Chapter 216: Helping others
Chapter 216: Helping others
Yanai glanced at Zena, a faint crease forming between his brows. This female’s scent... it felt strangely familiar.
"Where do you live? We’ll take you back," Nina said.
"Just ahead." Zena pointed in a direction and started walking.
Her thoughts were in turmoil.
For the first time, she didn’t want to complete the mission. She didn’t want to harm this female, the only one who had ever truly helped her.
Even if that moment had been staged on her end, Nina’s kindness had been real.
But if she failed... she didn’t dare imagine the punishment waiting for her.
As they walked, Nina suddenly heard arguing from up ahead on the right. She quickened her pace and turned to look.
A female was struggling with a male.
"You promised me fifty black crystals! Why are there only ten?"
The tall, sallow-faced woman clutched tightly at the arm of a greasy-looking male.
"Because that’s all you’re worth," he sneered. "You should be grateful I gave you anything. Keep pestering me and you won’t even get the ten."
"Fifty means fifty. Not one less!" Mona refused to let go. "You will give them to me today, or I won’t release you."
She needed those crystals to buy medicine for Winny.
The male shoved her hard, sending her crashing to the ground. "With the likes of you, dreaming of fifty? Look at yourself."
As he tried to leave, Mona lunged forward and grabbed his leg again.
"You’re not going anywhere until you pay!"
At that moment, a frail boy of about six or seven ran out from a nearby house. His face was pale and sickly as he pounded his fists against the man’s leg.
"Don’t bully my mother!"
The greasy male’s eyes darkened. He raised his foot, about to kick them away brutally.
Before he could, vines lashed out. They wrapped around him instantly.
Nina pulled Mona and the child aside with another sweep of her power, then slammed the man hard onto the ground.
From their exchange, she already understood what had happened.
Her chest tightened. She hadn’t realized life for females in this city was this harsh.
In most places, females were cherished, protected.
But here... Without protection, even someone like her would once have been prey.
Nina stepped forward and pressed her foot down on the man’s chest.
"Give her the crystals."
The male looked up—and froze.
His eyes filled with lust at Nina’s beauty, ready to speak, but the moment he met the cold, deadly gazes of the males behind her, his courage shattered.
He scrambled to take out the crystals.
"All of them! Take them, just don’t kill me!"
These people were strong. Nobles, maybe. Even the female pinning him down felt terrifying.
Nina lifted her foot and walked over to Mona, handing her the crystals.
"Take them."
The man tried to get up, but Viann stepped forward and slammed him back down with a heavy stomp.
A muffled groan escaped him as his chest nearly caved in.
Mona accepted the crystals, her expression complicated.
"Thank you," she said quietly. "You should leave this place soon. It’s not safe here."
She hadn’t expected anyone to help her. Not in a place like this.
Still... judging from the strength of this female’s mates, that man probably wouldn’t dare retaliate.
Nina glanced back at the man. "What do you want to do with him?"
Mona hesitated. "He gave the crystals. Let him go."
She returned the extra ones, keeping only what she had been promised.
She didn’t dare take more. If she did, he would come back for revenge. And killing him would only bring more trouble.
Nina met Viann’s eyes.
He released the man—but not before kicking him hard once more.
"Get lost. If there’s a next time, I’ll kill you."
The man scrambled away without a word, fleeing in panic.
Nina hesitated for a moment, then asked softly, "Are you... alright?"
"I’m fine. I’m used to it," Mona replied with a strained smile.
She lowered her head, about to ask Winny to thank them, when the boy suddenly swayed and collapsed.
Her heart seized. "Winny! What’s wrong? Don’t scare me!"
She caught him in her arms, panic rising. "Wait here, I’ll go buy medicine right away."
Nina gently reached out and stopped her. "I have healing abilities. Would you let me take a look at him?"
Mona froze, disbelief flooding her face. "You... you really have healing abilities?"
It was incredibly rare for females to awaken abilities, let alone healing ones.
She hadn’t even realized the vines earlier had been summoned by Nina.
Nina nodded. "Would you like me to try?"
"Yes! Yes, of course!" Mona agreed immediately.
Healing abilities were far more effective than herbs, and she could never afford a witch doctor. All she could do was scrape together crystals for medicine.
Nina quickly began treating Winny.
A soft glow spread under her hands. Within moments, the boy’s pale face regained color, and his breathing steadied.
Then he slowly opened his eyes.
"Winny!" Mona’s voice trembled with joy. "How do you feel?"
The boy smiled faintly. "Mother, I feel much better. I’m not weak anymore... and it doesn’t hurt."
He held her hand tightly. "I’m better now. You don’t have to earn crystals for medicine anymore. I’ll go hunting and take care of you."
Tears welled in Mona’s eyes. "Silly child. You’re still so young. How can you support me?"
Winny puffed up his little arms. "I’m strong. I can hunt and earn crystals for you."
Mona hugged him tightly. "Alright... alright."
The scene moved everyone who witnessed it.
Nina felt a quiet ache in her chest.
How many females like Mona were there in this city?
Mona looked at her gratefully. "Thank you... my name is Mona. If you ever need anything, I’ll help however I can."
Even if she couldn’t do much, she would try.
"It’s nothing," Nina said with a small smile. "Don’t worry about it."
She turned to leave. "We’ll be going now."
Mona hurriedly took out the crystals. "Please, take these as payment."
Nina waved her hand. "No need. I don’t lack crystals. Keep them—buy something good for your child."
Then she left.
Mona watched her go, silently praying that the Beast God would protect her.
Zena’s heart grew even more conflicted. Could she really harm someone like this? Someone who would help others so selflessly?
At that moment, Setan happened to pass by.
Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of Nina.
He stopped.
His heart jolted.
Why was she here too?
As she walked away, he found himself following her without thinking.
Though Zena had said her home was nearby, they walked for quite some time before arriving.
She knocked on the door. A male opened it from inside.
"We’re here," Zena said. "Would you like to come in and rest?"
"No need. I just wanted to make sure you were safe," Nina replied.
She turned to leave, but Zena quickly called out, "Aren’t you waiting for your other mates? You can wait here. At least let me thank you properly."
Nina considered her offer for a moment.
"Alright. Thank you."
Waiting here worked just as well.
Zena’s eyes lit up slightly as she invited Nina inside.
