Chapter 39. That’s How It Always Happens in TV Dramas
Ye Chen studied the rushing stream, then glanced at the nearby trees.
“I’ve got it!”
With a light hum, he floored the accelerator, executing a sharp U-turn that flooded the area with the G63’s high beams.
“Stay in the car, babe. I’ll bring them over.”
He hopped out, opened the trunk, and pulled out a tow strap. After securing one end to a tree, he took a few steps back, inhaled deeply, and leaped across the stream. He tied the other end to a tree on the opposite bank.
Giving it a firm tug to test its stability, he exhaled.
“Done!”
He strode toward the campsite and called out, “Alright, come on out!”
Seven or eight shivering women emerged from their tents. Under the bright headlights, every detail of their drenched figures was visible.
Ye Chen clicked his tongue, silently comparing them—including Bai Xiyi, who kept her head down—and concluded none matched his wife Bai Xiyan’s figure.
“Hold onto the tow strap and cross carefully. Stay upstream, grip it tight.”
Following his instructions, the women made it across without incident.
Ye Chen coiled the strap, then effortlessly jumped back.
“Get to your cars and change into dry clothes.”
Nini stepped forward first and bowed.
“Thank you, Ye Chen. We were terrified.”
One by one, the other socialites echoed her gratitude.
“Seriously, thank you!”
“If no one had come, we might’ve frozen to death.”
“So weird—our phones had signal but couldn’t make calls. Only WeChat worked.”
“If you ever need help, just ask. We owe you!”
Everyone thanked him—except Bai Xiyi, who lingered awkwardly in the back.
Ye Chen glanced at her. “Hurry up and change before you catch a cold.”
He turned toward his car, but Bai Xiyi suddenly gritted her teeth and called out, “Wait!”
When he turned, she forced out, “This time… thanks.”
Ye Chen waved dismissively. “No big deal. Saving one or ten people makes no difference.”
With that, he got into the car, leaving Bai Xiyi trembling with fury.
To her, his words carried no real sting—just sheer humiliation. He’d made it clear she was merely an afterthought.
Hmph!
She spun around and slammed into her Ferrari.
Thud!
Ye Chen shut his door too.
“Hubby, your clothes are soaked! What now? The spare set’s wet too,” Bai Xiyan fretted.
“No worries. We’ve got blankets, right? I’ll hang these by the AC vents and wrap up. Call your parents first—tell them your sister’s safe.”
Bai Xiyan nodded, but her call wouldn’t connect despite full signal.
“How weird!”
She switched to WeChat, and the video call went through instantly.
“Xiyan! Did you find your sister?” Her parents looked frantic.
“Relax, she’s safe in her car now.”
The couple finally exhaled in relief.
After hanging up, they slumped on the couch.
Lin Meizhi sighed. “See? In the end, A-Chen’s the reliable one. What was Xiyi thinking, divorcing him?!”
Bai Cheng lit a cigarette, shaking his head.
“She’s just being stubborn. Yesterday, I mentioned setting her up on a blind date. Know what she said? ‘Can he even compare to Ye Chen?’”
“My God! In all of Shanghai—no, the entire country—how many men Ye Chen’s age have his achievements?”
“Now she won’t consider anyone ‘inferior’ to him. What a mess!”
“Divorced him, and now she regrets it!”
“Ugh!”
Bai Cheng’s face twisted in frustration. Lin Meizhi sighed again.
“Who knew things would turn out like this? We can’t break up Xiyan and A-Chen now. But after being with someone like him, how can Xiyi ever settle for less?”
“At least you’re spared the gossip. Lately, I can’t even hold my head up outside!”
The more they talked, the gloomier they grew.
This is what she gets for ruining a good thing.
Let’s see her keep acting up now!
The mountain rain stopped as abruptly as it began.
Under a crystal-clear sky, the sunrise painted the horizon.
Wrapped in a blanket, Ye Chen and Bai Xiyan snapped a series of unique, unforgettable photos.
Meanwhile, Bai Xiyi cranked her car’s heat to max, watching the crimson dawn—and her ex-husband posing happily with her sister. Depression weighed heavy.
Once the sun rose, the group dispersed.
Ye Chen and Bai Xiyan returned to Zhongliang First Residence.
Bai Xiyi, feeling feverish, drove to her parents’—too sick to stay alone at Beiya Bay.
Home at last, she collapsed into bed, drifting in and out of sleep to the sound of her parents’ sighs.
“Look at this! Sick and still relying on us. Was it worth it?”
“Back when she was with A-Chen, she barely ever fell ill. Even if she did, he’d take perfect care of her—better than we ever could.”
“Why’d she have to throw it all away?”
“Oh, A-Chen mentioned they’re moving tomorrow. Invited us for a housewarming—said Xiyi should come too. ‘Even if we’re divorced, I’m her brother-in-law now. She should at least know where her sister lives.’”
“So thoughtful. But with her temper? No way she’ll go. Too awkward.”
“Let’s ask when she wakes up. Maybe she’ll have a change of heart? That’s how it always happens in TV dramas.”
“…”
