"Haoran, I sent him out of town to collect debts. His friend Luca thinks he’s at the castle, so there’s no suspicion at all."
"They don’t seem like they’ll be staying with us long," the old woman mused.
Zhuang Haoxiong curled his lips into a smile that pleased the elderly lady and said, "Grandma, you have a way to make them stay longer."
"Let me think about it." A sharp light flashed through the old woman’s blue eyes. "Don’t be fooled by their appearances, one seems quiet, the other lively and careless. But even the rash one has deep eyes, surely she has her own plans."
"Grandma, are you talking about the one with the last name Zhong? Did you know she is Zhang Xiying’s fiancée?"
"You mean she’s going to be the wife of the eldest Zhang?" The old woman’s eyebrows raised again.
"Yes," Zhuang Haoxiong replied.
The old lady seemed amused, leaning back on her chair at an angle, "This is going to be interesting."
Gu Nuan and Zhong Qiaohui returned to their room, just about to change their clothes.
A child came knocking at the door, a seven or eight-year-old boy with blonde hair and blue eyes, as good-looking as the old woman. He said to them, "We’re playing cards, would you like to join us?"
The invitation from the host seemed hard to refuse.
Playing cards after dinner was a family habit. Guests staying here were expected, as a matter of etiquette, to join in.
Having no choice, Gu Nuan and Zhong Qiaohui tidied up and followed the boy downstairs to the family’s second-floor bridge room.
Upon entering, they saw a billiard table and card tables inside.
Someone was leisurely holding a billiard cue, standing by the table, idly watching the balls slowly turn on the table.
Most of the people gathered around the card table.
The children, especially, stayed there without moving.
Winners received prizes.
The children could get their favorite toys, making them eager participants.
Gu Nuan and Zhong Qiaohui approached and saw that it was like a gambling table in a casino.
A person stood behind the card table as the dealer, arranging the cards from his hand like magic on the green felt table.
The participants began placing bets in their chosen areas.
This was the simplest game, played with the children, guessing high or low.
The dealer reveals a card, and the participants bet whether their card is higher or lower than the dealer’s.
The adults stood by, watching with folded arms.
The children chattered loudly, each voicing their own opinions and arguing incessantly.
The boy who brought Gu Nuan and Zhong Qiaohui, named Anthony, suddenly turned to the two guests and said, "You should play too. If you win, you can choose a gift from all the things displayed."
Gu Nuan glanced over at the pile of gift boxes under the nearby Christmas tree, resembling a small mountain. She wondered what was inside each of them. If they were children’s toys, competing with children seemed tedious.
So she placed a hand on young Anthony’s shoulder and whispered something in his ear.
Anthony blinked, seemingly surprised, and said, "You mean you want me to pick for you?"
"Yes."
"I’ll choose this card," Anthony pointed to the first card on the left.
Gu Nuan said, "Then we’ll bet high. If we win, the gift is yours."
Everyone else also picked their cards.
The dealer turned over the cards, revealing a ten.
Most of the children who had bet high lost. Those who bet low and flipped their cards to find they were higher than ten were left slapping their heads in regret. Since Anthony’s card was the last one, all eyes were on his card.
