Chapter 276 – A good old misunderstanding
Chapter 276 – A good old misunderstanding
Sophia and Maya had a lively conversation with Chiyo and Dannie that covered all sorts of relationship and romance topics. Be it getting engaged, married, or even having children, nothing was left untouched. The engaged couple was amazed by how open the other two were about all those topics, while Maya and Sophia were the tiniest bit envious of them having just gone ahead and sealed the deal by proposing to each other.
“What is a portal supposed to be?” The girls were still chatting when Chiyo repeated the word she had just heard while tilting her head in confusion.
“You remember that I’m slightly on the more talented side when it comes to magic, right?” Sophia looked back at her.
“Slightly, yes.” Maya rolled her eyes.
“I do, yes! I remember how you utterly humiliated Maya with no effort whatsoever, even though she was supposed to be the strongest magic user around."
“…” The white-haired cat didn’t appreciate her choice of words.
“Personally, I don’t really use magic actively, but you’re amazing!” The orange cat scratched her cheek before her voice turned playful. “I just prefer to run and jump around, and I love to stab things really fast!” She uses daggers when adventuring, after all.
"You'd better make sure to never make her angry.” The blonde looked at Dannie while saying so.
“Yup!” The dog-girl energetically nodded. “I don’t plan on getting stabbed!”
“Good~.”
“Anyway, I’m very into the whole magic business and came up with a few fun things to make life a whole lot easier.” Sophia turned her attention back to Chiyo. “What would you say if I were to tell you that we had breakfast in the capital this morning?”
"I'd say you're insane. Why?" Chiyo couldn't follow her.
“I’ve been called crazy a lot, so I guess one more doesn’t hurt.” She shrugged. “It’s totally the case, though. We’ve been in the capital multiple times this past week.”
"Don't forget the ocean we've been to as well," Maya added some extra detail.
“Right!”
“Now both of them aren’t making any sense!” Dannie was just as confused.
“Okay, let’s go on a walk~.” Sophia stood up and gestured for the couple to follow her. "It's a little involved and hard to explain without showing, but I can’t really do that in here. By the way, are your adventurer friends around, too? The two that Fenny and I met together with you back then.” She briefly remembered the lizard and panda-man from last year.
“Rashk and Masi?” Chiyo tilted her head. "They left for an escort quest two days ago, and I really couldn’t be bothered to join them for that.”
“Fair enough!” The blonde could follow her reasoning. “Alright, then it’s just the two of you!”

The girls left the tavern and then went to a more secluded area, so the tiger could show off without destroying the common sense of anyone else besides the couple.
“Try not to get too surprised, okay?” Maya had a feeling that she already knew what was going to happen, so she tried to prepare them for what was to come.
“I don’t even know what’s going on, so it might be too late for that.” Dannie scratched her cheek while tilting her head in confusion.
“Same!” Chiyo nodded a few times.
“Anyway, so this is a portal.” Sophia cut right to the chase and opened one of her pink and purple portals with a diameter of roughly 2 meters. Inside it, the tall walls of the capital could be seen in the distance.
“H-HUH?!” The couple had the exact same reaction.
“Let’s go!” Being the type who rather shows than tells, Sophia grabbed their hands and dragged the two through the portal to the little hill outside the capital, which she was slowly turning into a tourist spot while leaving them no time to protest or complain.
“Is… Is that actually the capital?” Dannie naturally had no idea what had just happened, but the massive city in front of them managed to distract her.

“There’s no way!” Chiyo got loud. “What just happened?!”
“My portals happened~.” The tiger smiled at her. “It’s a magic I came up with that lets me connect two places with each other, so one can instantly travel between them. Just like we did right now.”
“No way!”
“Magic is amazing!” The dog-girl’s eyes were sparkling.
“Is that really something magic can do?” Chiyo looked around and stared at the portal again before focusing on the capital in front of them. “I’ve traveled a lot while adventuring with Rashk and Masi, though admittedly, more often
, rather than far, but I still met a lot of people. I’ve never seen anyone using magic even similar to this! I also thought Maya was the strongest magic user before meeting you, soo…” She paused for a moment. "Did we actually live in such a remote place that we had no idea what magic’s actually capable of?”“No.” Maya vigorously shook her head. “Sophia’s an exception amongst exceptions on unprecedented levels. No normal person can use such fantastical magic or anything even remotely close to it.”
“That’s actually a little reassuring.” The red-haired cat-girl let out a small sigh. “I already thought living in such a remote place as we do got the better of us."
“I’ve never been to the capital!” Dannie suddenly clapped her hands. “Do we have time to visit it?” As she didn’t really understand what magic supposedly was or wasn’t capable of, she simply got excited after getting over the initial shock of suddenly being somewhere else.
“Of course~.” The blonde gave her a thumbs-up. “The other girls will probably be busy exploring, so they won’t miss Maya and me before the evening.”
“Awesome!”

The four took another portal because they didn’t feel like walking all the way to the capital, and arrived at Sophia's mansion. They weren’t alone there, either.
“Sophia, my dear! Welcome back!” Eve and Theo were there, too, and the cat-woman energetically greeted them. “Good to see you as well, Maya.” There was a lot less enthusiasm in the second part.
"Hello!" The cat-man was a little less obvious about it. The two already weren’t fazed by them randomly appearing anymore.
“Could you at least pretend to not blatantly favor her?!” Maya glared at her mother.
“What are you talking about?” Eve just smiled at her.
“…” She decided against saying more. After all, she knew that it was of no use.
“Hmm?” The cat-woman then noticed the other two. “Wait… Are those who I think they are? Chiyo? Dannie?”
“Ohh!” Theo nodded a few times. “The adventurer girl and the lovely bartender from our tavern!” It seemed like he had more experience with the latter. “That certainly is a surprise!”
“What are you doing here?” Eve looked confused over the sudden reunion.
“That’s an excellent question!” Chiyo scratched her cheek. “Sophia…”
“Ahh!” Maya’s parents clapped their hands. That was all they needed to hear for it to make sense. “That explains it.”
“You have quite the reputation, huh?” Dannie looked at the tiger.
“They love me, that’s all that matters~.” The blonde shrugged in return.
“Fair enough.”
“I’m still a little curious, though.” Eve faced the two newcomers. “Did you two also travel to the capital, and Sophia picked you up when she randomly walked down the streets?"
“Uhh, not really, no.” Chiyo wasn’t sure what to tell her. Mostly because she had no idea how to explain anything that happened in the past two hours.
“Sophia, the others, and I arrived in Raumont today and ran into them there.” Maya took over the explaining. “We then took a portal from there to give them a tour.”
“You girls arrived in Raumont already?!” Eve raised her voice. “Didn’t you just tell us a week or two ago that you’re headed there?”
“I’m quite fast~.” Sophia smirked at her.
“Ah, okay, that makes sense.” The cat-woman nodded a few times. She apparently had already completely stopped questioning the striped girl.
“It also means you can return home whenever you want.” Sophia smiled at Maya’s parents. “And, of course, return at any moment.”
“Wow!” Theo lightly clapped his hands. “I like the capital a whole lot, but I have gotten a little homesick every now and then. I also have yet to find a tavern that matches the homely mood of Dannie’s place.”
“Ehehe~.” The dog-girl liked that.
“Yes, I feel the same way.” Eve agreed with her husband. “Being able to go home whenever would be a blessing! Even more so if we can return at any time, as well. I like being here, after all.”
“Glad you like the idea!” Sophia was happy that they were pleased.
“How is that going to work, though?” The cat-man tilted his head. “I mean, you can’t just place a portal thingy of yours somewhere random and let people walk through it whenever, right? Right…?”
“The Kings asked me to put a portal there because the place is strategically important as it borders the monster country or something along those lines." The blonde scratched her cheek. "Details on where and how the portal will be placed will be discussed between him and your mayor there.” She paused for a second. “That’s a little inconvenient, though. Hmm, oh, do you still have a house there?”
“Of course!” Eve looked back at her. “I mean, we initially only wanted to spend a few months here. It turned into a year because of you two.”
“Perfect!” Sophia gave her a thumbs-up. “If you’re okay with it, I can place a portal in your house that connects with the mansion here. Only you two and us would be able to go through, so it’s perfectly safe.” She then paused for a second. “Ah, but as a condition, you also have to let Chiyo and Dannie use it from time to time.”
“That sounds like a lovely plan!” The cat-woman liked the idea. “Very convenient, as well!”
“Thank you very much!” Theo was just as happy about it.
“That’s amazing!” Chiyo also got excited.
“Oh, that way, we can actually easily attend your wedding, huh?” Dannie noticed the various benefits this would bring as she smiled at the white-haired cat-girl and her tiger.
“W-H-A-T?!” Hearing that, Theo and Eve got incredibly loud.
Afterward, Sophia and Maya spend the next 30 minutes clearing the misunderstanding over the fact that the dog-girl was speaking about their potential wedding that might happen in the castle once it was time. It mostly took that long because the two parents refused to believe it, as they wanted it to be true and, more importantly, to happen next week.
