Chapter 454 Li Hong Burned to Death!

Chapter 454 Li Hong Burned to Death!

"Xiao Zhang, what’s the matter?" Ding Wan’er pressed the speakerphone button and then asked her secretary Zhang Yu, curious about what could be happening so early in the morning.

"Dean Ding, two police officers have come to see you about some matters," Zhang Yu quickly replied to Ding Wan’er’s question. She was even more puzzled about what could have happened for police to be searching for Ding Wan’er so early. Could something have happened?

"Let them in and bring two cups of tea," Ding Wan’er said before hanging up the phone, feeling very strange, wondering why the police were seeking her out and what unfortunate incident could have occurred.

"Hello, Dean Ding, we are criminal investigators from Tianhai City Bureau. We’re here to discuss some details with you."

"Hello, how may I assist you? What would you like to know?"

"We’d like to verify something. Does your school employ a German teacher named Li Hong?"

"Yes, she is a woman who has just been appointed to our school, having been with us for only two or three days. What’s the problem? Is there an issue with her?"

"This individual perished in a fire last night in an apartment on Pingtang Road, along with a man. Therefore, we’d like to learn about her life."

"Certainly, I’ll have someone lead you there. Xiao Zhang, guide these two officers to the language institute," she said.

...

As soon as the two officers entered, they made their intention clear, which was essentially to go through the motions and briefly explain the situation. However, given that it was a teacher from the school who had died, they needed to show up and conduct at least a semblance of an investigation.

The crime scene initially left all the police officers clueless. After examining the files of the two deceased, the team leader realized that both individuals were quite clean, with no one else in the picture. Thus, they labeled the incident as a common gas fire explosion to avoid complications and potential issues.

After hearing what the two officers said, Ding Wan’er understood what had happened. Li Hong had died in a fire the previous night, which shocked her. Wasn’t she with Lin Feng last night? How could she have died?

With this thought, she hastily followed up on the officers’ words, arranging for Xiao Zhang to take them to the language institute for investigation.

Once the officers had left the office, Ding Wan’er quickly dialed Lin Feng’s number. Hearing from the police that Li Hong had died in a fire with a man, although she did not believe Lin Feng was involved, she was still anxious and hoped that he had no connection to the incident.

"Lin Feng, the police just came by to say that the newly appointed German teacher, Li Hong, has died. You’re not involved, are you?" Ding Wan’er asked with concern after calling Lin Feng, especially worried after the message from last night. It wasn’t that she feared for Lin Feng himself; she was more afraid he might be in trouble.

"How could I be involved? I went to help Li Hong fix her computer after finishing the test papers last night, and then I left. The surveillance in the dormitory should explain everything," Lin Feng answered casually, although he found it odd that Ding Wan’er was aware he had been with Li Hong the previous night.

"Oh, as long as you’re alright, that’s good. The police mentioned Li Hong and a man were burned to death, and I just wanted to check with you. Since that’s the case, it’s good news. Let Sister Leng know, and Zhang Yu has already gone with the two officers," Ding Wan’er said, completely relieved after hearing Lin Feng’s calm explanation. As long as Lin Feng was uninvolved, nothing else mattered.

Now, all Ding Wan’er cared for was Lin Feng’s safety; everything else seemed inconsequential, so she was relieved to hear he might not be implicated.

"All right, I’ll inform them. You go back to work," Lin Feng said before hanging up and conveying Ding Wan’er’s words around the office, signaling everyone to brace themselves and not to panic when the officers arrived.

"Dean Ding just called to say that the new German teacher, Li Hong, and a man have burned to death. Secretary Zhang Yu is leading the police to our institute for an investigation," Lin Feng said before leaving the French department’s office to notify Leng Mei.

What... what?

Li Hong is dead?

She died just after being appointed?

...

The teachers in the office, hearing from Lin Feng that Li Hong had burned to death, couldn’t believe it was true. Everyone felt it was very strange; how could such a young and beautiful woman like Li Hong just die like that, especially with a man? That was impossible! But when they heard that the police had already arrived, everyone calmed down and continued with their work, as if they hadn’t heard the news.

Lin Feng turned and entered Leng Mei’s office, promptly relaying Ding Wan’er’s message.

"What! Li Hong is dead, and she burned to death with a man? How... how is that possible, didn’t she apply for a dorm room?" Leng Mei was utterly shocked upon hearing this news. Who could have thought that the new German teacher would burn to death in just two days? This... this is too ominous.

"I’m leaving now. Zhang Yu will be coming with the police soon," Lin Feng said as he conveyed the message and then turned to leave Leng Mei’s office.

"Okay," Leng Mei responded absently to Lin Feng’s words while her mind began to work at full capacity, pondering how to deal with the police if they came...

Having received Leng Mei’s affirmative response, Lin Feng didn’t hesitate to leave and go back to his department to prepare for his lessons, leaving Leng Mei alone to ponder the situation.

...

"Dean Leng, these are two police officers here to investigate Li Hong’s death. Dean Ding asked me to bring them here," Zhang Yu said, leading two officers straight into Leng Mei’s office. She saw Leng Mei by the window lost in thought and directly called out to wake her.

"Zhang Yu, you can go back now," Leng Mei snapped out of it and saw Zhang Yu had already brought the officers inside. So, she asked Zhang Yu to go back to Ding Wan’er.

"Dean Leng, goodbye," Zhang Yu said and immediately left the office, leaving the two police officers with Leng Mei.

"Dean Leng, we are here to investigate Li Hong’s death and hope for your cooperation."

"We’re just doing our job, and hope you don’t feel too concerned," the two police officers added, noticing Leng Mei’s icy demeanor. Unfamiliar with her, they thought she was angry and thus quickly explained, hoping to handle the matter peacefully with her.

"What was the cause of Li Hong’s death?" Leng Mei really wanted to hear the officers clarify the cause of Li Hong’s death.

"From what we’ve seen at the scene, it appears to be an accident. A gas pipeline leak, followed by ignition, led to an explosion. It’s that simple."

"You don’t need to feel too pressured, Dean Leng. We are just here to get a basic understanding of the situation; there’s no hidden agenda."

The officers hastened to reply to Leng Mei’s question, as they were there just for a formality and didn’t want any unpleasantness with her.

"So, what would you officers like to know?" Leng Mei asked, eager to cooperate once she knew what they wanted.

"We’d like to take a look at her dormitory, have a brief chat with her colleagues, and then retrieve the surveillance footage to take back to the station," the police officers replied directly to Leng Mei’s inquiry, eager to finish their task and return as soon as possible. Considering the case had already been classified as an accident, they did not wish to encounter any difficulties and only aimed to complete the process.

"Please," Leng Mei led the two officers outside, and soon they reached Li Hong’s dormitory. With the help of the dormitory supervisor, they opened the room for the officers to tour.

The officers looked around casually for a bit, took Li Hong’s laptop, and went out. Then with Leng Mei’s help, they took the surveillance footage and relevant information from the dormitory, and having accomplished this, the officers asked Leng Mei a few inconsequential questions before bidding farewell and leaving.

Seeing the officers promptly taking leave, Leng Mei returned to her office to work. Judging by the officers’ conduct, their so-called investigation was nothing more than a formality. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have been so lax. If it was just for show, that implied Li Hong’s death was conclusively settled, and even the police did not wish to delve further.

With this thought in mind, Leng Mei regained her composure and continued working.

However, a question lingered in Leng Mei’s mind: since her arrival, Li Hong seemed to have deliberately gotten close to Lin Feng. At first, Leng Mei was suspicious that Li Hong might have had some special agenda with Lin Feng, but in just two days, she met a mysterious fiery death. The situation was indeed very wrong...

...

As the sun set, the day’s work came to an end. Lin Feng had no particular matters to attend to, so as usual, he gave Ding Wan’er a ride home.

Sitting in Lin Feng’s car, Ding Wan’er looked at him driving and felt truly blissful. To have met a man like Lin Feng and to become his woman were things she took great pride in.

Thinking about everything that had happened up until now, Ding Wan’er sometimes felt as if she was in a dream. Lin Feng had gradually revealed his incredible abilities, but that didn’t matter. The important thing was that she was Lin Feng’s fiancée, his woman, and that outcome was what Ding Wan’er cared about most.
