Chapter 311: The Ritual Begins, the Dead Arrive
Chapter 311: The Ritual Begins, the Dead Arrive
Time quickly reached the hour of the Tiger, three o'clock in the morning. This was the moment when Yin and Yang intersected, the time when the ghostly aura between heaven and earth was at its thickest!
The surrounding people stood on the mountain. Even though it was fully illuminated by lights, they could still feel that terrifying Yin energy swirling and spreading around them!
But Kurahashi Seiji, standing upon the Altar, had already slowly opened his eyes. "Let the Ritual begin!" he whispered.
He unfastened his sword and sliced open his palm. Blood dripped into the ancient porcelain bowl before him, mixing with the clear water and instantly dyeing it a deep red.
He then touched the tip of his sword to the water. All the liquid was absorbed by the blade, rippling as he flicked his wrist!
With this blood-red water, he drew three concentric circles upon the Altar. Outside the circles, he inscribed the Twenty-Eight Mansions, while in the center, he wrote the characters for "Divine Decree" and marked it with the symbol of the Seven Stars!
This was the Soul-Suppressing Seal of Taishan Fujun!
Kurahashi Seiji waved his hand, opening the Book of the Golden Crow and Jade Rabbit he held, and declared loudly, "Light the lamps!"
Standing to the side, Shiratori Hayato quickly directed the people to light seven whale oil lamps around the Onmyoji.
The seven lamps were arranged in the shape of the Big Dipper. The moment they were ignited, the restless hearts of many in the crowd miraculously calmed down!Strangely enough, the mountain that had been battered by strong winds was now completely still. The flames of these fish oil lamps flickered with a red glow, but as Kurahashi Seiji waved his fingers, they transformed into dancing blue flames!
The blue light gathered in the surroundings, painting the bamboo forest in an eerie, cyan glow.
Then, Kurahashi Seiji took out the Shrine and poured out the Sessho-seki, placing it at the center of the Altar. "Senior Yuzamozen, I leave it to you," he murmured.
A charming, seductive voice echoed in his ear. "I shall go. Just make sure you do not forget your promise!"
An almost unparalleled surge of resentment boiled over the surface of the stone, blanketing the entire area like a black mist. Yet, under the radiance of the seven-star lamps, it was firmly locked in place, unable to escape!
Only then did Kurahashi Seiji unfurl his Painted Fan. Its surface bore the Divine Talisman of Taishan Fujun, which he had spent an enormous amount of mental energy drawing over the past two days. Words from ancient tomes rang out as he chanted:
"From the Underworld to the Azure Sky, the Lord of Mount Tai dictates fate!
Using my soul as the guide, and the Resentment Stone as the Sacrifice—
Pray open the path to the Netherworld, and suppress the wicked cruelty of this realm!"
Having finished chanting the ancient incantation, he tore the wound on his palm open once more. Fresh blood soaked the Sessho-seki, forging a connection between the Painted Fan and the stone!
In the next second, a terrifying, bloodcurdling shriek erupted from within the Sessho-seki. "Ah!"
The fierce winds that had previously ceased howled violently once again. The bamboo forest thrashed about like a horde of dancing ghosts, and the flames of the seven-star lamps within the array instantly surged, blazing over seven feet high!
The phantom shadows of will-o'-the-wisps on the ground projected a massive illusion of a ghost-faced judge. It encircled the Sessho-seki and completely enveloped the surrounding ghostly aura!
The black mist was firmly locked down. The giant ghost face expanded once more, merging with the resentment in the air to form a massive phantom net that stretched outward!
Following the shrieks, dim patterns and fractured cracks appeared on the surface of the Sessho-seki.
Kurahashi Seiji waved his Painted Fan, struck his own chest, and violently spat out a mouthful of blood—this was his heart's essence, drawn out through a secret technique—directing it onto the Painted Fan. "With the blood of Abe no Seimei as the pact, seal the evil for a thousand miles!"
On the Painted Fan, the blood melted into the divine talisman. In an instant, the talisman detached from the surface of the fan, transforming into crimson-gold chains that plunged deep into the earth!
The others did not react, but through Kurahashi Seiji's transcendent vision, he could see those golden patterns steadily spreading outward within a three-mile radius!
This was the Leyline Suppression Art. By channeling this special power, it could alleviate the surrounding ghostly aura!
Kurahashi Seiji slowly stood up straight and muttered, "It is finished..."
Everyone around breathed a sigh of relief. They could now clearly feel the emergence of this power, and they could also sense that the peculiar, oppressive atmosphere in the surroundings had completely dissipated!
Shiratori Hayato walked right up. "Master Seiji, it is finally over..."
However, he failed to notice that the black mist clinging to Kurahashi Seiji had become so dense it was impenetrable. The Onmyoji was completely curled up within the mist. In the span of a single breath, the mist violently condensed and burrowed into his arm!
"Ugh!" The young Onmyoji violently vomited blood. He fell to his knees, staring at his left arm, where a black visage of resentment had almost materialized into solid form!
And even to the naked eye, a visible weakening of his aura could be seen!
"Master, are you alright?" Shiratori Hayato hurried forward to ask, supporting the coughing and bleeding Kurahashi Seiji. "I am fine. It is just the backlash of the resentment!" Kurahashi Seiji waved a dismissive hand. "I am but a humble Onmyoji. How could I host such a grand Ritual without suffering any consequences?"
He could feel that this was the backlash from those ghosts. This Ritual had formed a hidden barrier around the entirety of Kyoto City. Naturally, it could not completely block the ghosts, but it was perfectly capable of weakening their power and deterring them from approaching easily!
After resting for a while and confirming that his strength had recovered significantly, Kurahashi Seiji managed the rare feat of standing up on his own. He returned to the Altar, picked up the Shrine, and pulled the Sessho-seki back in front of him.
That charming yet slightly weakened voice echoed in Kurahashi Seiji's ear once again. "Boy, remember your words. If you break your promise, I will definitely make you pay!"
"I will remember!" Kurahashi Seiji whispered back. "Besides, Senior, I am not truly just making you suffer!"
He twisted the hand seal he was holding, and the powerful resentment violently surged at this moment. The surrounding gale grew even fiercer—a manifestation of the resentment regenerating!
"Swift!" Kurahashi Seiji snapped open his Painted Fan and pointed at the Sessho-seki. The ambient resentment seemed to find a release valve, all of it rushing toward the Sessho-seki!
Only then did the weakened voice slowly calm down. "At least you have a bit of a conscience..."
She spoke no more, focusing entirely on absorbing the resentment.
Even though she was the nine-tailed fox, bearing the power of Taishan Fujun was still a bit too much for her, which was why she had sustained such severe injuries.
However, Kurahashi Seiji was not a petty man. He had no intention to discard the millstone after the donkey was used, choosing instead to offer her the resentment as compensation.
Kurahashi Seiji's reasoning was very simple. Resentment could not be dissipated. According to Abe no Seimei, this was a power drawn out by Deceased People and Ghosts, meaning it could only be absorbed by a Ghost.
Rather than letting other ghosts benefit from it, he might as well give it to Yuzamozen. At the very least, she could be reasoned with.
Moreover, absorbing this resentment would inversely affect the formation of those Ghosts and Monsters, slowing down their mutation process.
This way, even when the Hundred Demon Night Parade commenced, it would not be overwhelmingly severe!
Having finished all of this, Kurahashi Seiji finally sat down on a chair brought over by someone else, gazing at the resentment soaring into the sky over the Kyoto City region!
This was Kyoto City, the millennium-old capital of Japan, and the birthplace of countless grudges and Wars. Here, countless Monsters and legends had once unleashed their power, and countless Transcendent Beings had displayed their abilities.
"I am the only one this place can rely on now, Ancestor! Were you this lonely back in your day too?" Kurahashi Seiji murmured softly.
The Soul Bell in his robes chimed without any wind—that was the prelude to the Hundred Demon Night Parade, as well as the overture to the Onmyoji suppressing the souls all on his own.
The spectators surrounding him remained silent, but they held a profound reverence for him.
...
"Crown, you are a genius!" Alvin exclaimed. "You used Wish Power to simulate resentment in this world, successfully adjusting the power system! Most importantly, the world acknowledged this system, validating your entire design!"
He spoke with sheer awe, his words brimming with emotional praise for Bai Yang's creation!
"Of course, that was the idea from the start! Wish Power is omnipresent, Wish Power is omnipotent!" Bai Yang declared. "The Faithful of Ghosts and Monsters see resentment, The Faithful of Deities see Divine Faith, and cultivators see spiritual energy. They are all fundamentally the exact same thing!"
"Our test was a huge success! Next up, it is time for the ancient contestants to enter the stage!" Bai Yang said with a beaming smile. "Only this group of ancient contestants can allow ordinary people to come into contact with true foundational Transcendent Power!"
"A mass emergence of the supernatural is upon us right now!"
He waved his hand. In the areas surrounding this city, the grounds where the Corpses of ancient people were buried, those tombs—whether already discovered or yet to be unearthed—were opened one by one. The previously blurred memories of those people slowly became clear.
The revival of the dead was about to add something even more spectacular to this land!
