She didn’t care whether the porridge was too hot; she just gulped it down without even chewing, swallowing it whole.
This porridge wasn’t the one Shi Che had cooled; although not as scalding as when freshly cooked, it was still hot enough to numb her tongue. Yet, she was oblivious, heavily placing the empty bowl back on the table. The crisp sound of ceramic hitting the surface shook Shi Che’s heart. He watched in a daze as Ling Chuxia finished the porridge, then coldly curled his lips and said word by word, "Now, I can take my medicine, right?"
After Ling Chuxia spoke, she didn’t pay any attention to Shi Che, and instead reached out to grab the pills he had placed back on the bedside table. Without looking at how to take them, she poured two pills into her palm and threw them into her mouth, swallowing them dry without water.
Having done all this, Ling Chuxia’s dark eyes stared straight at Shi Che, her lips still curled into an arc, but without a hint of a smile.
"I’ve eaten the porridge, and I’ve taken my medicine. My fever will soon subside. Then, please keep your promise and leave this place, disappear from before me!"
With those words, she lay back down on the bed, pulling the covers over herself, and then turned her back to Shi Che, leaving him only a view of her back.
The night had grown deep, and the room was so quiet that one could hardly hear breathing.
Shi Che sat on the side of the bed, his dark eyes somewhat blank as he stared at the back of Ling Chuxia who was facing away from him in her sleep. Those dark eyes, like fallen stars, were dim and devoid of any light.
His head began to throb faintly again; Shi Che’s brow furrowed tightly, and cold sweat gradually seeped out on his forehead. His hands touched his head, his fingers firmly pressing down on his temples, yet the pain only intensified.
Over the past month, his headaches had hardly flared up, but now, the pain struck fiercely, and he felt as if he couldn’t withstand it for a moment.
He took a deep breath and fiercely suppressed it; he couldn’t collapse yet. Chuxia’s fever hadn’t subsided, he needed to stay clear-headed to take care of her.
But the pain was so turbulent, more intense than every previous occurrence, brutally stimulating his brain and every single nerve. His breathing became unavoidably rushed, emitting a faint sound in the dark night.
Even in such a moment, Shi Che couldn’t help quickly glancing at Ling Chuxia, fearing he might wake her. Seeing her sleeping unaware, he slightly relaxed. But the pain was unbearable, and he eventually stood up, controlling his steps as quietly as possible and walked out of the room.
Silently and gently, he closed the door behind him, and only then did Shi Che allow the breath he had been holding back in his throat to escape.
As soon as the door closed, Ling Chuxia, who had been quietly sleeping, fluttered her long eyelashes and slowly opened her eyes.
Her body shifted slightly, turning to the other side, her gaze falling on the empty chair where Shi Che had been sitting. It was empty, nothing there.
He had finally left.
He had finally gone.
Ling Chuxia tugged at the corners of her lips, attempting to smile, but her lips just wouldn’t lift. In the end, her eyes gradually filled with self-mockery.
As the sky began to show the first signs of dawn, Ling Chuxia was already awake. In fact, since Shi Che had left the night before, she had hardly been able to sleep deeply, remaining in a light sleep.
