Chapter 786 786: The Cousins Meet Again, Finally.
Chapter 786 786: The Cousins Meet Again, Finally.
When the Quinns left the house, Leah was already in the kitchen making a snack for Ala, her movements lighter and more purposeful. Ala was also in a better mood, following Leah around the kitchen like a little kitten.
"What kind of magic did you just perform in there?" Hades asked as they walked toward the car. He had been half expecting to see Leah flying out of the house with Nimo and his wife to give Moon the second painful welcome to their fortress. "She went from a funeral mood to making sandwiches in ten minutes. Did you promise to take Moon for a trip to Shardling lake like you guys did with Amber?"
"I promised her a very miserable ending for Moon but not the Shardling lake trip." Sunshine said simply without revealing her true plan to him. "All you need to know is that it will be awesome. Fireworks. The watchers will love it. Let's just say Leah is happy because justice is a great appetite stimulant and energy boost."
Hades was disappointed, and he said so on the drive to the prison base. "I was kind of hoping for a trip to Shardling lake for her. Even a small one. You three are funny when you are being bullies."
Sunshine laughed and puffed at the same time. "We are not bullies Hades. We are the Avengers."
"Avengers of Shardling lake." He said, laughter bubbling in his chest. "Do you know how many of us are hoping to see Moon dangling above a lake with a potential crocodylus? It wouldn't be such a bad end for her."
She patted the back of his hair, staring at him with a mix of adoration and humor. "I am sure Carson, Poncho, Dwayne and Phillip are involved in this. Someone must be taking bets. I have my own bet. How much do you want to bet on Father Nicodemus showing up at the Steward house before noon today?"
Hades laughed, tapping the wheel of the car. "I don't even need to bet. He visited them yesterday, after the show down. Let's just say Dominic made him regret the forgiveness speech with a single punch."
Sunshine gasped. There was so much drama, and she had missed it all! "So not fair," she muttered.
As soon as they arrived at the prison, the doctors briefed her on Moon's condition. Apparently, she had refused them to touch her since she opened her eyes.
"I suggest that we sedate her," Warden Townsend said, "I am already uncomfortable because of all the stories that I have heard about that woman." He whispered, "Dominic called her the angel of death."
Sunshine and Hades laughed. It wasn't such a stretch considering how much death Moon had caused in every place she passed in this apocalypse.
Arwin rolled his eyes. "Relax Townsend, she is very human. She can't curse you to death or escape. There is no need for sedation."
No matter the assurances, the warden was skeptical.
Paula led Sunshine to the solitary ward. As she walked, Sunshine peeled off her illusion mask, letting her real face show. She wanted Moon to see her face, bright and healthy.
Dominic was waiting for them outside the cell. The metallic door was closed from the outside with an electronic lock. A Dominic shaped fist was its newest decoration right in the middle. "She's been a delight," he said sarcastically. "Demanding to see her 'beloved sister' every five minutes."
Sunshine scoffed. "Let's reunite, then."
Hades and Dominic stood close by as the heavy steel door hissed open. Sunshine stepped inside, standing expressionless in front of the reinforced glass of the cell.
Moon was huddled on a bed, but the moment she saw Sunshine, she scrambled to her feet. At first, her face twisted with pure, unadulterated rage.... seeing Sunshine looking healthy, wealthy, and powerful. It was a needle to her soul. But then, her face shifted.
She put on the most pathetic, tearful expression she could muster. "Suni! Oh, thank God!" Moon wailed, pressing her hands against the glass. "You won't believe what these monsters have done to me! The Stewards... they're crazy! They think I hurt their children, but I was a victim too! It was mother that did that, the apocalypse made her do crazy things!" She paused and looked at Sunshine, "Where have you been? But that does not matter now, you have to punish them, Suni. Kick them out of our base! No better still execute them!"
A chuckle escaped Sunshine when Moon used the word 'our' she looked at her. "You look horrible, dear cousin...you are going to have a bad scar from that burn."
Moon pinched her lips, then she let out a heavy sigh. "You have no idea what I have been through," She started blabbing a mile a minute, spinning a wild tale about being chased by lava, about being betrayed by everyone, about being tortured by mutants, about how she had suffered so much just trying to find her "dear sister."
"I can't really relate to your suffering," Sunshine interrupted, her voice like ice. "I've been very comfortable behind the walls of my fortress. It's quite a change from our past life, isn't it? Back when I was the one with the scars, suffering while you enjoyed a luxury life with Cassius."
The silence that followed was absolute.
Moon's mouth dropped open. Her heart began to hammer against her ribs so loudly she thought it might burst. She blinked once, twice, the gears in her head grinding to a halt. Then, the color drained from her face until she was as white as the cell walls.
"You..." Moon whispered, her voice trembling. "You remember? You were reborn too?"
Sunshine laughed in a sarcastic manner, "You stupid cunt. You are just realizing it! I knew you were reborn the moment your greedy ass latched onto Cassius. I cannot thank you enough for marrying that fool instead of Hades. That was the first move that switched our fates."
The realization hit Moon like a physical blow. Everything made sense now; the fortress, the advanced medicine, the food, some of the technology. It was all the stuff Cassius had invented in the previous life. Sunshine hadn't just been reborn; she had used her knowledge of the future to steal all the glory that should have been hers.
"The bracelet," Moon hissed, her fear turning into a desperate, petty anger. "You sold me a fake! How could you be so cruel?"
Sunshine sniggered, a dark, low sound. "Cruel!! You tore my room apart to steal it and rushed to leave the Quinn estate the moment you got it. Were you planning to share it with me? I don't think so. All I did was protect myself. I never forgot, Moon. How you killed me in my last life. I never forgot the feeling of that blade plunging into my body. Not for a single second.
The only reason why I didn't kill you right at beginning was because of the time crunch. I had to stock up and find a safe place to stay. But I told myself that if I ever saw you again, I would repay the favor. And I'm a woman of my word."
Moon's legs gave out. She fell to her knees, her hands rubbing together in a frantic, begging motion. "Suni, please! I'll leave! I'll go into the drift lands and never come back! I'll never bother you again. This is a new life. I have not harmed you in this life. Why can't you forgive me for something that happened in the past?"
