Chapter 291: When in Doubt...
Chapter 291: When in Doubt...
No matter how hard Axel swung his sword, the enemy didn’t seem threatened at all. Still, he didn’t stop. Keeping his attacks up will, at the same time, limit Envy’s options, therefore making the situation easier for him in general.
He didn’t want his enemy to have enough time to think of attacking!
"RAAGH!"
Like a berserker, Axel just attacked endlessly. Sometimes boosting the attack power by raising his Overdrive output, and sometimes running on low power to recover, keeping a state that’s perpetually active.
"You should know this is futile, right?"
The demon asked, seemingly bored of the one-tone attacks coming at him.
Each time Axel’s sword "should" reach him, his body would’ve moved a meter further, going completely outside of his range.
’Tampering with the cause and effect regarding his body or weapons aimed at him... is it?’
Still, each time Axel attacked, he was slowly figuring out what was the enemy’s ability. He was sure that it was something that tampers with the laws of cause and effect, as the demon himself confirmed as such.
But still, he couldn’t be sure "what" was truly affected by it.
Is it everything without limits, or simply things that were in close proximity? Axel was testing all those out one by one. And just now, he just finished verifying about melee attacks.
Any attacks that the enemy could see are easily neutralized. Thinking that hitting his blind spot could work, Axel even used "forced telekinesis" on another sword and stabbed from behind at supersonic speeds. However, even that was neutralized without fail.
In short, the condition is definitely not vision or sound.
"Hah! Only speak when you find a way to attack me first!" Axel growled, trying to distract the enemy.
However, his taunt was taken as a challenge instead.
"You think I couldn’t attack?" The jester chuckled. "Then you’re sorely mistaken. It’s not that I can’t attack, but rather, I didn’t!"
At that moment, Axel’s sword finally landed.
The blade hit Envy right in the middle of his head, crashing down until his body was bisected completely. Axel felt elation for a brief moment, thinking that he succeeded in his attack, when...
""If I do this, attacking you is easy!""
"What...?!"
Before Axel stood not two halves of Envy, but rather, two "complete" bodies of him.
Truly, Axel was sure he cut him. The texture of cutting through meat and bones couldn’t be faked. However, standing before him now were two of the same being! Their strength didn’t change either; it was still the same.
In short, with this simple trick, Envy’s power had effectively doubled instantly!
"Ugh!"
Axel quickly raised his sword, blocking something that shone in the corner of his eyes.
CLANG!
And a split-second later, something struck the face of the sword. Something metallic, and packed enough power to make him take two steps backward, staggered.
Without delay, he assessed the object that fell and gasped.
’A curved dagger? A cutlass knife?!’
He couldn’t be sure, but it was undoubtedly a metallic weapon. Something that the enemy before him obviously wasn’t carrying before! But now, both copies were holding two of the same dagger each, as if it were the most natural thing in the world!
""Surprised?"" Envy whispered in unison with his other self. ""I told you I can attack you whenever I want to.""
"Bullshit!"
Still, despite his right hand trembling and numb after blocking that hit, he didn’t back down. With a fierce expression, he started attacking the two copies of Envy, almost like a wild boar that lost itself in rage.
With finesse, Axel swung the sword.
However, no matter how hard he tried, it still couldn’t connect.
The same problem as before still applies—all hits were nullified by Envy moving a meter away instantaneously!
Worse, Axel’s turn to attack was lessening with every passing second.
Whenever he attacks Envy A, then Envy B attacks him. And when he attacks Envy B, A will move to attack! Axel was still barely able to attack and block at the same time, but even that was nearing its limits.
His stamina wasn’t infinite, after all.
"Haaa... Haaa...!"
His breathing was already ragged, his brain already screaming for oxygen.
The problem was that he couldn’t really stop attacking. If he did, then both copies would move to attack at the same time, and that would definitely be harder to block!
Each time he attacked, he could hear a soft chuckle escape from Envy’s lips. And each time he blocked, he could feel the amusement in the demon’s eyes gazing at him. Such things were slowly getting on Axel’s nerves.
"Pfft!"
And when a short laugh escaped one of the two copies’ lips, something snapped inside Axel’s head.
"...!"
Without pause, he threw the sword in his hand toward one of the two—the one behind him—before dashing forward with great intensity. Then, he drew a new weapon out of his inventory.
WHOOOOSH!
Something so big it was unbelievable!
No, it wasn’t even a weapon.
"GAH!"
But for the first time, a scream of pain escaped from Envy’s lips.
The new weapon—a pillar of roughly a meter radius and about 10 meters long—successfully landed a hit on his enemy!
"...!"
Axel was surprised himself. He wasn’t really expecting it to hit.
In his mind, this would just make Envy’s copy back off a great distance. But instead, this pillar made out of God’s Mineral actually landed a solid hit!
Still, the damage was insignificant.
Since it wasn’t really an attack but a diversion, Axel didn’t up his Overdrive at the moment of impact; thus, it only staggered the enemy, sending it flying across a few hundred meters before crashing into the ground.
"No way!"
The remaining copy, which dodged the sword he threw, stared wide-eyed at the pillar that Axel embraced. "You... Where did you get—!"
Before he could finish his words, however, Axel already slammed the pillar in reverse. Almost like a battering ram against the copy’s stomach. This time, it was a proper "attack" loaded with an instantaneous 1000% Overdrive output—basically Axel’s optimal attack power!
CRACK!
The copy’s body bent like the letter "C," the sound of cracking bones echoing, with the faint vibrations reaching Axel’s fingers.
A thin smile covered his lips as he watched the second copy fly away just like the first.
"I don’t know why, but fuck that works!"
