Entangled With My Rival CEO

Chapter 114

Chapter 114

At the hospital, the sterile white walls and the incessant beeping of machines created an ambiance of tension and uncertainty.

Camilla sat by the hospital bed, her eyes fixed on Alexander's motionless form.

The rhythmic rise and fall of his chest, aided by the oxygen mask, brought a wave of relief washing over her, but it was quickly followed by a surge of fear that threatened to overwhelm her.

What if the situation had been worse?...What if he had died in that fire?... The thought gnawed at her, tormenting her with its possibilities.

She couldn't help but question herself inwardly, wondering if she had let her anger and frustration get the better of her.

The bitter fights over their divorce, the blame he had placed on her for the loss of their child - it all felt so insignificant in the face of this near tragedy.

Her hand trembled as she reached out, her fingertips barely grazing his forehead.

Gently, she brushed away the stray streaks of hair that fell across his face, her touch infused with a mixture of love and regret.

The silence was broken by a sudden noise from outside the hospital ward, drawing her attention away from Alexander's still figure.

She looked up at the door, catching a fleeting glimpse of Edward before he turned away and disappeared.

A pang of guilt gripped her heart as she remembered her actions during the fire outbreak as well as everything that had transpired from the morning of that day.

The weight of her choices, the consequences of her impulsive decisions, bore down upon her slender shoulders, threatening to consume her.

Summoning her resolve, Camilla took a deep breath, gathering the remnants of her shattered composure.

She stood up from the bed and with measured steps, she exited the hospital ward, her eyes scanning the deserted hallway.

And there, just within reach, she saw Edward's retreating back. "Edward..." she called out, her voice reverberating through the sterile surroundings.

For a fleeting moment, the world seems to stand still, as if holding its breath, awaiting Edward's response.

He paused, his footsteps faltering, before slowly turning to face her.

There was a somberness in his expression, mirrored in Camilla's eyes as she met his gaze.

Her voice was filled with sincerity, a desperate plea for understanding. "Can we talk?" she asked, her words hanging in the air. "Please..." She added.

Silence hung heavy in the air as Edward's eyes searched her face, grappling with his own tumultuous emotions.

A sigh escaped his lips, laden with unspoken words and unresolved pain.

Finally, he nodded in agreement, signaling that he was willing to talk.

Camilla approached him cautiously, her footsteps echoing in the quiet hallway.

They found a secluded spot in the corridor, away from the hustle and bustle of the hospital.

Taking their seats on a pair of cold, metal chairs, the tension between them remained palpable.

With a heavy sigh Camilla began, "I'm sorry..." Her words were soft, hesitant, and laced with shame and sadness. "...for what happened this morning."

"I..." A lump formed in her throat, choking off her next sentence. "I know what happened this morning...what you saw... Alexander and me." She trailed off only to continue a few seconds later.

".... really hurt you and I really wish I had handled the whole situation better...I know what heartbreak feels like and I just wish I hadn't led you on only to leave you heartbroken."

"I really wish there was something more deeper to say for you to understand how remorseful and sorry I am." She added.

Edward gazed down at his hands as he replied, "You don't need to apologize Camilla...You didn't break my heart...I did the deed myself." He continued, his voice heavy with regret and self-blame.

"I made a foolish mistake, thinking that a woman who had recently ended her marriage in just a year would quickly develop deep feelings for me."

Camilla's eyes glistened with unshed tears as Edward's words hung in the air. She felt the weight of his self-blame, and she wished she could take it all away.

Camilla responded with genuine empathy, "Edward, I...I genuinely care about you. I..." She attempted to continue, but he interrupted her.

"It's not just about you caring for me, Camilla..." His voice rose slightly, filled with desperation as he gazed at her, tears shimmering in his own eyes.

"I wanted to feel like you truly loved me," the words rushed out, his voice quivering with emotion.

After a few more moments of locking eyes with her, he couldn't hold back any longer, breaking down as his feelings overwhelmed him.

He wept quietly, and Camilla watched him, feeling a deep sense of hurt that he had been pushed to the point of breaking down in front of her, all because of her.

Approaching Edward, she enveloped him in her arms, providing the comfort he so desperately sought.

His shoulders quivered with the weight of his emotions, but she held him firmly, softly whispering words of solace.

"I'm so sorry, Edward," she murmured, struggling to keep her own emotions in check, which crept into her voice.

"I never intended to hurt you like this. I should have been more truthful with you right from the start."

Edward clung to her, his tears dampening her shoulder, but she didn't pull away.

Instead, she held him, as if trying to shield him from the pain, guilt, and heartache that had built up between them.

As time passed and Edward's sobs gradually faded, he lifted his tear-stained face to meet Camilla's gaze, his eyes red and swollen.

"I love you, Camilla," he confessed, his voice filled with vulnerability.

Camilla locked eyes with him, her own gaze shimmering with emotion.

"I'm sorry... I can't say the same to you," she admitted, her words heavy with regret.

He sniffled and wiped away his tears with the back of his hand, nodding slowly. "I understand..."

"Actually, I knew you didn't feel anything for me right from the start." Edward's words hung in the air as he stared at Camilla, who furrowed her brows in confusion as she looked back at him.

"What do you mean?" She asked hesitantly.

Edward looked down, his voice growing softer as he spoke. "The first time we met in the elevator... when we got trapped together..."

"When you got triggered by the darkness... You called me by his name, and even though I thought it was strange, I remembered that pretending to be him seemed to calm you down more effectively than when I tried to make you understand that you were with me and safe."

"I always had this feeling deep down that somehow, even if you didn't talk about it or admit it, you still had some feelings for your ex-husband."

"But, being the fool who just wanted his high school dream to come true, I buried those thoughts deep inside to live in the fabricated fantasy that our relationship wasn't one-sided."

Camilla listened in stunned silence as Edward revealed his thoughts and feelings.

Her mind flashed back to that elevator incident, the moment when her fear had overwhelmed her.

She had never realized she had addressed him as Alexander due to her fear, and he had never spoken about it.

"I...I... don't know what else to say except I'm..." Before she could finish her sentence, Edward preempted her.

"...sorry?... Don't be," he said with a melancholic smile on his face.

After a moment, he stood up abruptly. "I should get going. Today has been a rollercoaster of emotions for me, and I need some rest," he said, taking a step as if to leave, but Camilla's hand grabbed his wrist.

He turned back to look at her, also standing up. His gaze wandered from her beautiful face down to his wrist, which was still encircled in her hand, but just then, she let go.

She stretched out her other hand, which had been balled into a fist by her side a few seconds ago, now opened with an engagement ring resting in her palm.

"Please take this..." But all Edward did was stare at the engagement ring resting in Camilla's open palm.

Though it wasn't exceptionally expensive, he had given it to her on the evening of the day she proposed to him as a token of his love.

His eyes flitted across her face, and it dawned upon her that he would not accept it back. But still, she pressed on.

"Please... take it... I can't hold on to it knowing I can never give you what you want."

Camilla's voice trembled with emotion as she continued, "You're an amazing person, Edward, and you deserve someone who would truly love you, not someone like me who is still entangled in love with someone who was meant to be my rival."

Edward stared at the engagement ring resting in Camilla's open palm. It was a beautiful emerald ring with two simple, diamond-studded garnet stones set in a circular setting.

For a moment, it felt as though the world had frozen around them, encapsulating this poignant moment of realization and acceptance.

Edward finally took a deep breath, his gaze returning to Camilla's tear-filled eyes.

He reached out and gently took the ring in his hand, turning it over as if to inspect its delicate craftsmanship.

Camilla watched him, her heart pounding as she waited for his response.

Finally, Edward looked up at her, his eyes meeting hers. They held a mixture of emotions; gratitude, sorrow, and a deep understanding of the complexities of their situation.

With a soft, heartfelt smile, he said, "Maybe if I had been more outspoken and confessed my feelings a lot sooner... maybe things would have been different between us..."

"Maybe..." Camilla gave a rueful chuckle and watched as he squeezed the engagement ring in his hand, giving a slight nod.

"I guess I'll see you around then... take care." He said, turning around and walking down the corridor.

Camilla watched his retreating figure, a mixture of emotions swirling within her. Relief, sadness, and a sense of closure all washed over her.

As Edward reached the hospital's exit and got into his car, he took a moment to gather himself.

His emotions were still raw from the conversation with Camilla.

He started the car, and turned on the radio which began playing a soulful song titled "Only Love Can Hurt Like This" by Paloma Faith.

The melancholic lyrics seemed to resonate with Edward, echoing the bittersweet feelings he carried with him.

He allowed the music to wash over him as he drove into the night, the haunting melody providing a soundtrack to his thoughts and emotions.

Edward knew that healing would take time, but this moment marked a step toward closure and a chance to move forward.
