Chapter 119: Selfish bastard
Chapter 119: Selfish bastard
"Your master is currently busy, maybe even fighting for his life. You should worry about yourself."
Kaidos didn’t reply—not with words. A red light flashed from where he lay, and he suddenly erupted from the debris. He was now covered in blood armor and held a blazing sword.
He slammed into Temur, and the two of them went tumbling, crashing into the wall and carving out a massive crater. But they were back on their feet and clashing again in a flash.
I sighed. "It’s best we leave them to it. How do I get you down?!" I shouted up at Litha.
"I don’t know, this some kind of artifact. Maybe jump and try to throw it down like a ball or what."
I crouched and sent Hermit into agility. Then I leaped. I reached the orb and did exactly as she suggested. I slammed it downward, and to my surprise, it shot toward the ground, accompanied by Litha’s shout.
The orb smashed into the floor and shattered into pieces. A blue light burst out and condensed into a shape. Litha was grinning like a maniac, her blue eyes hard as diamonds. But when she took a step, she stumbled and almost fell. I was there immediately, holding her up by the shoulder.
"I guess there’s no washing in the orb because you stink!" I said with a laugh that turned into a cough when she glared at me.
I cleared a chair for her and helped her sit. When I finally took a good look at her, anger flared inside me.
She was lean now, her face hollow, with only her eyes shining brightly. "Wh..m..."
She touched her stomach and grunted with satisfaction. "At least I’m healed. The orb messes with my head, but I think it was providing me with some kind of nutrients, just to keep me alive."
"I’ll kill you!!"
The shout rang out suddenly. Kaidos saw that she was back and turned his back on Temur, charging toward Litha instead. His sword was broken and part of his armor cracked, but he was still an imposing figure.
But he shouldn’t have turned his back on the one he was fighting. Temur grabbed his head from behind and smashed it face-first into the ground with a bang. He seized his legs, slammed him back down, then leaped after him.
I turned back to Litha. "Well, I’m glad you are back now. Temur will flatten you in no time."
She nodded, then asked sharply, "Then where’s Kaelith? He’s not the type to put things to chance." She studied Temur and Kaidos, knowing he was a cunning fox.
"Oh, he’s getting held up by Thayer. He won’t interfere until we leave this place at least."
Just then, a scream echoed through the room. Kaidos cried out in pain and fear, but it was cut short by the sharp crack of bone.
I looked over and saw Temur staggering forward, dragging the lifeless body of the beast-man behind him. He hadn’t won unscathed. His face was a bloody mess, and he held his left hand gingerly. He dropped the corpse at Litha’s feet. "The one that stabbed you."
She smiled, her eyes flashing hotly. "I wish I could have been the one to kill him myself, but thank you, Temur. Come, let’s get out of here so I can properly scold you."

Kaelith walked into Thayer’s space, and Thayer accepted him with a smile. "I can’t believe I’ve met you. Are you a guest, Lord Ola?"
The eyes behind the mask smiled as well, and a smooth voice answered. "Yes, you can say that. I’ll only be spending a little time here, and then I’ll be gone."
"But why? Are you an active Climber?" Thayer asked.
He gestured and led him away from the crowd. Then he snapped his fingers, and mana hummed around them. "I’ve set a shield around us. Our words will be ours alone."
"It’s a good shield," Thayer admitted after confirming it wasn’t harmful.
"But not as impressive as the one you put outside. Let me answer your previous question.
"I’ll be a Climber again. You know, I’ve met your father once, from a distance, of course. He’s one of the most influential men in the Tower, after all. You have the same eyes. The eyes of a predator, selfish bastards who only do things that benefit them. But I see it more clearly in you. Thayer Argent, just what do you stand to gain from all this?"
Thayer smiled, his eyes shining. "I will gain favor from three Awakeners who will be one of the strongest here in this Tower."
Kaelith blinked. That wasn’t what he was expecting. I could tell he thought Thayer would say that the Necromancer and his team had joined his guild, or that he was doing this out of loyalty or some other nonsense. So this was the mindset of those who climbed the Tower’s power without relying on their own strength.
He hated it, hated that some were considered powerful just because they were among the richest. But the boy before him had both money and power. He was going to be dangerous. Should I just kill him? But his father, he’d turn the whole Tower against me, and not even the Cult would help.
Kaelith laughed. "So that’s how it is. You are investing in their potential. The same thing you want me to do, turn them into my sacrifices."
Thayer smiled. "Seems we are on the same page. We both have eyes to see those who shine, but your sight is still limited. If you could see farther, you wouldn’t be here at this party while leaving your hostage behind."
Kaelith accepted that. "It was foolish of me. I know you were helping them, but not to this extent. But don’t you think you have underestimated me?"
"How? You will be in this shield until I let you go, and they will be long gone by then."
