Chapter 481: The Call That Never Came
Chapter 481: The Call That Never Came
As July drew to a close,
the summer in Stanton City quietly slipped away, leaving traces of early autumn.
The evening weather became increasingly cool, and even with the evening glow hanging in the sky, there was still a chill in the breeze.
Nora Northwood and Jasper Sinclair had completely cut off contact with each other, it had been half a month since they last spoke.
That deafening snub had truly distanced them.
Saturday.
Jasper Sinclair returned alone to The Sinclair Residence for an appointment, and Grandma Sinclair couldn’t help but nag a bit upon not seeing the person she had been thinking about: "It’s normal for couples to have their ups and downs. Nora is seven or eight years younger than you, when things happen, you need to give in to her!"
Jasper let it go in one ear and out the other. Had he not already been indulging Nora enough? But what had he got in return?
Closed doors, divorce papers, deliberate avoidance... When had he ever been treated like this?
With time, his temperament had mellowed quite a bit, so he decided to cool off for now and wait until they could calmly sit together to talk about other matters.
Jasper didn’t understand emotions; he didn’t realize that his thoughts and actions were only pushing her further away.
That evening, the two of them discussed matters regarding Peach Bell in the study.
"Have you investigated where Peach’s biological parents are?"
The study door wasn’t fully closed; it was ajar.
Peach was passing by and coincidentally heard her name, so she pressed her ear to the door to listen more closely.
Her ponytail swayed; she didn’t realize this behavior was called eavesdropping, she just purely wanted to understand whether her beloved Sinclair was planning to send her away again.
Upon hearing the end, she was disheartened, her crescent-moon eyes filled with tears as she looked pitiable.
It turned out, the whole house had never considered her as real family... inevitably, she recalled Liam Jacobs’s words.
That sentence, "I know where your family is," began to stir her heart.
Was she always going to be living under someone else’s roof?
Peach returned to her room and started looking for the number on a small note, eventually finding it in a corner of her wardrobe.
She exhaled with relief, and headed straight to the phone on the first floor, ready to dial the number Liam Jacobs had left for her.
"Beep... The number you are dialing is currently busy..." The first time, no one answered.
Peach thought Liam was deceiving her, and cursed him several times in her heart, still like a little child.
A dozen or so minutes later, the butler found her in her room, stating, "Someone said they’re looking for Miss Peach Bell, waiting downstairs for you to take the call."
Peach guessed it was Liam, and immediately leapt off her bed.
She ran downstairs, and the butler’s gaze landed on the bandage on her thigh, hurriedly instructing, "Miss, please slow down, no one is going to snatch the phone."
The butler was only worried about her safety, having forgotten to consider who could be calling!
The first floor.
With her hand half-covering her mouth, Peach spoke mischievously, "I thought you were a swindler!"
"I’m your real brother, how could I cheat you?"
"I have a brother, it’s Sinclair." The young girl retorted, as if she only acknowledged Jasper Sinclair her whole life.
The person on the other end of the phone was quite hostile, wondering why everyone he liked preferred to circle around Jasper Sinclair?
What made that man better than him!
Liam Jacobs suppressed his dissatisfaction, chose not to argue for now, and said, "Listen, it’s not safe to call with this number, find a way to get a private phone and then call me back."
