CEO Ex-Husband, Don't Bother Me

Chapter 189 - 156: Ruined

Chapter 189 - 156: Ruined

Julian Donovan raised a dark eyebrow. "The Donovan Group is about to be mine. I’m going to add a special clause to the bylaws: Naomi Shaw is forbidden from working the night shift! And no one is allowed to trade shifts with her!"

Because Charles Donovan had been unable to produce evidence that Julian Donovan had renounced his claim to the assets, the Donovan Group was, as expected, successfully acquired. All that remained was the official announcement.

Naomi Shaw laughed and chided him, "Stop with your mischievous ideas. I have to go!"

Only then did Julian Donovan reluctantly let her go.

When Naomi Shaw returned to her department, the young nurse on duty with her was surprised to see her. "Miss Anna, I just saw you walking toward the administration building a moment ago. How did you get back so quickly?"

Their building was the inpatient wing, which was some distance from the administration building. When the young nurse had seen her figure from outside, she had already reached the front of the administration building. How could she be back in the blink of an eye?

"The administration building?"

Naomi Shaw was puzzled. "I didn’t go to the administration building. I just came back from the main gate."

The young nurse was just as confused. "Huh? Maybe it was too dark and my eyes were playing tricks on me? But I’m sure I just saw you go into the administration building!"

Naomi Shaw smiled. "You’ve probably been up so late your eyes are playing tricks on you. It’s getting late. Let’s make our rounds one more time, and then you can get some sleep."

The young nurse nodded and didn’t press the issue, following her to make the rounds.

After completing their rounds, they returned to the station. The young nurse immediately made a beeline for the break room. "Miss Anna, I really can’t keep my eyes open. I’m going to get some sleep. Wake me up when you feel tired!"

"It’s fine. You go ahead and sleep."

Naomi Shaw smiled and gently pushed the young nurse into the break room. Then, she took a mug and made herself a cup of coffee to stay awake. Unexpectedly, the coffee had the opposite effect. After drinking it, she became so drowsy she couldn’t keep her eyes open. She slumped over right where she was and drifted into a heavy sleep.

The next day, Naomi Shaw was jolted awake by the screams of the young nurse she was on duty with. "Miss Anna! Miss Anna! Something terrible has happened...!"

The young nurse had woken up first. Seeing Naomi still asleep, she had decided to make the rounds by herself without waking her, but she never expected to find... Naomi Shaw forced her eyes open, rubbing her groggy, aching forehead as she asked the young nurse, "What’s wrong?"

Her face pale with terror, the young nurse pointed a trembling finger toward the patient rooms and stammered, "Ch-Charles Donovan... he... he..."

Before the young nurse could finish, tears of fright were already streaming down her face. A jolt of alarm shot through Naomi Shaw. She scrambled to her feet, pushed past the young nurse, and rushed into Charles Donovan’s room. There, she discovered that his ventilator had been unplugged by someone. Charles Donovan had been dead for some time.

Her legs went weak, and she crumpled to the floor. The young nurse, who had followed her in, stood there crying in terror. "What do we do? What do we do, Miss Anna?"

Hospital security was so strict, yet someone had managed to enter a patient’s room and unplug his ventilator, while the two of them on duty had slept soundly through the night. This had to be a medical accident.

Naomi Shaw struggled to compose herself, then instructed the young nurse, "The ICU has surveillance cameras. Hurry to the security office and have them pull up the footage! We’ll see who did this!"

The young nurse wiped away her tears and ran off to get the security footage. By now, the morning shift staff had begun to arrive. Learning of Charles Donovan’s death, they gathered around, murmuring to each other. Family members from other wards were there as well. Sean Donovan also rushed over when he heard the news. Seeing Naomi standing there with a deathly pale face, he hurried to her side. "Anna, what in the world happened?"

She sounded completely helpless. "I don’t know. Mr. Donovan’s ventilator was unplugged in the middle of the night, and... and he..."

She was too distraught to finish her sentence. As a nurse, especially one in the ICU, she was used to matters of life and death. But Charles Donovan hadn’t died of natural causes; this was intentional. And it had happened on her watch, which made her feel utterly devastated.

Sean Donovan moved to Charles Donovan’s bedside. The old man was no longer breathing. With a trembling hand, Sean pulled the sheet up over his face. Watching him, Naomi Shaw felt a fresh wave of grief. ’How could this happen?’ she thought. ’Why would anyone unplug his ventilator? This is murder!’

Before long, the young nurse returned with the technician in charge of surveillance. The technician pulled up the footage from Charles Donovan’s room from the previous night on a laptop for everyone to see. The recording showed that at approximately midnight, a figure in a white nurse’s uniform had entered the room. The moment this person appeared on screen, everyone gasped, their hands flying to their mouths. The figure... was a dead ringer for Naomi Shaw.
