Chapter 264 264: Blood in the Water
Chapter 264 264: Blood in the Water
Violet unleashed a barrage of void bolts towards the nearest giant fish, each bolt leaving a tunnel of nothingness behind them as the void erased the water that stood in its path.
Whilst when she did so with her void spear the attack was hardly hindered, the same could not be said for her bolts. The water pressure coupled with the mana density of this area caused the bolts to have to expend their force at a much greater pace than Violet had ever seen before.
The result of this was that her bolts travelled at half the speed as normal and hardly managed to move 50 meters before the bolts used up all of their energy and faded away.
So to Violet's mild annoyance not a single one of her initial barrage managed to land on a target , the intended beasts simply using their incredible mobility whilst in the water to easily avoid the attacks.
Still a single hiccup was not enough to dissuade Violet, she simply grinned at discovering something new about her abilities and carried on with her fight.
One of the beasts rushed at her from beneath, its movements swift and silent. Only a vauge sense of danger alerted Violet to the incoming attack, her tail lashed out whilst her wings shot out in a powerful flap.
Her momentum was halted and her orientation was thrown into a spin, saddly her ability to manoeuvre in the water was no where near good enough to avoid a natural aquatic predator. The beast simply adjusted its trajectory and impacted with Violet's side, a gush of red bloomed out where the beast effortlessly tore through her hardened scales and tore a long gash down her side.
A cloud of bubbles burst from Violet's mouth involuntarily as her head shot around to lock onto the beast that dared harm her. A beam of void instantly shot out towards the now retreating fish, it tried to avoid the attack yet that was no easy feat when it was as close to Violet as it currently was.
The beam sliced straight through the enshrouding waters that attempted to protect the beast, slicing off one of its side fins and half of its tail. A shockwave of sound that felt almost physical impacted Violet as the giant fish let loose a pain filled exclamation that best resembled a sonic attack.
Still she did not allow that to distract her for more than a moment. Violet was already injured and that was after the very first exchange, she still had to deal with a good half dozen more opponents already charging straight towards her.
Spears of void formed around the dragon, they instantly shot off at anything that moved their speed and power enabling them to much more easily cut through any water resistance. Thus it only took moments for two more of the surrounding fishes to be struck by one of Violet's attacks.
One spear struck true, impelling the giant fish straight into its head, the beast stiffened upon the now 5 meter long spear piercing through its head, then when the spear exploded the body of the creature began to sink down into the depths, a cloud of blood rising in its wake.
The second impacted fish was on the lucky side, it only received a glancing blow. Still that glancing blow took out half of the beasts lower jaw, leaving that creature with a near useless mouth. Still that did not seem to defer the beast, if anything it caused it to go into a maddened rage as it charged straight towards Violet.
That beast was not alone in its charge, 2 more of the aquatic beasts charged forward. Powerful water currents forming a spear head in front of them, Violet felt quite some danger from them so opted to play it smart instead of risk being impaled against.
Violet blinked out of existence when the beasts were meer meters away, reappearing some 20 meters away and instantly unleashing a fresh wave of spears at her surprised foes.
Water solidified in the wake of her spears, the barrier reinforced by 2 of the beasts that had hung back somewhat from the initial charge. The barrier successfully blocked 3 of her spears, yet shattered on the fourth and was entirely ineffective for the fifth and sixth spear that followed right behind the first few.
One spear lanced right into the first beast she had injured, piercing through its spine and causing the beast to nearly split in two when the spear exploded. 'Two down, who's next.' Thought Violet as she eagerly gazed at her remaining prey.
In the other side of the battle Luna was also having quite some fun. She was experiencing a new aspect of her Arctic powers, whilst she had some experience mixing water with her ice thanks to fighting alongside Susan. It was an entirely different experience fighting underwater as they currently were.
When she stepped into the midst of the beasts that had veered off to face her she found that her pseudo domain had a strange effect.
Normally ice would spread out around her, slowing and potentially freezing any foe that got too close to her. Yet in the water the effect was something else entirely.
The water around her became more… solid, it acted as a natural impediment for the charging fishes to punch through. Not that they were unable to break through to reach her, just that as soon as the beasts got within 5 meters of her body they suddenly slowed down, as if they were trying to swim through honey instead of water.
That reduction in their speed was all Luna needed to rain hell down on her foes. Spears of ice formed around her in a continuous wave, meanwhile ice encased and extended from her claws and tail. Turning her body into a vicious weapon, one that she was all too happy to turn on those that got too close to her.
The first fish to get close to her was unable to react in time before Luna raked her claws across its face, 4 vicious tears appeared from its eye down past its jaw. Ice crystals already forming in the wounds adding more pain to the heavily wounded beast. Stil la single attack was not enough for Luna to kill the beast, thankfully she had plenty more to give.
Her tail lashed out cutting half of its tail off and preventing the beast from swiftly retreating, that provided enough time for Luna to reposition herself to bite down on the spine of the beast with her ice encased teeth, a reverberating snap echoed out as life left the beast.
The remaining giant fishes were more weary to approach Luna from there, when they did their water shells would be powered up drastically to punch through her now protective domain of ice cold water.
Still that would not deter Luna. She took another step appearing besides one beast that was hanging back somewhat, two frozen illusions appearing besides her in the same instant. All three versions of Luna struck out with vicious abandon. The fish did not stand a chance before it was cut down.
Luna then became a dervish, her illusions joining her on her hunt.
She would teleport from one foe to the next, only staying in place long enough to land one or two attacks before disappearing. She did not aim for a killing blow from the start, opting to build up stacks of her Chain Strike skill. Only when she was satisfied with the bonus damage did she then go in for the kill.
From there the battle field no longer resembled a fight, no, now this area of the ocean had turned into a hunting ground. Only not for the beasts that previously called this location home, no it was now the playground of the two beast that dared to intrude.
Void and ice lay their claim upon the water, the water tried to fight back yet was beaten back again and again as the two companions lay waste to those that dared to attack them.
It took less than 2 minutes for the fight to end from the moment that the first fish emerged from its den.
The previously deep blue ocean was now coloured red from the blood of the fallen, some coming from Violet and Luna yet other than the initial strike that Violet took the two only suffered minor wounds as they quickly learnt to deal with the fishes surprisingly simple attacks.
When all was said and done the two companions floated in the water gazing down at the slowly sinking corpses of their defeated foes.
"Do you think that they taste any good?" Asked Luna.
"Oh they do!" Replied Violet happily, she had made sure to try a quick bite as the fight went on.
Luna chuckled at that, well aware of her companions desire for all things good related. Still she hesitated, not eager for what would come next, sadly it was not to be.
"Soooo, how many did you kill?" Came to saccharin sweet voice of Violet through their bond.
Luna hesitated for some time, not wanting to share her kill count but knowing that it was unavoidable, so with some reluctance she eventually said a single number that would seal her fate. "Six."
No words came from her companion at her words, but the overwhelming feeling of smug satisfaction spoke louder and with more meaning than any words Violet could have said at that point in time.
