grabbed a gun himself and ran to the front lines.

The Chaos Demon Tide’s attack had been too sudden; there was no time to evacuate. Once the outer defenses were broken, what awaited them would be an outright slaughter!

Less than one in ten of the Purity People had survived the initial Chaos Tide. These remaining few hundred thousand were the last embers of their race. If the defense was broken here, the Purity People would truly face total annihilation.

So Roy was truly desperate. He sprinted straight for the breach, screaming, "Forget repairing the Defense Technique! Plug it with our bodies! Have the Floating Battleships fire directly on the breach!"

"And the Knights who just received their Magic Tomes! Whether they’ve succeeded or not, get them up here! If the first line falls and we all die, then they will hold the second line until reinforcements arrive!"

"You idiot! I’m not telling them to defend! I’m telling them to die! To die for the survival of Qinghui!"

The once-refined civil official’s eyes were bloodshot, his mouth spewing vulgarities. Shouting until his voice was hoarse, he had somehow become the backbone of the chaotic battlefield.

And so, the few remaining Warriors on the banks of the Ying River threw themselves toward the breach, one after another, to plug the hole. But they were far inferior to the forces of Chaos in both numbers and speed. Even though the Warriors were valiant and unafraid of death, they could only watch helplessly as the swiftest Demons beat them to it.

Just as the Chaos Legion was about to seize the breach, no one noticed a great star streaking across the gloomy sky.

A figure wreathed in True Red Flame, trailing a crimson streak like a star falling to earth, tore through the clouds and the atmosphere with an aura that could annihilate anything. It hurtled down from the heavens toward the collapsed section of the wall where the giant beast stood.

BOOM—

Dazzling embers exploded in a gale of fire. The Chaos Demon that resembled a savage bull was struck dead-on. In the ultimate flame, its flesh and blood body melted into nothing. The wall, the Chaos, the earth, the air—everything nearby was engulfed in a surging wave of scorching heat.

The ground trembled, cracking open. The still-standing sections of the wall teetered on the verge of collapse before crumbling completely moments later. A small mushroom cloud slowly formed and rose from the fissure.

Little by little, following the crimson ash, the mists summoned by the Magic Power of Chaos began to slowly dissipate due to the power of Pure Dragon Thunder. As lightning descended from the clouds, it formed pillars of golden-blue light that shot toward the ground.

CRUNCH—

A foot clad in an iron boot stepped onto the parched earth, which had been baked dry by the intense heat, making a crisp sound.

The godsend, wreathed in embers and lightning, walked out of the massive crater their landing had created. A blood-red radiance flowed through the grooves of their Shadow Fire Armor, emitting a scorching brilliance.
