Chapter 250 250: The City Walls
Chapter 250 250: The City Walls
The dark tunnel was lit by intermittent flashes of light and rang with the clang of metal on flesh as the adventures desperately fought their way back towards the safety of the city.
The regular ambushes had by now changed into a consistent stream of enemy's for the expedition to fight off. Hundreds upon hundreds of foes had been slain by the beleaguered fighters, yet their numbers never seemed to end.
If their was a single good factor in this endurance battle it was that the experience gained from this constant battle was quite something! Violet and Luna had both reached level 99 bringing them only a single step away from reaching level 100, sadly it seemed that crossing that small gap to the middle stages required quite a lot of experience. Thankfully however, this battle promised to provide.
Hours slowly passed, the night steadily advancing into morning as they advanced ever closer to their destination. Each step they took resulting in yet another apostal slain.
The only thing that truly allowed them to so easily advance was that the apostals attacking them currently were in the weaker side, most of them only just in tier 4. That allowed even the tired adventures to be able to slaughter all that approached them.
Yet Violet was beginning to get worried. Her instincts prickled the longer the battle went on for, she tried to figure out what was causing this yet each time she came up empty.
The only thing that even closely resembled this was the time when they were walking to the dungeon the first time and they were ambushed. Yet she initially dismissed that as a possibility given the fact that they are constantly being attacked.
However, Violet had learnt to trust her instincts, particularly when they were being as persistent as they currently are. She naturally shared her misgivings with both her friends and the other leaders, yet what could they do in a situation such as this?
Whilst Masin believed her instincts knowing her nature as a dragon, the others were slightly less inclined to believe everything that she said, they may like her but they were also in no state to be able to actually come up with any kind of plan to figure out what a nebulous threat may be coming for them when they were already been pushed so hard.
So they simply kept pushing forwards.
Until eventually they turned a corner and were able to behold the city walls in the distance.
The grand cavern that the city was situated in illuminated in the golden and blue lights shining down from the distant ceiling like stars in the sky.
Yet what they hoped would be their salvation only turned into horror as they beheld the situation outside of the city gates.
Off to one side reality had seemingly shattered, dozens of spatial rips lingered in the air, from which hundreds upon hundreds of creatures emerged only to run heedlessly towards the city walls.
The towering city walls were lit up with innumerable runes that radiated powerful mana. Atop the walls thousands of defenders loosed barrages of arrows and spells down upon the swarm of foes that ceaselessly charged towards the gleaming golden gates that remained steadfastly locked.
Just from a quick glance Violet was able to see thousands of dead creatures littering the flat ground before the walls, small hills of corpses providing some barriers from the ceaseless barrage of attacks raining down on them from the ardent defenders above.
Yet even this terrifying scene was not what truly captured both Violet and the other adventures gaze, no that would be two things in particular.
First was the fact that standing besides the giant spatial portals dozens upon dozens of Incarnations of space stood, like the captains of the army they directed the fodder in their suicidal charge towards the walls.
Secondly and most horrifyingly, was that within the largest spatial tear, through which not a single apostal emerged floated a singular giant eye. An eye that was of so familiar to Violet as she gazed into its swirling depths.
Like a constellation its orange and blue depths swirled and twinkled in hypnotising patterns. Violet felt her consciousness began to fray just from staring into that ethereal eye. She only managed to tear her gaze away thanks to a surge of mental strength that she instantly attributed to the treasure that she ate as a reward from finishing the second floor.
A grim smile spread across her face as she gazed upon this scene of horror.
Saddly the adventures were not granted time to asses the situation properly, as even now that they had arrived at the expected safety of the city, they found themselves assaulted from all direction by the renewed onslaught from the attacking apostles.
"What do we do?" Cried on of the adventures, desperation tick in their voice as they desperately hacked away at a charging apostle.
Odrin frantically looked about in search for a direction to take, they had arrived from the north, with the city directly south of their position. The array of soatial portals spewing out attacking creatures resided to their right, that left only the east as a clear path.
The city walls did not fully encompass the massive cavern, quite some distance separated the walls of the city from the walls of the cavern. That gave the adventures some space to manoeuvre, and left them the only remaining place for them to go.
"To the east! We will circle around and pray to the gods that we can find safety there!" Odrin soon shouted over the clamour of battle. His call was swiftly taken up by the battered fighters, their haphazrd advance changing direction in the desperate hope to avoid the attention of the attacking army.
Sadly their arrival had already been noticed by the presiding incarnations. Violet felt a burning gaze lock into her, she turned her head to see who it was only to lock eyes with a familiar creature.
It was an incarnation, yet it was one that she knew all too well. After all it still sported the vicious wounds left behind from their last encounter.
A wicked grin split the creatures face down the middle, endless malice gleaning in its eyes. It raised a hand a tore open a fresh portal in space, this one appearing less than 50 meters from the assembled adventures.
From within its swirling depths emerged a fresh wave of apostals, this time charging straight at them.
Violet's eyes opened wide in alarm as she saw this fresh wave charging directly towards them, she opened her mouth and bellowed the only thing she could. "Run!"
