Chapter 38. Women Can Be Really Stupid at Critical Moments
“Holy shit! What heavy rain!”
“Wow! Sitting in a tent watching the rain is actually pretty romantic.”
“But will we still get to see the sunrise?”
“Uh—not sure if we’ll be able to now.”
“…”
At first, many of the campers found it charming.
But slowly, they began to realize something was wrong.
The storm had arrived completely out of nowhere, bringing with it howling winds.
Crack!
A tent’s frame snapped, and the structure quickly collapsed.
Some tents were even blown straight into the air!
“Honey, grab our stuff—let’s get to the car!”
The sudden downpour, combined with the gale, gave him a bad feeling.
Bai Xiyan nodded quickly. “Okay, I don’t have much—just my phone and power bank. We can leave the food and other things for now.”
Ye Chen took her hand and draped a disposable raincoat over her.
It might not help much, but even a little protection was better than nothing!
“Let’s go!”
With a low shout, he turned on his flashlight, gripped Bai Xiyan’s hand, and sprinted toward their parked car.
“Everyone, get out! The tents aren’t safe—head to your cars!”
“Come out now! Get in your vehicles!”
“Don’t hesitate! The wind’s going to rip these tents apart!”
“While the wind’s still manageable, move!”
“…”
Ye Chen’s shouts echoed through the night.
One by one, the group emerged from their tents and rushed to their cars.
Tap-tap-tap—
Raindrops drummed against the sunroof, sharp and rhythmic.
Once inside, Bai Xiyan pulled out a travel bag and retrieved dry clothes.
“Hubby, change quickly—don’t catch a cold.”
Ye Chen nodded.
Turning off the interior lights, the two changed in the dark.
“Let’s find a hotel to wait out the storm. We’ll figure things out once the rain stops.”
Ye Chen started the engine. Amid the torrential downpour, he flicked on the hazard lights and executed a sharp U-turn.
Then, he led the way, waiting for the other cars to follow.
Soon, all the vehicles were moving.
Through the rising mist and relentless rain, the convoy trailed behind Ye Chen’s G63, inching forward against the wind.
Before long, they arrived at a hotel.
Inside the lobby, chaos reigned.
Drenched and disheveled guests filled the space, their voices overlapping in agitation.
“Damn it! Where did this storm come from?”
“No kidding—the forecast didn’t say anything about this!”
“It was supposed to be light rain, not a damn monsoon!”
“Well, it’s almost 5 AM. No way this lasts another two hours. Once it stops and the sun’s up, we’ll head down the mountain.”
“Why leave? The air’s gonna be amazing after the rain.”
“Good point.”
Amid the noise, Ye Chen shook his head, his arm around Bai Xiyan.
“Too crowded. Let’s just wait in the car.”
They returned to the vehicle, watching the rain cascade down the windows.
Then, Bai Xiyan’s phone rang.
“Huh? Mom’s calling.”
Frowning, she answered.
“Hey, Mom—why are you up so early?”
On the other end, Lin Meizhi stared at the TV, frantic.
“Your dad and I always wake up around this time. Listen, I saw your post—you’re at She Mountain for the meteor shower, right? There’s a huge storm there! Are you and A-Chen okay?”
Beside her, Bai Cheng leaned in, pressing his ear closer to the phone.
Bai Xiyan replied, “We’re fine, Mom. The rain’s heavy, but we left the campsite. We’re at a hotel now, but it’s packed, so we’re waiting in the car.”
Lin Meizhi and Bai Cheng exhaled in relief—but their tension didn’t fully ease.
“I saw your sister’s post earlier—she’s at She Mountain too. Do you know where she is? We tried calling, but her phone’s off. Your dad’s worried sick!”
Bai Xiyan’s brow furrowed.
“Her phone’s off?”
“Yes! It just goes straight to voicemail! Your dad’s so anxious he’s getting a headache. No idea what that girl’s doing.”
“Don’t panic. Chen and I will look for her.”
Hanging up, Bai Xiyan’s expression darkened.
“Hubby, my sister’s phone isn’t working.”
Ye Chen didn’t move. “Try calling again. I’ll message her friends on WeChat to see if anyone can reach her.”
For the next two minutes, Bai Xiyan redialed while Ye Chen sent video calls to each of the girlfriends he’d added last time.
Finally, one picked up.
On the screen, a group of girls huddled in a tent, shivering. Their clothes were soaked, their faces pale.
The moment they saw Ye Chen, their eyes lit up with hope.
“Ye Chen! Oh my god, save us!”
“The rain’s insane—we’re too scared to go out!”
“There’s a ditch near our car, and it’s flooded. We can’t cross!”
“Waaah—help!”
These high-society socialites, usually so poised, now trembled like frightened birds, barely able to speak coherently.
Ye Chen’s voice was firm. “Send me your location. I’ll drive over.”
“Okay! Sending it now!”
He hung up, and seconds later, a pin dropped on his map.
“Buckle up. We’re going to check on them.”
Bai Xiyan nodded. “Be careful!”
Ye Chen ruffled her hair. “Don’t worry. I don’t take risks.”
Vroom—
The G63 roared to life, its headlights cutting through the rain as it sped toward the location.
Minutes later, Ye Chen spotted a familiar car—Bai Xiyi’s Ferrari.
Instead of getting out immediately, he rolled down the window and swept a high-powered flashlight beam across the area.
Soon, faint lights flickered in the darkness, accompanied by shouts.
“Over there!”
Ye Chen’s frown deepened.
He adjusted the beam, illuminating the space between his position and theirs.
Splash—
The sound of rushing water filled the air.
Between him and the group was a depression in the ground—now a fast-flowing stream, swollen from the storm.
