Chapter 199: The Revelation
Chapter 199: The Revelation
Caspian’s POV
"No! I didn’t mean it like that!" Lexi shot to her feet, clearly panicking. "I didn’t mean to disrespect you or anything."
"Really?" I glared at her. "Either way, I don’t want to hear anything from you. So do me a favor and leave me alone."
"Okay..." she said, quieter now. "I will leave you alone. But just... listen to me one last time."
I clenched my jaw. She was persistent, and honestly, it was getting on my nerves. Still, I didn’t want to come off as completely cold. So fine—let her speak.
"You have ten minutes."
"Sure." Lexi sat back down. "That’s more than enough for me."
She closed her eyes and took a breath like she was trying to calm herself.
"I know you probably think I’m weird or... whatever. But just like Elijah, I was forced into this marriage, too. And he—he still loves you."
My fists curled under the table. I held them tight. I didn’t want to lose it in front of her. But really? If he loved me, he would’ve reached out. Anything. A message. A call. A sign.
"I’m not trying to disrespect you," she continued, her voice softer now. "But... he didn’t reach out because of his mother. Gloria. She threatened to take your life if he didn’t do what she said."
I stared at her, stone-faced. She was trying. I could see that. But this? It felt like more excuses.
"I know you’re angry," she added. "And yeah, you deserved to hear from him. But everything Elijah did was to protect you."
Seriously? That again?
Hadn’t I been through enough already? Harassed, humiliated, abandoned. What else was there to fear?
Lexi looked down. "You might not know this, but recently... You were being followed. Elijah’s guard was watching you. I hired him. At first, I told myself it was to keep an eye on my love rival, but... really, it was to make sure you were safe."
She paused, voice barely a whisper now. "There were times you were attacked. My men stepped in. You never saw it—but it happened."
She looked like she blamed herself for all of it. Like she thought she was the reason I had to live like that.
"That’s nothing new," I said coldly. "It’s not like I haven’t been attacked before. I endured it. I always have. But he’s the one who gave up on me first."
"It’s not that simple, Caspian," Lexi said quickly. "Don’t you remember the fire? You and Evander almost died!"
"What?" My heartbeat quickened. The fire? How did she know about it and how much? My mind scrambled to catch up.
Did that fire have anything to do with Gloria?
"Yes—Gloria started it. She almost killed both of you. If Colten hadn’t been there..." Lexi swallowed. "Evander would have died. And he—he got hurt trying to save you. While Colten..."
It was true. Evander had been badly hurt. And Colten, who was already sick, nearly gave his life to pull us out.
"So, what’s your point?" I demanded as I narrowed my eyes.
"I already have someone," Lexi said quietly, fidgeting with her fingers. "A boyfriend. He is... just a commoner, but I love him more than anything."
She hesitated, then added, "Elijah and I... we have a marriage contract. Just five years. After that, he goes his way, and I go mine."
She took a breath. "Until then, we are trying to make things right. The plan is to hand over the business to either Colten or Evander... most likely Evander."
That’s how Elijah and I found our way back to each other. And it was all because of Lexi—her effort to fix what never should have broken.
We met in secret, away from the eyes that once tore us apart. Lexi was always there too, but with her boyfriend. She kept her distance, but by then, we had all grown close. There were no secrets left between us.
For a while, we let ourselves breathe and smile with hope.
But while we clung to those fragile moments, Colten’s illness worsened. After the fire... he didn’t last long. And his death only deepened Gloria’s rage. What really poured salt into the wound was Elijah’s decision.
He gave everything he had to Evander—not out of duty, but out of love.
The five years were nearly over. We were planning to disappear together—to leave this world behind and build a new life. Somewhere, no one could find us.
But none of us saw it coming.
That our short-lived joy would twist into a scar we would carry forever.
A lifetime of regret.
A lifetime of pain.
I told Evander everything.
He stared at me, silently, unmovingly, just like the others.
"So... all of this..." he stammered. His mouth moved, but nothing came out. His eyes were red—maybe from fury, maybe from the tears he was forcing back.
"Yes, you heard right," I said softly. "It was all because of us that Elijah wanted you to have everything. But more than that... he always told me you were the one who deserved it. Out of everyone in the Kensington clan, only you." I paused. "That’s why he went to Europe with you."
"What?" Evander’s voice cracked. "What does that have to do with you? Wasn’t he just there to support me?"
"Of course he was," I replied quickly. "But if it weren’t for you... Elijah and I would have escaped a long time ago. He stayed because of you. Because of how Gloria treated you." I let the words settle, then added, "And somewhere in between all that... Lexi got pregnant. With her boyfriend’s child."
"Boyfriend’s child?" Claire muttered, blinking like she couldn’t believe what she just heard. She opened her mouth to say something, but Evander cut in—didn’t mean to, it just happened.
"So... you are saying Gloria might be the reason Elijah’s not here anymore?"
His voice was shaky, broken. "And Lexi... she died because of her, too?"
His whole body trembled. Like everything was finally crashing down on him—and it was too much.
