Chapter 42. This Woman’s Imagination Is Wild
“Maybe Xiyi’s been on her period lately, so she’s been in a bad mood—”
“Ah—come to think of it, you’re her sister and brother-in-law. It feels a little odd for me to apologize on her behalf.”
“Just keep it in mind. Xiyi isn’t usually like this.”
“Well, let me toast on her behalf. Wishing you a blessed new home, an auspicious move, flourishing fortunes, and happiness in your new life.”
Mingyue raised her champagne glass and drained it in one go.
Across from her, Ye Chen and Bai Xiyan exchanged a glance, their expressions equally baffled.
Then, the couple raised their own glasses and drank as well.
“Thank you,” Ye Chen said politely. “We’ll be neighbors from now on, so let’s look out for each other. If there’s anything, feel free to reach out.”
Mingyue smiled warmly and nodded. “Neighbors should understand each other. What problems could there be?”
She then tilted her head curiously. “By the way, Xiyan, do you know why Xiyi got divorced? I just returned to the country two weeks ago and have been busy with work. Today was the first time I saw her, and she mentioned she’s already divorced. I always thought her marriage was fine—I heard her husband was handsome, mature, stable, and treated her well. So why the sudden split? Did he cheat? Or was there another reason?”
The question left Bai Xiyan at a loss.
How was she supposed to answer? Tell her that her sister’s husband had become her own husband, and that her own husband was now her sister’s ex?
This—was complicated.
Bai Xiyan hesitated, her face twisting in discomfort.
Mingyue raised an eyebrow. “What? Is it too embarrassing to say?”
Bai Xiyan stayed silent.
This—really was awkward to explain.
Mingyue smacked her lips, feeling like she’d pieced it together.
“Wait—was Xiyi the one who cheated?”
“So her little sister is too ashamed to talk about it? And Xiyi herself keeps dodging the question?”
“That actually makes sense!”
“Maybe that’s why she didn’t even show up to her sister’s housewarming—afraid of being judged.”
“Just how amazing must the other man be for Xiyi to risk everything for him?”
“Hah! I’ll have to ask Xiyi about this when no one’s around.”
Convinced she’d uncovered the truth, Mingyue nodded sympathetically at Bai Xiyan.
“It’s fine, I think I get it now. No need to explain.”
“No wonder Xiyi seemed so down. It all makes sense.”
With that, she raised her glass toward Ye Chen and walked off to find Bai Xiyi.
The couple stood there, stunned.
“Honey, what exactly did she ‘get’?”
Ye Chen shook his head. “No idea. But I’m sure she guessed wrong—otherwise, she might’ve thrown her champagne in my face.”
Bai Xiyan’s eyes flashed with anger. “She’d dare! I’d tear her apart!”
Ye Chen chuckled and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “Come on, let’s go mingle.”
Bai Xiyan smiled and picked up her glass, following him.
“Congratulations! Wishing you prosperity!”
“May your halls be filled with blessings, and the sun shine upon your door!”
“Joy and harmony to your household!”
The guests, all refined professionals, offered nothing but kind words.
Ye Chen and Bai Xiyan accepted their well-wishes with constant smiles.
In a quiet corner, Bai Xiyi sat with a plate in hand, watching the cheerful scene with a heavy heart.
“Xiyi, why are you hiding here?”
Mingyue walked over with her champagne, grinning. “So what if you’re divorced? It’s not the end of the world.”
“A woman chasing true love—what’s wrong with that? If others don’t support you, I will!”
“So, what’s the guy like? Who is he? To make you throw everything away for him…”
Bai Xiyi blinked, confused.
But Lin Meizhi, standing nearby, instantly perked up.
A man? Divorce?
Oh no.
“Xiyi, you left your husband for someone else?”
Lin Meizhi’s face paled with shock and disappointment.
Bai Cheng froze, then hissed, “Keep your voice down! Don’t air our dirty laundry!”
He snatched the plate from Bai Xiyi’s hands and set it aside, grabbing her arm.
“Come with me. We’re talking about this—now.”
Bai Xiyi, still bewildered, was dragged to the balcony by her parents.
Mingyue covered her mouth in horror.
“Oh no! Her parents didn’t know? And they seemed to like their ex-son-in-law!”
“Did I just expose Xiyi’s affair? Is she about to get beaten?”
Her face turned pale.
“I can’t let this happen! I caused this mess—I have to fix it!”
“If Xiyi gets humiliated in front of everyone, she’ll hate me forever!”
Muttering to herself, she set down her glass and rushed after them.
“Uncle, Auntie—please, don’t be angry! Let me explain!”
Bai Cheng and Lin Meizhi turned sharply.
Bai Xiyi: ???
What the hell are you explaining?
Mingyue, misreading the situation again, gave Bai Xiyi a reassuring nod before facing her parents with determination.
“Uncle, Auntie, I know you’re upset, but getting mad won’t change anything.”
“Xiyi’s already divorced. And the man who won her heart must be even better than her ex!”
“Love is unpredictable—it strikes without warning. Don’t blame her. She must have thought this through.”
“Instead of dwelling on the past, it’s better to look forward.”
The older couple stared blankly.
Bai Xiyi looked horrified.
What. The. Hell. Are. You. Saying.
Mingyue, oblivious, turned back to Bai Xiyi with an encouraging smile.
“Xiyi, running away won’t solve anything. Since it’s already happened, face it bravely!”
“If you chose this man, if you want a new life—then take that step!”
“Right now, tell your parents: Who is he? What does he do? How is he better than your ex?”
“Prove to them you made the right choice!”
Like a motivational guru, Mingyue beamed at Bai Xiyi, her voice full of conviction.
But Bai Xiyi only looked more terrified.
Bai Cheng rubbed his chin, deep in thought.
Lin Meizhi was already rolling up her sleeves.
