Chapter 190 - 156: Destroy 2

Chapter 190 - 156: Destroy 2

But no one believed Naomi Shaw would do such a thing, so they all kept quiet and continued to watch. ’Maybe it’s just someone who looks like her from behind,’ they thought. They watched as the nurse stood by Charles Donovan’s bedside for a moment before ruthlessly reaching out and unplugging his ventilator. She then stood by and watched as Charles Donovan struggled in agony for a long while before finally dying.

While Charles Donovan struggled in agony, the nurse simply watched, unmoved. Only after he finally died did she turn to leave. As she was walking out, she seemed to realize there was a camera overhead and deliberately glanced up. Her face, concealed by a surgical mask, was captured clearly by the camera.

But even with the large surgical mask, her eyes were enough for everyone to recognize her. In disbelief, all eyes turned back to Naomi Shaw, who was standing off to the side, frozen stiff. The moment the nurse had appeared on the screen, Naomi had lost all composure; a terrible premonition had consumed her. Now, seeing eyes identical to her own on the monitor, along with the same forehead and hairline, her mind went blank.

’How is this possible? How could there be someone in the world who looks exactly like me? I was asleep in the on-call room all last night. How could I have killed someone? And why would I kill Charles Donovan? I had no grudge against him.’

As everyone’s suspicious gazes fell upon her, she grew even more flustered and frantic. She waved her hands anxiously. "That wasn’t me! I was in the break room sleeping all night..."

Seeing her like this, no one knew what to say. They all knew her character, but the gruesome truth on the surveillance footage didn’t allow for sentiment. Finally, with a pained expression, Sean Donovan pushed through the crowd and walked toward her. She immediately grabbed his arm to explain. "Sean, it really wasn’t me! It really wasn’t!"

She thought that, given how well Sean Donovan knew her, he would surely speak up for her. But Sean simply pushed her hand away, his face filled with anguish. "Anna, I want to believe you, but how can I? The security footage proves everything!"

She never imagined Sean Donovan would say something like that. Stunned, she staggered back several steps, tears streaming down her face. ’So this was the man she once considered a gentle and refined soul! This was the man who had sworn he loved her! This was the man who had cared for her for three years, the man to whom she had almost entrusted her entire life!’

’She thought he would at least speak up for her.’

Sean Donovan stood there and said coolly, "I’m sorry, Anna. We should call the police and let them get to the bottom of this."

His bodyguard, who also served as his driver, immediately took out his phone and called the police. Her vision went dark, and she nearly fainted.

She lifted her head, wiped away her tears, and clenched her jaw, forcing herself to stay standing. With trembling hands, she pulled out her phone and dialed Julian Donovan’s number. Right now, he was the only one she could count on. She was sure he would believe that she hadn’t killed anyone.

"Julian..."

She had only managed to say his name before she was overcome with sobs.

Julian Donovan, on the other end of the line, was already on his way to the hospital. He had planned to take her out for breakfast and then drive her home to rest after her night shift. Hearing her crying so hysterically, he grew tense. He stepped on the gas as he asked gently, "Why are you crying like that? What happened?"

"They... they’re saying... saying..."

She whimpered, gasping for breath. "That I... that I killed Charles Donovan... sob..."

The last words gave way to a full-blown wail.

Julian Donovan’s heart jumped when he heard her words, and his hands slipped on the steering wheel.

’She killed Charles Donovan? How could someone as kind as her, a woman who practiced Buddhism, possibly kill someone? He immediately concluded that someone had to be framing her. And the only person with the means to do it was Sean Donovan.’

’Was Sean trying to destroy her just because he couldn’t have her? She was someone who found joy in helping others. Forget the fact that she was innocent—the mere accusation of murder would be enough to completely crush her.’

At the thought, he seethed with rage, but he suppressed it and forced his voice to remain low and comforting. "Don’t say anything. Don’t do anything. I’m almost at the hospital. Wait for me to get there before you do anything else!"

"Okay..."

She whimpered her assent. Her helpless, lost voice made Julian Donovan slam his foot on the accelerator and race toward the Donovan Group headquarters. As he sped along, he called his lawyer and told him to get to the Donovan Group as quickly as possible.

’If Sean Donovan really orchestrated this, then he was far too ruthless, even sacrificing Charles Donovan’s life in the process. Even though he himself detested Charles Donovan, Julian had never once considered killing him. How could Sean, the grandson Charles had always doted on, do such a thing?’

His deep voice, filled with a steadying power, soothed Naomi Shaw’s panic. It was like a solid wall she could safely lean against. Julian Donovan’s words finally managed to calm her terrified heart. Wiping the tears from her face, she remembered what he had told her—don’t say anything, don’t do anything. So she simply stood there, lips pressed tightly together in silence.

’She had always considered herself a gentle and kind person. Who on earth wanted to frame her, to see her dead? A conviction for intentional homicide was a death sentence. Even if Charles Donovan only had a few days left to live, deliberately unplugging his ventilator was still murder.’

Sean Donovan walked over and stopped in front of her. Seeing her standing there in silence, he spoke in a pained voice, "Anna, I’m truly disappointed in you. Even if you love Julian Donovan, how could you go after my grandfather for him? Does love make you this insane?"

Naomi Shaw looked up at Sean Donovan, stunned and furious. It would have been one thing if he hadn’t spoken up for her—she could understand that, given that the man who died was his grandfather. But why did he have to smear her name like this in front of so many people?

’Even if she did love Julian Donovan, and even if she detested Charles Donovan for how unfairly he treated Julian, she would never kill him. Was she the one who was crazy, or was Sean for even suggesting it?’

’Even now, she couldn’t believe it. It wasn’t some stranger, but the very man standing before her, who wanted her dead. No! He didn’t actually want her dead. He could get her thrown in prison, but he could also find a way to get her out. He just wanted to utterly ruin her reputation, and then, when she was scorned by the entire world, he would swoop in to "save" her with his love.’
