Chapter 283 - 15: Security Defense

Chapter 283 - 15: Security Defense

Jing Li had survived and built a team in Central City. He hadn’t done it on connections alone; he had brains. ’Wearing that kind of Protective Clothing... and you’re calling him a Wuyi Academy student?’

’That’s fucking Protective Clothing only a corporate exec or a government director could wear!’

’The intel must be wrong.’

’There must be a high-level Resonator backing him.’

Now things had gotten complicated. Cold sweat trickled down his back as he frantically tried to figure out who was targeting him. ’Is it because of that shipment? Or did I fail to clean up some mess a big shot tasked me with?’

He didn’t even consider reconciliation. ’The guy came right to my doorstep to kill me, so why would he let me go? Don’t be ridiculous. It’s gone this far. Even if I were willing to back down, he’d never believe I would just let it be. This has to be a fight to the finish!’

’It’s either kill or be killed!’

These thoughts flashed through his mind in an instant. His expression turned savage, and he barked a vicious order, "Find a way to take him down!"

Hearing his command, the team’s elites formed up into squads. The front rank immediately raised their Defense Shields and drew Steel Hammers and Steel Rods from their sides. The men behind them produced Telescoping Pole Forks. They began to slowly close in on Chen Chuan from three directions.

Jing Li immediately turned to the Resonator beside him and said, "Find out his real identity for me!"

The Resonator knew he had screwed up earlier. He began his search without a word, but every time he thought he had a match, it turned out to be a dead end.

He knew the Resonator backing his opponent was interfering. ’It’s not a very technical trick,’ he thought, ’just flooding the system with tons of pre-prepared, similar-looking data to throw me off. But it’s damn effective right now. I’d need an inactive Consciousness Body to help me sort through this...’ Cursing under his breath, he had no choice but to continue the chase.

After waiting a moment, Jing Li grew impatient. He immediately used his Realm Token to contact someone else, quickly finding a Resonator he’d often worked with in the past.

Once connected, a red light flickered in his eyes. "See that guy up ahead? I want you to destroy his Realm Token and Implant!"

Seeing them surround him, Chen Chuan raised his Snow Monarch Blade slightly and walked toward them. As he moved, he entered a state of superposition with his Second Self. In an instant, everything around him seemed to slow down.

Even with the advantage, his Fighter’s instincts told him not to charge the front line. Instead, he bypassed the Shields in front and chose to strike from the flank.

Empowered by his extreme speed, two men were sliced open with a single flash of his blade. But as he brought his blade down for a third strike, CLANG! A man with a Shield at an angle managed to move it over in time, blocking the attack.

And it wasn’t just him. In that brief moment, all the remaining team members shed their previous sluggishness and were now able to keep up with Chen Chuan’s movements.

This was because when Chen Chuan vanished from their sight, their nerves were intensely stimulated, triggering their Implants to automatically inject their bodies with a special chemical. This caused a temporary, explosive boost in their physical abilities.

These special Military-produced chemicals and Implants were now practically standard-issue for every elite team. Otherwise, it would be a joke for a team forged with so much money to be wiped out in a single encounter with a Third Limit Fighter.

Jing Li’s vision suddenly blurred, and the movements of everyone on the field became a hazy smear. They were clearly moving beyond the limits of what his eyes could track.

A chill ran down his spine.

’This is a fucking Third Limit Fighter!’

All Third Limit Fighters were required to be registered with the Central City Public Security Department. Even their travel plans had to be reported. This was the rule both within the country and abroad because once a person like that was fully armed, their destructive power was simply too great. They could pose a threat to anyone in a high-ranking position.

He snarled at the Resonator next to him, "Haven’t you found his identity yet?"

"Just a little longer..."

The Resonator felt helpless. His opponent was cunning, making full use of his prior preparations. He wasn’t competing on skill, just stalling for time. Although the Resonator was slowly closing in, it looked like it would still take a while.

Just then, the voice of the other Resonator came through Jing Li’s earpiece: "He has no Implant. I can’t interfere with him."

"What about his Realm Token?"

"His Realm Token is only receiving on one channel. All other functions are turned off."

Jing Li cursed. After a moment’s thought, he decided it wasn’t safe outside and gestured for the Resonator to get back in the car with him.

Chen Chuan wasn’t particularly surprised to see these men match his speed in the blink of an eye. He’d encountered this situation before. If people could get their hands on this stuff in Yangzhi City, it would be even easier in Central City.

The only difference was that, compared to the people he’d faced before, the movements of these men were incredibly coordinated, and their teamwork was astonishingly seamless.

The moment the Shield blocked his blade, a Telescoping Pole Fork from behind was already stabbing at him. Another man with a Steel Rod raised a gun and aimed it at his head. Not a single one of them hesitated for even a second despite the gruesome fate of their comrades.

Chen Chuan also saw that it wasn’t just the squad in front of him; the two squads in the rear were also rapidly adjusting to encircle him.

’Clearly, this team emphasizes coordination, and their combat effectiveness is nothing to scoff at. But it’s not like there’s no way to deal with them. Since their firearms are no threat to me, the lack of a real ranged threat means I don’t have to rush in. I just need to keep kiting them, or wait for the drug’s effects to wear off.’

But he wasn’t about to just wait. He retreated a step. His arm remained still, but with a slight flick of his wrist, he angled his blade to the side, parrying the incoming Telescoping Pole Fork.

Although the man managed to halt the pole fork and even tried to disarm him, Chen Chuan flicked his other hand. Several pebbles shot out, striking a few of the men in the head. Even with their protective helmets, the immense force of the impact was like being struck by a sledgehammer.

Before they could regain their senses, a flash of his blade was already upon them. As his figure passed through their ranks, the previously whole men were reduced to a shower of severed limbs.

In the eyes of the unknown Resonator observing the battle, one moment it seemed they could stand against Chen Chuan, but in the blink of an eye, they were cut to pieces. The transition between life and death was so swift it created a powerful sense of cognitive dissonance. After a moment of stunned silence, he ignored the rest of the fight and quietly withdrew without a word.

Having dismembered one squad, Chen Chuan didn’t stop. He turned to face the remaining two. Now that he had a counter-strategy, the rest was just a matter of repeating his previous actions.

Sitting in the car, Jing Li watched as the elite team he had painstakingly built and invested a fortune in was effortlessly annihilated by Chen Chuan. He trembled all over, feeling more terror than rage.

Before the fight was even over, he urged the driver, "Go, go..."

Chen Chuan had already dealt with all threats on the field. His eyes swept over to see the vehicle starting to move. He instantly sprinted forward and kicked the rear bumper. The entire car immediately spun out.

He followed up, kicking the undercarriage in the middle. The entire vehicle was flipped into the air. After landing, it rolled over twice before coming to a stop upside down on the street.

Jing Li’s world spun. His entire body ached, and blood trickled down his forehead. Sensing the external trauma, his Implant promptly injected him with a stimulant, allowing him to remain functional.

In his upside-down view, he could see a pair of feet walking slowly toward him. He fumbled with his seatbelt, unbuckled it, and let himself fall. He then struggled to the other side of the car, felt for the door, opened it, and crawled out. As for the Resonator in the back seat, he couldn’t spare him a thought.

Once outside, before Chen Chuan could reach him, he started crawling away, shouting frantically, "Stay back! Stay back! I have a Level C defense agreement with the city’s Security Department! They’re on their way right now! If you kill me, they’ll arrest you!"

Wubei’s voice sounded in his ear: "Brother Chen, he’s right. I just tracked the signal he sent out. He has a Level C agreement with city security. Once he requests it, a city defense team is dispatched. No, they’ve already been dispatched. They’ll be here within ten minutes."

He swallowed. "Brother Chen, the city defense teams specialize in handling violent incidents in Central City. Their combat power is extremely high..."

Chen Chuan, however, was unmoved. He walked to the front of the car. Seeing Jing Li scramble up from the ground and try to run, he pulled out his Martial Halberd gun and fired several shots, hitting him in the back and head. Jing Li was clearly wearing Protective Clothing, as the bullets failed to penetrate. His head was protected by a hardened skull, and he was surprisingly unharmed.

His expression didn’t change. He threw a pebble. CRACK! Jing Li’s head snapped back as if struck by a heavy blow, and he fell to the ground again, twitching.

Chen Chuan walked up, grabbed Jing Li by the leg, dragged him back a few steps, then picked him up and slammed his entire body against the car.

BANG! The undercarriage of the car caved in, and Jing Li was embedded in the wreckage. A mixture of blood, organ fragments, and Implant tissue dribbled from the corner of his mouth. The red light flickering in his eyes went out.

Several kilometers away, a convoy of black armored vehicles was on the move. Just then, they received a notification from an inactive Consciousness Body:

"Level C security service client has been detected as deceased. Team, please determine subsequent course of action."

The security captain first scanned Chen Chuan’s identity through a nearby Boundary Point. This time, Wubei didn’t try to substitute it with a fake ID, so Chen Chuan’s updated information was immediately transmitted to the captain’s Realm Token.

First, they saw Chen Chuan’s status as a student at Wuyi Academy. Then they saw the permits he held: "Weapon Permit, Armor Certificate, Unlimited Defense Certificate..."

Last was his past record...

But as they scanned, a red warning popped up, indicating it involved Dashun Country state secrets and that he did not have the clearance to view them...

Seeing this, the security captain expertly deleted the information, blocked the communication channel, and issued the order to retreat.

Less than thirty seconds after Jing Li’s death, the security team turned around mid-route and withdrew without a moment’s hesitation.

After all, the Level C security agreement only covered the client’s life. Now that the person was dead, they were naturally no longer obligated to fulfill their duty.

And after the service was concluded, the company sent a message to the deceased Jing Li:

"If the client has any objections to the current service, we recommend you upgrade your security agreement or purchase one of the following packages... City Security Inc., providing you with the most secure defense service."
