Chapter 43. Bai Xiyi Was Beaten Until She Cried
“Alright, Bai Xiyi! Did I fail to raise you properly, or what?”
“I always said A-Chen was such a honest, well-behaved kid—handsome, young, wildly successful in his career, worth billions—so why were you nitpicking and finding fault with him every single day?”
“Turns out you were seeing someone else, huh?”
“Hah! The only reason A-Chen agreed to divorce you must be because of this, right?”
“Poor guy didn’t even badmouth you after the divorce, and here you are, still acting like he’s the one who wronged you?”
“Our family has standards! The divorce alone already made us the laughingstock of the neighbors and friends, and now you’re cheating on top of that?”
“I’ll beat you to death!”
Lin Meizhi, fuming, grabbed a clothes hanger from nearby and thwacked Bai Xiyi twice across the back.
Instantly, Bai Xiyi’s face twisted in pain, her brows furrowed as she whimpered.
“Mom, what are you doing?!”
She shot to her feet, her expression furious.
Lin Meizhi’s anger only burned hotter.
“Oh? ‘What am I doing?’”
“I’m teaching you a lesson!”
With that, she struck twice more—this time landing on Bai Xiyi’s backside, making her nearly yelp in pain.
Even though she held it in, Bai Xiyi still winced, instinctively stepping back.
Lin Meizhi raised the hanger again, but Bai Cheng quickly stepped in to stop her, while Mingyue hurriedly positioned herself between them.
“Auntie, calm down! Xiyi’s an adult now—there must be some misunderstanding here.”
“Why hit her? Let’s talk this through properly.”
Behind them, Bai Xiyi rubbed her sore backside, her face dark with anger, before pinching Mingyue’s waist hard.
“Mingyue, what nonsense are you spouting?!”
“Who said I was seeing someone else? Who said I had an affair?”
“I divorced Ye Chen because he lacked ambition and we kept fighting!”
“You’re supposed to be my best friend—how could you spread rumors like this?!”
Her heart ached with bitterness.
First, Mingyue dragged her here to humiliate herself, and now she was being accused of cheating?
What kind of trashy men were out there anyway?
None of them could even compare to Ye Chen!
Mingyue blinked in confusion.
“Wait… you didn’t meet some Prince Charming?”
“I—I thought you divorced because you found true love! Then why did your sister act all awkward and hesitant when I asked why you got divorced?”
“Wasn’t that the reason?”
Seeing her clueless expression, Bai Xiyi nearly coughed up blood in frustration.
“You—what kind of nonsense are you spouting?! Of course that’s not why I divorced him!”
“And as for why she couldn’t explain it? It’s because her current husband is my ex!”
“My ex-husband is Ye Chen! Her husband is also Ye Chen! The same person! Now do you get it?!”
Bai Xiyi growled through gritted teeth, looking utterly defeated.
Mingyue froze as if struck by lightning.
Her whole body stiffened, her mind reeling.
“Wait… what?”
“Your ex-husband… is your sister’s ridiculously handsome husband?”
“How—how does that even happen?!”
“I don’t understand at all!”
Bai Xiyi exhaled sharply, too exhausted to speak, and just slumped onto the sofa.
Mingyue stood there awkwardly, wanting to ask more but not daring to press further.
Finally, she turned to the older couple.
But they just waved her off. “Alright, dear, this is a family matter. Best not to get involved.”
“Go inside and grab some food. We need to have a proper talk with Xiyi.”
Mingyue was burning with curiosity but could only nod and head into the living room.
On her way, she closed the window behind her.
As she entered, the other guests snickered among themselves.
“Pfft—isn’t she Xiyan’s older sister’s friend? Hilarious that they live just floors apart.”
“Older sister and ex-husband, younger sister and brother-in-law… what a tangled mess.”
“Tch, that Mingyue must know something. Look at her face—she looks like she’s in a daze.”
“I’m just curious what she said that got Xiyi beaten.”
“Whatever it was, she’s definitely the world’s worst wingman.”
“…”
Nini and the other friends didn’t hold back, immediately labeling Mingyue as a terrible ally.
Mingyue glanced at Ye Chen and Bai Xiyan, chatting and laughing with guests, then back at Bai Xiyi being scolded outside.
The contrast was jarring.
“What in the world is going on here?” she muttered under her breath.
Nearby, Nini overheard and smirked.
“Oh? You wanna know what happened?”
Mingyue’s eyes lit up. “Yes! I’m dying to know—how did an ex-husband become a brother-in-law?”
“How does that even work? Something feels really off about this.”
Nini grinned and crooked a finger.
“Sure. Get me three of Jinxiu’s latest limited-edition spring handbags, and I’ll tell you.”
Mingyue blinked. “You know who I am?”
Nini crossed her arms. “Doesn’t matter. So? Deal or not?”
Her curiosity gnawing at her, Mingyue nodded instantly.
“Fine! Let’s go talk in that corner—don’t let anyone else hear!”
Nini’s lips twitched in amusement.
“Alright, corner it is.”
The two huddled in a secluded spot on the sofa, and Nini gave her the rundown of everything she knew.
By the end, the newly returned fashion designer was floored.
“So…”
“Xiyi divorced him because she thought her genius husband should’ve taken her to the top of the world with him?”
“But he wasn’t the type to overwork himself, so he just put in a few hours a day and built a billion-dollar empire from scratch in a couple of years?”
“And then they fought over whether he should work harder, kept arguing, and just… divorced?”
“That’s—that’s way too reckless!”
Nini smirked. “Right? And the real kicker is, three months after the divorce, Xiyi even went live-streaming from their old place.”
“Probably wanted to check on Ye Chen and give him a chance to reconcile.”
“But instead, he went and married her little sister.”
“And then—well, Xiyi completely lost it. Guess the shock was too much—she’s been acting kinda unhinged ever since.”
Mingyue’s jaw dropped.
Her eyes darted between Ye Chen—laughing, toasting, clearly happy with Bai Xiyan in his arms—and Bai Xiyi, head bowed as she endured her parents’ scolding.
She couldn’t help but whisper,
“My god… so that’s the truth?!”
