Chapter 111 **
Chapter 111 **
Maya
Lily is already waiting for us when we step out of the car. The entire block is emptied of ordinary people, and the skies above us are dark and eerie as if set for a battle.
Werewolves from the Winterbite pack surround us; countless of them bare their teeth and growl viciously. They all seem ready to slaughter us if their alpha, Lily, decides to snap her fingers.
Elijah glances around, baring his teeth to hiss at the wolves. Veins appear on his face, and Kyra widens her eyes at the sight of her vampire mate.
I'm guessing she has never seen Elijah's true colors; regardless, newfound respect shines in her eyes. It seems even she understands that the vampire isn't to be underestimated.
"I don't like this," Finn says as he takes in our surroundings. His wings spread out from his back, although the only reason for him to fight is if I lose against Lily.
"Me neither," Kyra agrees. "Why are they all staring at us?"
Lily chuckles. "Because they are all waiting for my command."
I jerk around and size her up. She is wearing our mother's cut leather jacket, and her eyes are entirely red. Black hair touches her collarbones, and her smile is cruel.
She looks like me, but with dark hair instead of white—there is no mistaking that we are twins.
"Lily." I greet her in a low tone.
She narrows her eyes, still wearing her smile. "Maya."
She circles me and then studies my friends with a thoughtful expression. I can't tell what she is thinking.
"I assume you're here to challenge me for the position of alpha, am I correct?"
"Yes," I'm following her every move. "Is Bianca safe?"
"She is alright," Lily laughs. "I wasn't sure how to grab your attention, so of course, I had to kidnap your best friend—it paid of in the end. Now I can slaughter you and become a real alpha."
I glare at her. "I wouldn't underestimate me if I were you."
"Oh?" She stops in her tracks. "Did someone finally find their inner wolf?"
I challenge her by smiling. "Would you like to find out, sister?"
Her lips curl, and then she faces her pack. "Stand back and don't interfere," her amused eyes land on mine. "A battle between alphas is about to begin."
I swallow thickly, then meet Elijah's eyes. He looks hesitant but gets the hint and walks away to the sidelines. Kyra follows him, while Finn stays with an apprehensive look on his face.
"Will you be alright?"
"I got this," I tell him, wishing we weren't fighting so I could hug him. He looks genuinely worried about me. "Trust me."
The fairy gives me a tight-lipped smile. "I won't forgive you if you die."
I snort a laugh, and just like that, his hardness cracks, and I know we will be fine when I see his smile.
Finn won't age as quickly as I. Still, as I stand there, watching his handsome face illuminated by the streetlight, I realize we have something most people never will find—true love.
In front of me, Lily sighs. "Can we get on with it already, sister? I'm waiting over here."
I look forward, noticing the street is ours. Every wolf has turned back into a human, and now they are watching us. I can't find my parents among the crowd—Lily, the lunatic, probably locked them up.
'I am so ready for this battle,' Lumi howls. 'Pumped up to one hundred percent!'
I smile. "So, we fight each other without interference, and whoever wins the duel gets to take over the pack?"
Lily nods. "Yes, and it's a fight to the death."
My breath hitches. "To the death?"
"That's what the prophecy says, sister—two twins will be born, one of darkness and the other of light. they will fight, and whoever comes out alive will be crowned as a new elder alpha."
"Elder alpha?"
"I'm sure your wolf speaks with you—mine speaks with me too, its because we are both elder wolves."
'She is right," Lumi interrupts. 'Your father comes from an ancient line of elder wolves, or lycan, as some likes to call them. But your father isn't as powerful since he is growing old. He is no longer in his prime, which means you and I are the ones having to defeat Lily.'
'I see,' a smile graces my lips. 'None of that matters to me—all I want is to free my pack from this crazy person.'
'Of course,' Lumi says. 'And we will.'
I focus on Lily, parting my lips. "My wolf does talk with me, and she says we are going to win this battle."
"Funny," Lily laughs. "Mine is confident we are the ones to win."
We both narrow our eyes, and then, in a flash, we both leap and take our werewolf forms.
Lily is a beautiful white wolf while I'm dark like the night. It seems our wolves are complete opposites to the powers lurking inside us.
'Here she comes.'
The air grows chillier, and even the skies become darker, blocking out the moonlight. I look around and notice shadow creepers are stepping up from the underground. They are all smiling evilly at me.
'Careful,' Lumi warns as I take a step back. 'We won't want to show her that we are afraid, even if fear is a good thing.'
'Why is it a good thing?' I ask, concerned about the monsters creeping closer with their disarranged faces.
'It means we aren't overly confident and that we aren't underestimated our enemy. Lily is strong, and this will be a hard battle.'
'Noted.'
I focus my attention on Lily, and my hackles rise. She is watching me with curious eyes, probably interested in my abilities.
'So why don't we show her?'
I smile, then howl, allowing my power to seep out through my pores and change the night to daytime. The clouds move away, letting sunlight stream down and chase the shadow creepers back into the underground.
My attention goes back to Lily, who stares up at the sun, and I smile—now the real battle can begin.
