Double Trouble, Triple Heat

Chapter 30

Chapter 30

Spring arrives in Silverpine Falls.

The snow melts from the mountains, replaced by wildflowers that carpet the meadows in purple and gold. The forest comes alive with birdsong and running water. After the longest winter of my life—filled with blood and fire and impossible transformation—the warmth feels like a promise.

The twins are three months old now, crawling everywhere, shifting at unpredictable intervals. This morning alone, Aurora turned into a copper-furred pup twice during breakfast, and Elias somehow managed to get stuck under the couch in wolf form. Keeping up with them is exhausting.

I've never been happier.

The pack is thriving. New wolves have arrived—refugees from packs that heard about what we're building here. A leadership that shares power. A Prime who heals. Children who represent something unprecedented. We've grown by a dozen members in the last month alone.

For one shining moment, the world feels safe.

It doesn't last.

The warning comes at dawn—scouts at the eastern border, reporting a lone wolf approaching. Not attacking. Just... walking toward the territory line with hands raised.

Marcus Blackclaw.

The name hits the pack like a shockwave. I feel it through the bonds—fear, anger, old wounds reopening. Dominic's rage flares hot enough to burn.

"I exiled him," he growls. "He was told never to return."

"He's not crossing the border," the scout reports. "He's waiting. Says he needs to speak with the alphas. All three of them."

All three. Including me.

We go together—Dominic, Caspian, and me, flanked by a dozen pack members. The twins stay behind with Luna and Miriam, protected by the strongest wolves we have.

Marcus waits at the territory's edge, and the sight of him steals my breath.

He's thin—gaunt, really, bones visible beneath skin that's lost its healthy color. Months of exile have carved hollows in his cheeks and shadows under his eyes. The proud challenger who demanded Dominic's position is gone, replaced by something haunted. Something desperate.

"I'm not here to fight," he says before anyone can speak. "I'm here to warn you."

Dominic's growl doesn't soften. "You have thirty seconds."

"Old powers are gathering." Marcus's voice is hoarse, unused. "I've spent months wandering the supernatural underground—places wolves don't usually go. And everywhere I went, I heard your name." His eyes find mine. "The Prime who healed silver wounds. Who birthed hybrid children. Who broke a witch's binding spell with nothing but love and will."

"What of it?"

"They're not just curious anymore." He swallows hard. "They're afraid."

The words hang in the morning air. Behind me, I feel the pack's tension ratchet higher.

"Let them be afraid," I say.

Marcus almost smiles—a ghost of the arrogance he once wore. "You've grown teeth, Prime. Good. You'll need them." He hesitates, then continues. "The Covenant is divided. Some witches want to study you, some want to bind you again, and some want you destroyed before your power grows further. They're calling an assembly—the first in two centuries."

"My children are three months old."

"Your children carry three bloodlines that have never combined. They're something new in a world that fears change." His haunted eyes meet mine. "And it's not just witches. There are wolf packs in the east and south who see your children as abominations. Traditionalists who believe the bloodlines should never have mixed. They're talking alliance with the Covenant's more extreme factions."

Caspian steps forward, silver eyes blazing. "Is this a threat? Because if you're threatening our children—"

"I'm warning you." Marcus holds up his hands. "I have information. Names. Locations. Plans I overheard while pretending to be a broken exile looking for purpose." He pauses. "I'm not here to cause trouble. I'm asking for a conditional return. I'll share everything I know, serve the pack, try to rebuild what I destroyed."

"Why?" Dominic's voice is cold. "Why should we trust you?"

"You shouldn't." Marcus's laugh is bitter. "I challenged you. I allied with hunters. I nearly destroyed everything you've built." He meets Dominic's gaze squarely. "But exile gave me time to think. About what I really wanted. About what pack means." His voice drops. "I was angry because I wasn't alpha. I convinced myself you didn't deserve the position. But out there, alone, I realized—I never wanted to lead. I wanted to belong. And I destroyed my chance at that."

Silence stretches between us. I reach through the bond, feeling Dominic's conflict—the old alpha who demanded exile, warring with the new leader who believes in second chances.

"Provisional return," Dominic finally says. "You'll be watched constantly. Your information will be verified. One betrayal—one hint of treachery—and I finish what I started in that clearing."

Marcus nods acceptance, relief flickering across his gaunt face. "Understood."

Luna steps forward to lead him to quarters, and I don't miss the complicated look that passes between them. History. Resentment. Maybe something else—regret, or memory of who they were before everything shattered.

Another story. Another complication. Another thread in the tapestry we're weaving.

That evening, Eldric arrives at the lodge with his research.

His ancient arms are full of scrolls and books, texts I can't read in languages that predate English. He spreads them across our table, milky eyes troubled.

"The children," he says quietly. "I've been studying everything I can find. Prophecies. Histories. Accounts of hybrid births throughout the ages."

"And?"

"They carry three bloodlines: alpha, Prime, hunter. No one has ever combined those before. Wolf and hunter have mixed—your mother proved that. Prime and alpha have mixed—it's rare, but documented. But all three?" He shakes his head. "They might be the first of something entirely new."

"What does that mean for them?"

"I don't know." The uncertainty in his voice is more frightening than any definitive answer. "But the supernatural world is shifting because of them. Because of you. Old orders are nervous. New alliances are forming. The balance that's held for centuries is tilting."

"Tilting toward what?"

Eldric meets my eyes. "War. Or evolution. Perhaps both." He pauses. "Your children aren't just different, Sera. They're a statement. Proof that the old categories don't hold anymore. That wolves and hunters can create something together instead of destroying each other."

"Some people won't like that statement."

"No." His ancient face is grave. "They won't."

Later, after the scrolls are put away and Eldric has retired to his cabin, I stand on the lodge's porch and watch the sun set over the mountains.

Dominic finds me first, wrapping his arms around me from behind, chin resting on my shoulder. "Heavy thoughts?"

"Heavy everything." I lean into his warmth. "Marcus's return. The Covenant. Whatever the twins are becoming." I sigh. "I thought the hard part was over."

"The hard part is never over." His lips brush my temple. "But neither is the good part."

Caspian joins us moments later, pressing against my side, one arm looping around both of us. "What are we brooding about?"

"The future," I say.

"Ah." He's quiet for a moment, unusual for him. Then: "You know what I think about the future?"

"Tell me."

"I think it's going to be terrifying. And wonderful. And completely unpredictable." He grins, silver eyes catching the fading light. "Which is exactly how I like it."

I laugh despite everything. These men. My men. Making me smile even when the world seems determined to fall apart.

Through the bond, I feel the twins waking from their nap—Aurora's curious spark, Elias's watchful presence. Luna's exasperation as tiny paws start racing across the floor. The pack settling into evening routines around us, a hundred golden threads connecting me to lives I've sworn to protect.

I came to Silverpine Falls broken, running, alone.

I found monsters and magic and impossible love. I found family in the last place I expected. I found myself—a self I didn't know existed, sleeping beneath the surface all along.

The future is uncertain. Witches are watching. Hostile packs are gathering. The Covenant debates whether to destroy my children before they can become whatever they're destined to be. Marcus has returned with warnings of war. The world I've entered is bigger and more dangerous than I ever imagined.

But I'm not afraid.

I'm not the scared girl who arrived in Silverpine Falls six months ago. I'm not the woman who ran from Joseph, who hid from the truth about her parents, who didn't know she had a wolf sleeping inside her.

I'm Sera Blackwood. Mother. Mate. Prime. Wolf.

I've healed the dying. Faced down hunters. Birthed children who might change the supernatural world forever. I've found love that doesn't ask me to choose, built a pack that shares power, turned enemies into allies.

Whatever comes next—the Covenant, the hostile packs, the forces that want to tear us apart—I'll face it.

Not alone. Never alone again.

With Dominic's strength at my back. Caspian's light at my side. My children's futures to protect. My pack surrounding me like a wall of teeth and love.

The last light of day paints the mountains gold and crimson. Somewhere in the forest, a wolf howls—answered by another, then another, voices rising in chorus. My pack. My family. My home.

I close my eyes and let the sound wash over me.

Then I open them, and they flash gold in the gathering dark.

Let them come.

We'll be ready.
